Yakuza: Kiwami is an enhanced remake of the original Yakuza game for PlayStation 2, not just an HD port. While the original PS2 release also had English voice-acting for western release, this PS4 remake only retains Japanese voice-acting for authenticity with available subtitles for other countries.

I literally started Yakuza Kiwami the same day I finished Yakuza 0. I think this was a great decision. The story hits so much harder when the main characters' back stories are still fresh on your mind. Apart from the — in my opinion — very good main story, you get the classic Yakuza mix of over-the-top side quest and minigames. At first, I didn't like the fight mechanics quite as much as the ones in Yakuza 0: sure, "kiwami" means "extreme" or "ultimate", but sometimes it felt almost like the game was cheating. But I sucked it up, did some more side quests to git gud and quite enjoyed the fights afterwards. Learn to embrace Rush style; it can be incredibly useful in the later stages of the game. Maybe it was this initial difficulty that made finishing the pretty tough final boss fight on first try even more rewarding.

Overall another great entry in the series, I'm tempted to immediately continue with Kiwami 2, though I probably should play other games too.

Yakuza Kiwami (Xbox SS)

Iba a ser una run rápida de historia y no hacer secundarias... y no lo ha sido. Se le ven las costuras de los años pero mantiene su esencia: el contraste entre la historia dramática y el sentido del humor constante característico de la saga. (L) Majima.

KIRYU-CHANNNN!!!

My fave entry and I had tons of fun replaying this new remaster just like I did the og, so many years ago! Kiryu is the epitome of badassness!! Haruka is adorable and as always I wished that my boo Majima had more airtime in this one. All in all, 10/10!

Yo, Kiryu Chan!

Kiryu is a big, dumb idiot -- and I love him for it.

The indoor fight sequences where you progress to the next corridor by kicking dudes face-first through closed doors will never not be awesome.

Aside from that, the act of fighting random enemies on the street gets repetitive & cumbersome fairly quickly. But, the story is engaging, and was enough to propel me through the game.

Majima Everywhere is a neat enough add-in. But as your level ramps up, he really is everywhere, and it kind of made me want him to go away so I could just play the game.

The talk-to-girls-at-the-cabaret-club minigames. Meh. There really isn't an interesting minigame to sink your teeth into like the run-your-own-business games in Y0 and Y7:LaD.

Yakuza Kiwami is a decent game, though it's held back a bit by its PS2 lineage. And did they really need to just straight-up abandon the puppy at the end?

Three out of five.

This was my first venture in the Yakuza series and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I didnt really know what to expect but I really wanted to give at least one entry of the series a whirl. I read somewhere that Kiwami would be an ideal entry point. I really enjoyed Kiryu as a character but I struggled to follow all the Yakuza families and I found it a little overwhelming early in the game. Perhaps an earlier entry in the series would have been a better starting point? The map itself is semi open world, relatively small and easy to navigate. Regardless there is still plenty to do in way of side missions , mini games and random street encounters. The "Majima Everywhere" encounters were my personal favourites. Highly entertaining. The combat is impressive, showing off four different fighting styles. I had fun gaining XP and developing the effectiveness of the different combat styles and performing a variety of different finishers. But its the main storyline which made me stay with the game. An immersive story with twists and turns is something I understand the Yakuza series is known for, and its no different in Yakuza Kiwami. The characters are unique and very well fleshed out and the clever use of music add an extra layer to the story and strengthen the emotional investment. Overall I would say the solid combat mechanics, vibrant setting and immersive story make this a game I would recommend and no doubt I will visit other games from the series in the very near future.

DIFFICULT STRUGGLE

Do not play on Hard in your first playthrough, at the final 2 chapters you will suffer due not balanced boss mechanics (too much annoying spongy enemies). Btw, final boss fight best part of game.

