Lacks distinctive elements.

Neon Abyss has a great artstyle, the soundtrack rocks and there’s a lot of variety regarding the bosses, weapons and the different skills you can unlock. The procedurally generated levels, however, leave a lot to be desired.

I don't hate it? *visible confusion*

Playtime: 2h41m

Intro

Neon Abyss is a roguelike action-platformer. You pick a character and try to make your way through 5 maps to face the final boss.

The Good

The Good

  • You aim with the mouse. If your action game has shooting this is basically a must.
  • There's an easy mode. This makes the game substantially less frustrating.
  • Really nice variety in enemies.
  • Some of the weapons are quite neat (sound gun, windmill gun).
  • Backtracking is fairly quick and painless.
  • You can blacklist items and enemies.
  • Weapons get pretty crazy with a bunch of upgrades.

The Bad

  • I've seen (almost?) exact copies of rooms two-three times already.
  • You always seem to have too many purple crystals.
  • Platforming is bland and there's no dash or double jump or anything (only with items).

The Ugly

  • Respeccing costs 20 boss gems (you get 2 per normal boss, 10 for endboss).
  • This cost isn't shown on the respec button. Oof.
  • The grind is insane, of course. You have to spend 200 boss gems on upgrades to even unlock the last page of upgrades.
  • Unlocking new characters takes too long too as a consequence.

Conclusion

Normally i hate this kinda thing but this was entertaining for 2,5 hours. If you unlocked new characters far more quickly i would've stuck with it longer.

5/10

So I was very eager to try this when it came out.

I very much like the play control wherein you can shoot any direction while moving and platforming in a different direction. Makes for more interesting and yet frantic fights. The art is fantastic with tons of bright neon colors and bizarre enemy types.

I very much like the play control wherein you can shoot any direction while moving and platforming in a different direction. Makes for more interesting and yet frantic fights. The art is fantastic with tons of bright neon colors and bizarre enemy types.

But the big downside is there is just too much randomness without any feeling of progress. There is a bunch of treasure chests gated by one-armed bandits, the eggs that house unique allies very frequently fail to hatch and give you nothing, and very often there are far more chests gated by rocks and locks than you have grenades and keys for.

Most of the weapons are fairly bland and not exciting to use. Weapons seem extremely limited for the purpose of creating more challenge, but that makes the game much less fun to play.
