Little Nightmares 2 Review

Well, This is my first game of 2021 that I'll be making a review for. So let's get straight into it.

Little nightmares is a very interesting series where you're playing as little people trying to survive these giant monster people. o.o I don't actually know what the hell the story in these games are about at all and I don't think anybody actually knows what the hell is really going on since the characters don't actually speak. it's one of those stories where you just theorize what's going on and stick with whatever your head tells you makes the most sense..

So in this game you play as a boy named Mono who starts the game getting shot out of a tv in a dark forest. You'll eventually meet a girl named Six who is, yes, the protagonist of the first game. They end up working together exploring Pale City trying to survive weird monsters.

There are 5 chapters in this game, A forest area with some hunter with a shotgun. A school with a creepy teacher that can extend her neck very far. A hospital with these prosthetic mannequin things that freeze in place when they see light, …

A hospital with these prosthetic mannequin things that freeze in place when they see light, plus some weird doctor guy that hangs on the ceiling. Pale city itself with a lot of people with deformed faces obsessed with TVs plus the thin man, the main antagonist of the game. and the final chapter which I guess is in the the radio tower or something, idk. o.o

So I liked this game a lot more than the first one honestly, I just didn't feel the first game that much (story was still great). I just didn't care about the areas as much. I might try the first one again and see if my opinion might change. But this one, as I said, we play as Mono and he is joined by Six, unlike the first one, we have a partner which kind of made me more immersed in what was going on and it just felt more fun exploring the world with an ally. The Ost is really good! I loved it, especially the main theme of course. In this game, you can collect hats and find these apparition shadowy figures called glitches. If you find all 18 of them, you will get the secret ending. So there's a reason to search the stages again if you missed anything, if you're interested in collectables. The gameplay was a lot of fun but at the same time it felt clunky or something for me, idk.. Sometimes I'd be trying to run away from things chasing me, holding the run button but my character would just be walking at normal speed. Or if I tried to move at some parts, my character would be just twitching on the spot. o.o And when I picked up the blunt weapons, it'd be kind of difficult to put the weapon or item down. At one point I couldn't even drop the blunt weapon I had picked up on chapter 3 so I had to restart my checkpoint and then it worked fine. I also glitched myself and got stuck in a bathtub, I couldn't jump back out. I got stuck behind a door on the final chapter for a good while until I just decided to reload my checkpoint. I also kept fazing through invisible walls. o.o So yeah, there's a good amount of bugs in the game, nothing game breaking like I experienced with Assassin's Creed Valhalla or Watch Dogs Legion. Now the price of this game is 30 dollars, and apparently howlongtobeat has it at about 5 and a half hours to beat. I personally think that's too much money for that few hours of entertainment and would wait for a sale but that's just me lol.

So my final Thoughts on this game: It's a bit buggy but nothing too bad. It was a very fun experience playing this game and I do look forward to seeing what they'll do for any future DLC or a little nightmares 3. The price is a little too much for my personal taste that you can beat within a day, But again the experience was fun and I'd personally give it a 8/10.

Bullet Point Review

PROS

  • Creepy art style and enemy designs
  • Evocative mise-en-scène
  • Tense set pieces sell the hostile tone of the game world

CONS

  • Clunky controls and fixed camera angles consistently frustrate
  • Laborious movement makes the platforming sequences less than thrilling
  • Simplistic mechanics and easy puzzles are never particularly satisfying

A masterpiece in story telling and puzzle-focused horror gameplay.
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

I honestly find Little Nightmares 2 a huge achievement for an indie game. The game improves over every single aspect done by the previous game, and takes even more steps forward, while having a story told in a genius way. It's a must play for anyone who likes such kind of games.

Story is great, and they way it's told is a masterpiece. Without a single dialogue or conversation, the game converts everything it wanted to and leaves you to interpret the rest of events on your own, encouraging you to put pieces together to understand the big picture, and to even search internet and read theories about the ending and the general concept. It's a fantastic way to tell a story through gameplay without shoving everything in your face. Instead, it wants you think, explore and search for yourself.

The gameplay is still like the previous, puzzle focused platformer set in a horror setting. This game has a fantastic atmosphere. A lot of sections will send a chill down your spine or leave you tense of being caught. This game knows how to become tense without depending on cheap jump scares or anything like that. The gameplay is still like the previous, puzzle focused platformer set in a horror setting. This game has a fantastic atmosphere. A lot of sections will send a chill down your spine or leave you tense of being caught. This game knows how to become tense without depending on cheap jump scares or anything like that. It succeeds in this just by using the atmosphere.

The puzzles are great, and the game leaves you a big room to explore the solutions without many, or even any hints at all. Some puzzles are easy to understand from the first time, while some others will force you stop and think a little bit about your surroundings and what to do. Nothing is crazy difficult, but you'll just have to depend on yourself and not on the game itself telling you what to do, like many games nowadays.