The title is true. I've only played Like a Dragon and Yakuza 0, but Kiwami is definitely my favorite of those three. That's saying a lot as I absolutely loved both of those games, but there is something about Kiwami that feels truly special. Maybe it's the combat, which to me is an improvement over 0 (though how I could not say as they are very similar). Maybe it's the focus on Kiryu, who shines in Kiwami because he does not share the spotlight with Majima. Maybe it's the Majima difference? I loved playing as him in 0, thought he was amazing, but that rivalry that he comes at you with in Kiwami is truly unique. I feared him at first, and then by the end of the game I was seeking him out. I needed to best him.

I never would have guessed, a few years ago, that I would, in 2022, have become so invested in this series that I have now purchases every game, including the two Judgment games, and have the Isshin remake as my most anticipated game in 2023 (unless Spider-Man actually comes out next year). I'll be curious to see how I feel once I've put a few more of the games under my belt. Will Kamurocho feel stale by Yakuza 6? Will Kiryu? I can both imagine that happening and have a hard time believing it.

Not much more to say than that. Loved the story. Loved the characters. Loved the rivalries. All the stars.

Yakuza Kiwami was the first Yakuza game for me, and it served as what I'd call a very rough introduction in retrospect. Though I enjoyed experiencing Kiryu's story, I found it was the only thing keeping me going through the game, as the weak combat felt more like a slog than something I looked forward to.

Kiwami's combat, simply put, feels awful. Standard enemies will often get KO'd in a single combo or two and offer no variety besides what weapon they're currently holding. Bosses are slugfests with oversized health pools - even with fully upgraded damage late game, bosses take forever to take out. You're effectively encouraged to keep your inventory completely full of healing items so you can refill your health during boss fights, which you'll likely often need. Your health doesn't fill between fights, so you'll need to frequently stop and find restaraunts to eat food at.

One curious part of Kiwami is that although you have no kind of lock-on as the player, enemies absolutely have this ability. If you dodge a move during one of their combos, in most instances, enemies will magically swing on a dime as they complete their punch. As for you, the input buffer can't be interrupted often times, so if you try to cancel a punch by dodging once you've buffered it, no good! Punch the air for another three seconds. Blocking works better, but since Kiryu doesn't change direction while holding his block, enemies can dodge behind you and then starting hitting you.

The worst part in boss fights are how many moves will knock you down. The final boss gauntlet, as well as many boss fights that featured guns, were the worst offenders of this - gunshots immediately knock you down and often have little windup to allow you to dodge them (as well as no indicators to inform you that someone is aiming the gun at you). Some of the late game fights had me feel like I was spending half of it on the floor.

Kiwami's story is entertaining, though there's a lot of sections where you're doing very video-game-y tasks of fetching item A to give to someone to get B to give to someone to get C.... At the least, many of the characters that Yakuza introduces aren't throwaways - many of the supporting cast members are terrifically written and have more importance to the story than what you immediately need from them, which I appreciated.

The conclusion to Kiwami's story is dramatic, and relatively satisfying. There are some story elements that are a little dramatic for the sake of drama - Kazuma confessing the truth about Kiryu's parents isn't explored in the game, even though that would give much-needed characterization to Kiryu - and, Yumi's amnesia feels like a pointless story element given how quickly she recovers from it.

Speaking of, Kiryu seriously lacks much character in the series. He often comes off as a blank slate plus some badass one liners - the only character he really has is his love for Yumi and the desire to protect her daughter, Haruka. It would've been nice to see more of the bond between Kiryu and the side cast of characters like Date in lowkey moments. Kiryu barely even has anything to say about how much the world has changed in the ten years he was in prison, aside from some lines about cell phones!

Overall, Yakuza Kiwami was a fine game for the 15 hours I spent with it, but it didn't particularly leave me wanting more, though I may try Yakuza 0 in the future. I'd give Yakuza Kiwami a 5/10 - it's not a bad game, but I can't say that I'd really recommend it overall. The story is largely carried by the terrific voice acting and strong visuals that keep your interest from scene to scene - everything in between is an afterthought.

