The gameplay has a nice sense of momentum and speed, and competing with your friends for the best time can be quite fun. But the game definitely drags on a bit, and by the final chapter I was begging for it to end. The story does no favors in that regard, as it's a total cringe-fest. I believe the dev was self-aware and leaning into the cringe, and that made it kind of ironically funny at first, but it ceases to be cute well before the credits rolled.
Neon White is a first person shooter/puzzle/platformer? that's all about finishing the levels as quickly as possible. You can only ever hold up to two weapons, which are cards you pick up in the levels, at a time. When picking these up, you have a limited number of shots you can take, as well as discarding the card which gives you another unique ability. This can be a basic jump, a speedboost in a single direction, a grappling hook, among others. To complete a level, you must first kill all enemies within that level for the end gate to open up. The gameplay loop here is incredibly addicting. Your first few attempts at a level may take over a minute, if you even complete it at all. Eventually though you learn how to optimize your run to the point it may only take a handful of seconds to complete the level. There is a story here about being a character sent to hell being brought to heaven to rid it of evils, with some twists and turns along the way. The story is somewhat interesting, but some of the dialog can be really cringey at times. That was nowhere near …

I really enjoyed my time with this game and hope that down the line we can see some kind of sequel, or a similar type of game from these developers.

Read LessI am generally not the biggest fan of one-minute-long-level-try-and-try-again-until-you-do-it-perfectly design, but this game is just fun. Its crappy-but-detailed story, braindead relationship mechanics, and abstract card combat system give it a high effort, mid-2000s flash game feel that I discovered I have an odd affection for. Probably cuz all those dating sims I played on Newgrounds back when I was thirteen.
This shit is fucking sick, Steve Blum kills the voice acting on White and all the characters have interesting backstories and their developments are there to really shit you in the feels. The gameplay is amazing too, the game makes you feel like an absolute badass, running, dodging, shooting, mixed with amazing maps, makes this my indie game of the year. (fucking Stray is fighting me on that statement)
This is a fast-paced action platformer with short levels meant for rushing through as fast as possible. Completing a level requires getting to the end while killing on the enemies. Movement feels great, and playing the levels well ensures you don't ever have to stop moving. There are guns placed in the levels to use to fight off enemies and to traverse the environment as they all have a discard ability that serves as a double jump, air dash, or grappling hook depending on the gun. The game provides the necessary guns needed to progress through the levels in the spaces where they're needed. The player is awarded bronze, silver, gold, and ace medals based on their times. Getting at least a gold medal will raise White's Neon rank which will progress the story and unlock new levels. This forces the player to take on speed-running challenges which are a major part of the fun of this game.

Each level also has a gift hidden in them. These gifts can be used to give to the characters in the game when they are retrieved. They are worth getting because giving gifts to the characters unlocks sidequest levels which are also fun. These levels are focused on reaching the end without dying instead of speed-running. Getting the gifts in the levels are platforming puzzles. Once I find where they are, I have to figure out what combination of guns used from which platform can help me get to it. The puzzle is fun, finding where they are in the level can suck sometimes. They can be too well-hidden sometimes which leads to me moving slowly through levels searching platform-by-platform which can be a frustrating experience.
The story is pretty flat in this game, and there's a significant amount of time spent on telling it. I highly recommend just skipping it all. Playing through the levels are fun as hell, and the only reason to play this game.
Un jueguito muy fresco de speedrunear niveles de plataformeo con cartas, pistolas y katanas. Hay veces que hay juegos hechos para uno. La estética ok, historia y personajes horribles, la OST está bien, pero donde brilla en el diseño de niveles. It´s fine.

As suggested by its tagline, "made by freaks for freaks", this game might not win you over if you are not already interested in speedrunning, puzzle-shooters and/or anime-inspired visual novels but, if you even slightly happen to be, Neon White is a bona-fide cult classic with a genre combination made in heaven.
This game feels so tight and was so easy to play in short bursts. Incredibly satisfying movement controls and unique level designs. The way that the game leads you through levels, you end up playing them a few times over, but you have new goals every time and they take about a minute each so it never feels annoying. Story and style were a turnoff for me but as a game it’s fantastic.
Super quick 1 minute time trial levels. Sooooo fun. Both flashing them and then repeatedly doing them to get the fastest time.
There's often a bit of a puzzle element to figure out to use your given abilities to find shortcuts. After getting the gold medal the game tells you where the shortcut is which is useful but sometimes I wanted to just find it by myself.
Hidden collectibles in each level also fun. Often easy to find but hard to reach, and need to use your power ups creatively to get it.
There's a lot platforming variety as each gun gives you a different platforming ability. Each one they add gets progressively more fun too. The final ability makes you go so absurdly fast. Only ability I wanted was a rope swing.
There are a few levels that are longer 2-5 minutes and those are by far my least favorite levels. I could never Speedrun a full game I don't know how people do it
Biggest con was the writing in the game was too much for me. I made it an hour before I just skipped all the dialogue. And wow there's A LOT of dialogue.
Phenomenal game with style. The gameplay is addicting and the possibilities with the abilities really get you wanting to break the game by bypassing and carving your own path. Speedrunning for this game I imagine is quite nuts.
A Neon White Haiku:
Oddly satisfying
Arcade style speedrun gameplay
Skip the dialogue
Love everything, the best music and the best level design and the best story. Has the absolute creativity behind the unabashed cringe the chaos of everything I want
While not quite in the spirit of my Games Where You Kill God, there's a lot of heaven, hell, and really big hands in Neon White. I finished a playthrough and told myself I'd stop and move on but I keep coming back to get aces and find gifts in all the levels. I'm telling myself it's so I can get an alternate ending but it's really because I can't stand being so close to the next rank. Unfortunately, I just discovered there's a rank above Ace and now I need to convince myself I don't need to grind for it.
If you're playing Neon White on Steam and want to be friends so I can envy your speed, feel free to add me: https://s.team/p/gqg-tdp/RWDKBTGB (I'm not actually sure if we're allowed to share friend URLs on Grouvee; if I'm not supposed to just let me know.)
If I still was 16 years old I would be absolutely obsessed with Neon Violet and 100% convinced "I could fix her".

I just wanted a psychotic big tiddy goth girlfriend.
This game is even cooler than I thought. . .
I think this article put the final nail in the coffin of any desire I had to play this game:
How Neon White brought back the leaderboard chase
In Neon White, each level has a global leaderboard in addition to a smaller leaderboard that’s shared among your friends list. While leaderboards have played a central role in video games since the era of arcade cabinets, Neon White made me care about my scores for the first time in recent memory.
I fully accept that I'm beyond the point in my life wherein comparing scores with other people is something I consider fun. I have no doubt this is a beautifully crafted game, but its entire game play cycle seems to revolve around things I simply don't care about anymore.
this game fuckin rules and everyone should buy it NOW
I am amazed at how few mechanics and game there is here and yet the levels are so well done. It reminds of some of the best early Mario levels.
I really despise the characters and yet I hunt every special gift to give to them in order to unlock their side quests and get to play more exquisitely designed levels.