If there's one flaw in the game I'll like to mention, it's the controls with Keyboard. The game mostly has smooth controls, but unfortunately there're some sections in which you'll be forced to either fight enemies or direct your weapon at them to keep them away, and in these sections the controls suck. It's pretty hard to direct yourself towards the enemy to hit him and I missed a lot of time which causes an instant death. This makes these sections much harder than what it should have been. Don't know if these segments run better with controller (the developers do suggest using controller), but improving controls on keyboard in such segments would have been welcome. Fortunately, these segments aren't that many and not that long for the majority of time.

The game has an average length of 6-7 hours if you focus on the story and didn't explore much, exploring and trying to find the secrets might give you an extra 1 or 2 hours. I think this is a perfect length for such game, and anything more might have ended up with it dragging. Some might think that it's not worthy the 30 dollars price tag and while I do agree it's a little bit over priced, I will suggest to get it on literally any sale. The quality you're getting is top notch, there's no doubt about that. I got it for 24 dollars on Steam summer sale and it was fully worth it, and I expect it to drop to 20 dollars or even less comes October/November.

The art style is similar to previous game. This isn't super duper realistic graphic, but the art direction is great to look at and how the enemies and environments are designed is fantastic and scary. While I don't think I heard many soundtracks playing but those whom I listened to were very good, and sound design in general makes the atmosphere of the places you're going to through become even more tense, with things crashing or falling down as you go through. These will give you a chill down your spine from time to time.

Overall Little Nightmares II is a masterpiece, from its great story and its genius storytelling, to its puzzles and tense atmosphere of the scary hide and seek game the protagonist plays with the monsters. It suffers a little bit from some bad keyboard controls in few sections, but these are just a small nuisance that doesn't last long, and the rest are a quality 6-7 hours experience that there's no way you won't enjoy if you like these kind of games. Do yourself a favor and check this on the nearest possible sale.

Story : 9.5/10.

Gameplay : 9/10.

Graphics : 9/10.

Sounds : 8.5/10.

Overall : 9.5/10.

Mostly good, but I prefer the first

Little nightmares 2 is much of the same as 1, a highly stylized and polished 2.5d horror puzzle adventure, but I honestly think I prefer the first.

It’s overall a much darker game than the first, with a prominent muted blue and black color scheme. It has some good areas, the school and hospital are very solid and very reminiscent of 1. The city was decent as well, but a bit more lifeless. The ending area was very underwhelming, just repeating the classic lost forest music puzzle and then it’s done.

The first one had a much more creative variety of enemies and environments, color palettes and imagery. This one is more consistent but also a bit mind numbing. Some of the motifs - especially clothes or TVs - are pretty bland and boring. The exploration also felt worse imo.

Still, it has the signature one of a kind style that I love. Hoping the next one picks up where the original left off and pushes the limits of its own aesthetic, presenting more wild psychedelic nightmares that only the devs could have thought of (even though it’s a new team now, so we will see).

Another Atmospherically Twisted Tale

4.5⭐ overall

I played the first Little Nightmares game not to long ago. I fell in love with the game and the atmosphere and tense nature of the whole thing. The environmental storytelling is top notch and I struggle to thing if a game that does it better.

The sequel comes back and does it again. This time you traverse The Pale City and while it's not quite as interesting as The Maw, you still can't deny it's ingenuity being portrayed.

What a twisted world this is. And I love every second. The inventiveness of each scene is well played out. And even in moments where you know your safe, you will find yourself gripping the controller a little harder than normal because you just don't trust that it's safe.

Brief negatives: my first time through the game (yes I'm going through again to collect all the achievements on Stadia) there were parts in the beginning where I felt like I was doing something wrong. The difficulty if the enemies was hard to figure out how to swing at them. But this might just be an user error. And there was one puzzle that wasn't a puzzle but I didn't …

I had to look it up to figure it out and it pulled me outta the game and the atmosphere and I was a little perturbed by it.

Overall those were minor inconveniences though. This game is brilliant. And while some will be infuriated by the ending, remember, reading other talk about their theories and coming up with your own can be part of the fun.

Sit back, or probably forward in the case of this game and enjoy the ride. It's well worth your time.

Much Improved
This review is for the Nintendo Switch version

Virtually all my complaints from the first game were resolved in this one. It controlled better, had better load times—those were pretty much the big things!

While it was a much better experience, I admit I found myself missing the setting of the first game, and the ending was a lot less satisfying.

But overall a better game, and one I recommend.

Good Atmosphere, Frustrating Gameplay
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

The art direction, character designs, and atmosphere of Little Nightmares II are its greatest strengths. The gameplay starts decent enough with platforming, stealth, and puzzle-solving but grows frustrating due to the player knowing what they need to do but the controls or field of view prevent success. Many segments involved dying over and over again before progress could be made. Thankfully the checkpoints were (mostly) forgiving.

The biggest grief I have is the plot. It felt too similar to its predecessor. I was disappointed but I usually am with horror game storytelling. I still plan on trying Little Nightmares III but definitely not a preorder for me.

I recommend this game to those who enjoyed Inside or Limbo.

Great Storytelling, with some minor dislikes

The storytelling for both Little Nightmares games are fantastic. I am always blown away by how much they can say without any of the characters uttering one word. It visually fantastic which helps to immerse you in the world and feel the story even more.

