I played a bit on the plane until a section where it crashed the vita emulator. So now I'm playing on PS3 (emulated). (I noticed that I probably have it from an Ubisoft giveaway when I came here and saw that I had written a previous status, but I had so many issues with Ubisoft launcher before that I'd rather continue emulating).

The game looks beautiful and it's cute. I love how this game is 12 years old and yet the hand-drawn art hasn't aged a day. Games of the era that probably spent more than this whole game's budget only on realistic 3D graphics now look like shit.

Gameplay is surprisingly good; I don't tend to like turn-based combat, but this one is clicking with me. I like the wiggle-room allowed by the turn system and how it allows you to interrupt enemy attacks by well-timed combos. It adds an extra element that makes fights more dynamic and less about just attacking each enemy in turn with all you've got.

I'm playing Child of Light and it's a gem. Do Ubisoft still make games like this 10 years on? I'm not sure they do...

So, after hearing about this for years, seeing how critically adored it was, always being curious since it launched, I FINALLY picked it up for like 4 dollars on my Switch and...it's...not that good? It's honestly super mediocre, even bordering on kinda meh. I'm NOT a fan of the weird pseudo 2d/3d mixture visually, and it plays like a mobile …

For something with such a long history of being acclaimed, this has really been an eye opening experience.

I like the art style. Combat is fun, reminds me of a mix between FFX-2’s ATB system with the interrupts and Paper Mario’s partner system. Story was okay, didn’t enjoy how all the dialogue had to rhyme even if it fit the storybook theme.

This situation is a little unfortunate, because the game is gorgeous to look at. The art is amazing and the animations are incredibly fluid. I also found the story - what brief part I saw of it - to be engaging.

A fun and charming game with a unique storybook atmosphere. I love the time-based combat which makes you think on your feet and take risks. A fun and charming game with a unique storybook atmosphere. I love the time-based combat which makes you think on your feet and take risks. I end up always going for "Very Long" attacks that inevitably get interrupted when my opponents cast before me. I also love the Oculi system -- extremely simple, but allows for dozens of customization options.

However, my main complaint is that Child of Light feels little bare bones. as if they didn't have the budget to make it complete. For example, I would've liked:

  • A more complete overworld. I just got done playing Hollow Knight and this "platformer" feels disappointing in comparison. I mean, the villages don't even have shops! I hardly feel compelled to explore this flat world.
  • More information. Am I just supposed to guess which attacks are magic and which are physical? Also, how can I tell mid-battle what element my Oculi-enhanced attacks are? How do I know what element my enemies are, unless it's obvious? (I.e. the spiders on fire are obviously fire.)
  • More enemies. I felt like I was seeing the same enemies in different shades all throughout the game. I swear, they only had about five or so different models that they simply re-skinned and put into later levels.

I'm also really mad that Norah ends up leaving you even though I spent a lot of time and stardust on her.
