What a breath of fresh air! You don't truly realize how impoverished our conception of fantasy is until we see imagined worlds built from real world stories that have not yet been told. Yes, this game is a bit clunky. It has a Unity sheen to it and some minor visual glitches that pull you out of it every once in a while but considering this is a small independent title, it's at a prouduction level that works swimmingly. The story and world are sometimes hard to trace, but I think that has much more to do with my own ignorance regarding indigenous myth. The combat isn't revolutionary, but it has a good flow to it the more you play, and the level design had me tackling things from new angles and turning my brain on both to solve puzzles and to complete boss fights. Fun fun fun!! Support support support!!
The game is very well-made, but I feel combat needed some more work. Between the lack of a lock on and the long animations, combat can be cumbersome at times. I wasn't prepared for the problem solving by chaining together abilities to attack bosses, and wish I knew that ahead of time rather than looking up how to solve bosses. Maybe this game is hard because it's easy to lose health points, and hard to restore your health during battle waves. Or maybe it's easy because you get to replenish your health between battles and can combine abilities in a way that seemed like cheating.
The game is mostly straightforward. Even though levels are formulaic in some ways, they are thoughtful and unique. The well crafted puzzles come out of nowhere and are harder to solve because of random difficulty spikes. It's always obvious in retrospect, but unexpected at the moment.