My only problem with this game is that there are parts of the game that can feel clumsy and you have to repeat sections several times to understand what you are supposed to do. This repetition of die, try again, die, try again, pulls me out of the story and then adds some frustration that I'm no longer immersed in the world. That is the only reason I didn't give this game a 4 star.

The Controls are the Biggest Nightmare
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Start with the Limbo / Inside style of gameplay. Add stealth sections and a bit of 3D depth to the levels (where you can also walk along a z-axis). That'll give you LIttle Nightmares, the sequel-prequel to this game. Then add a companion character and some actiony "chase" sequences, and now you have LIttle Nightmares II.

Much like the original Little Nightmares, the sound, graphics, and animation are unsettlingly amazing. Unfortunately, the ridiculously clunky controls constantly bring the game down hard; and make completing many of the action sequences feel more like luck than anything.

In addition to the super-sloppy controls, I also ran into a few bugs like my companion disappearing when I needed them to do something, and the "grab" or "run" buttons not working reliably when I needed them. I also had to restart checkpoints a couple times because I got stuck in the level geometry.

Also, much like in the first game, the added z-axis movement along with the heavily bokeh'ed visual style caused a lot of surprise insta-deaths, because it's difficult to judge where your character is standing/running/jumping in relation to the environment.

Honestly I would've loved this game if the faults weren't just …

What a Nightmare

Little Nightmare 2 is quite a twisted tale. The experience is much better playing with headphones because atmosphere and sound design is top notch.

My only gripe with the game just like the first one. The controls are ass! Parts of me feel like they are even worse than the first game. Hopefully, if there’s a 3rd game they need to do something about those controls like please.

Overall, I had a great time. Play the game.

Little Nightmares II Review

I would've gotten into these games sooner if someone told me they were like Limbo and Inside. This game nails that experience too. It's maintains a tense, creepy atmosphere and has some unsettling boss and enemy designs. There was a moment that actually freaked me out, and I'm hard to scare. The puzzles and platforming are engaging and satisfying. There are stealth sections but the game does provide opportunities for me to fight back which felt good. I prefer my horror games to not be stealth only.

I think I will need to go back and play the first game.

I recently finished Little Nightmares II and I have to say I think it improved on the original. The depth perception can still be an issue at times but overall I would say that part has improved. The gameplay also feels more varied while still having a lot to do with timing and puzzles. It feels like they took what they already did well in the original game's DLC and expanded it. Also the ending is kinda crazy. If you enjoy a bit of atmospheric horror with some timing specific gameplay and puzzles you'll enjoy this. Also smashing things is really satisfying in this game.

LOVING this game so far. Satisfying puzzles and great environments. Creepy areas to explore. The game begins like Limbo except it has (some) color and 3D objects as opposed to 2D black and white. It's identical besides that. But then it goes back to standard Little Nightmares environments and objectives.

Fuck fuck fuck fuck FUCK the area with the mannequins that come to life in the dark is so creepy!!

LOVE this game thus far.

Really enjoyed the atmosphere. Not a horror game if you are looking to be scared but it's mildly haunting. Played Limbo, Inside, Little Nightmares 1 and 2. LN 2 is the ultimate one for me. Heard similar games but didn't think there was one worth playing. If you consider a similar game worth playing let me know.

I've hit a wall and I'm about to give up on this otherwise neat game. I'm trying to run from a bunch of creepy mannequins that you can freeze by shining a flashlight at them. Except the controls for the flashlight are fucking impossible to nail down. I'm about to chuck my gamepad through a window.

This isn't that first time I've had to fight the sloppy, janky semi-ragdoll controls in this game. But until now, I've managed to brute force my way past them.

It's impossible to talk about this game without mentioning Limbo/Inside, which are so similar as to almost make this a "spiritual successor" or "ripoff". But Little Nightmares II is goregous. It feels like someone mined Tim Burton's brain for its essential kernel and embossed it onto the Unreal Engine, and the particular use of puppet body horror is more effective than anything in hyper-realistic games like The Last of Us. It's also my favorite length – something that can be played in one sitting (like Poe short story).

But while we're comparing it to Limbo/Inside, the gameplay here is not as tight. This wouldn't be so bad except that when you're forced to repeat the same stressful section over and over, the sense of "oh shit, how did I survive that?!" becomes "ugh, this again."

I think I'd give this game a 3 on my own, and my wife would give it a 5, so splitting the difference.

The art style is phenomenal, and the monster design is just unbeatable. The puzzles are generally pretty good, but oh boy the combat, action-sequences, and platforming are all troublesome. I'm pretty sure we spent a lot more than 5 hours in this game, but that's because we spent SO MUCH TIME just repeating the same sequences again and again. So much of the difficulty feels artificial. Like you have to get something juuuuust right to make it work. It doesn't matter that you figured out the puzzle, you also need to execute it perfectly. Most of the stealth sequences are less about stealth and more about following patterns.

The story it tells is good, though, and the general mood they've created is engrossing (and, at times, gross).