A good game but one that gets outdone by others in the franchise

What I liked:

  • Kiryu. How could you not like Kiryu? I feel like it is impossible.
  • Kamurocho. As a world map, its great. Small, but dense and full of secrets to find.
  • Combat. Very solid overall. Lots of skill tree points to fill out. Not the biggest fan of unlocking some of the skill tree through Majima, but it isn't …

  • Combat. Very solid overall. Lots of skill tree points to fill out. Not the biggest fan of unlocking some of the skill tree through Majima, but it isn't a big deal.

What I thought was "okay":

  • Story. It was a pretty good story overall, but I have a feeling there are going to be way more interesting plots in the franchise. Learning more about the origins of Kazama and the orphanage was cool. Seeing Nishiki go down the dark path due to his envy of Kiryu was interesting. Jingu just kind of appeared out of nowhere. Wasn't a very interesting villain to me and was kind of only there.
  • Side characters. I only have a point of reference to the 7th game, but the side characters in this one felt kinda meh comparatively. Date is just kind of "bland detective". The whole story with his daughter made him slightly more interesting, but not very much. The host club owners and workers are just kind of there. Haruka is interesting and its cool to see her get attached to Kiryu.

What I hated:

  • The bosses. My god, the bosses. Every boss fight has a ton of random trash mob enemies. They just knock you down over and over. Kiryu gets lightly touched with a knife, he falls to the floor dramatically. So many bosses stun lock you into being comboed for a minute straight in this game. You have to play lame to even think about surviving some of these fights Jingu fight felt especially irritiating, I spent more time on the ground than standing up in that one.

I don't think this is the peak of the franchise by any means, but it is still a good time. Just be prepared for a little bit of roughness around the edges when you play, especially going into the boss fights.

Yakuza Kiwami feels a lot like 0... But without the magic.

I love how the game maintained things that made 0 so incredible. Substories are still hilariously good, the soundtrack BANGS, characters are very charismatic, Kiryu is even more badass, mini-games are super fun and Kamurocho is better, probably becoming one of the best fully-realized cities in gaming. All of this while packing a great story that's made even better if you followed how everything developed from the previous game to now. Gameplay-wise, it's 'ok' and I like how easy they made to get money, CP and EXP in this game, without taking away the challenge. Playing Kiwami almost felt like going back home. Almost, because home has flaws now.

This "Majima Everywhere" thing, for example, at first it, felt entertaining, but midway through the game, I couldn't stand Goro anymore! Majima was a protagonist on 0, why did they reduce his character to this? His importance in the campaign doesn't even make sense! Also, why lock the ENTIRE Dragon Style behind his boring fights? This is bad design talking. What happened to the amazing writing? 0 felt epic, well explained, shocking and emotionally gripping. Kiwami, on the other hand, while still GOOD, manages to make a mess of the plot, with a jarring pace, nonsensical moments, constant diversions and a VERY slow build-up. It was good, but too imprecise.

The final issue I had with this game is what almost ruined it: The combat system is broken! I've experienced some of the worst battles in gaming here. They felt UTTERLY unbalanced, unfair and repetitive. Aside from the AMAZING final boss, EVERY SINGLE BOSS SUCKS! These fights were cheap and tedious. Bosses dodge forever, knock you down with ease, defend almost all of your attacks, regenerate health, repeat the same moves, stunlock Kiryu... I could really go on. Basically, if you don't have enough medicine and patience, you'll be annoyed and frustrated until the end. Which is a shame, because 0 had GREAT boss fights and I felt that, if not for this mistake, this game would've been EXTREMELY better! Once again, bad design.

If you liked 0, play Kiwami. You'll like it better because of its predecessor. It's not as good as the previous one, but it continues the entertainment 0 gave us and opens doors for more great games. it just lacks quality. If you play it, do soldier on, because the story will get insipid at times and the combat will make you go insane.
