Mario Kart 64 is the second main installment of the Mario Kart series. It is the first game in the series to use three-dimensional graphics, however, the characters and items in this game are still two-dimensional, pre-rendered sprites. The game offers two camera angles and three engine sizes: 50cc, 100cc and 150cc. Each kart has distinctive handling, acceleration and top … Read more

It's an improvement over the original in every way, but man, the rubber banding AI drives me crazy enough to lower it from 4 stars.

This is where mario kart as we know it began. All the courses are absolute classics and the roster is perfect. My favourite course has to be either Kalimari Desert or Yoshi Valley.

Why did they feel the need to have bombs randomly placed around the tracks when playing 3 or 4 player matches? My friends and I were playing this last night and totally forgot that these bombs existed. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn them off. My friends and I were playing this last night and totally forgot that these bombs existed. As far as I can tell, there is no way to turn them off. Idk... it just seems like an unusually bad decision for an otherwise great game.

This game had Toad's Turnpike in extra with all the traffic going against you. That by itself makes it a 5 star game, my favouritest Mario Kart stage of all time. Not even the remakes of that stage in other games come close.

This was so much fun... N64 games in the early 2000's were patrician childhood years

This is an iteration I've played on and off over the years, but I recently drove through all the courses again and tried to come to a decision for how I feel about the game as a whole. Back in the day I didn't care for it at all, and felt it was extremely overrated. (Unpleasing aesthetic, slippery turning, the blue shell, etc.) But I've warmed up to it a bit, the game is fine actually overall and has a certain goofy charm to it. (I like the silly things the characters say, or the noises they make.)

I'll still say I prefer SNES Mario Kart though, and will probably continue to have mixed feelings for the franchise as a whole.

Best enjoyed with friends

I just revisited this classic by 100% clearing the single player and had a lot of fun, but there is a bit of jank I don't remember from back in the day, like getting hit by your own red shells or hitting a bad part of a wall and clipping through.

That said, this game really shines in multiplayer and …

That said, this game really shines in multiplayer and I'm sure most of those quirks add to the fun in a less serious setting.

The sound design and graphics reallllly bring me back!

The Real Reason Why Most N64 Controllers Are Sticky

Have you ever played Drunk Driver? It's the game where you have to finish a whole beer during a single race but you can't touch the beer and the controller at the same time. You should try it. It's fun as hell.

The other Mario Karts just don't feel as good as this one does and I don't know why.

Brief Final Thoughts

A solid racer with a solid cast of characters, even if they aren't exactly fully 3D. Of course, there isn't as much to do as later entries but it's still a respectable amount with 16 memorable tracks and a battle mode that can occupy me for hours on end. To this day this game has some of the best soundtracks …

To this day this game has some of the best soundtracks in the entire series, a race on Rainbow road will never get old.

I did not have an N64, but my cousins did. So one Thanksgiving we played Mario Kart with some of the other younger folks who were over for the massive gathering, including a gent who used to live down the street from Bradley Nowell, Sublime's late frontman and owner of Lou Dog. Said gent had a dog who would play with-—and dominate—Lou Dog, and during our karting, I clobbered said gent. So basically I'm more powerful than Sublime and am curious as to the whereabouts of my reality show.

Dare I say the best of the Mario Karts? Probably more because it was some of the best co-op couch gaming in my life, rather than it being an objectively better game than any of the sequels.

Definition of completed: Finished all cups once. Definition of 100%: Finished all cups on all cc, plus reversed. Have pbs on every time trial track.

I have almost 100%ed this. But I don't think I ever got gold on the reversed cups...
