2 Black 2 Furious

Replayed on my Nintendo 3DS. Played a nuzlocke run of Black 2 on challenge mode. Fun challenge, especially at the beginning. The game itself is great with lots of pokemon variety and an interesting main quest, although the story is standard pokemon-fare. Lost steam towards the end of the journey but had a lot of fun throughout. For my money, this artstyle was the peak of pokemon by far.

A great follow up to Pokemon Black. The additions to the world were very cool with new towns to visit and older versions of all the characters.

Bro...

This game is low key perfect.

Like the story is cracked, the mons are cracked, the characters are cracked, the difficulty isn't a baby goo goo gaga difficulty like it actually forces you to use your brain. This game is goated bro

Super solid entry in the series! Good balance of story and world exploring; though, playing this without a recent playthrough of Black or White, I do wish we had a little more of Unova to explore pre-Champion.

Unova has always been one of my favorite generations, but some of the designs are so weird and so much of the aesthetic feels like it was immediately forgotten and reversed in X/Y. Like, look at a Durant and tell me that Nintendo didn't think it was pulling off a tougher, more teenaged Pokemon. Jury's out on whether or not they actually were, but regardless, the Unova games, and Black2/White2 in particular, give the sense of something different, a game starring Pokemon, but not necessarily driven by the franchise's desperate need to survive.

Originally started in 2019 with a plan of a very calculated playthrough with 16 traded eggs to build a team from my Pokemon White save. Wanted to play with a variety of exclusively Gen V Pokemon while mixing and matching teams from the 16 for each gym; 4 Pokemon per gym battle was my own rule.

Things got slow towards the end of the year, and then played on and off throughout 2020, until finally things got kicked into high gear around the 13th of Jan 2020 and I sped through the last 3 gyms and finished the game.

Was an interesting experience having my team for the whole game planned out, and also balancing the large team of 16 Pokemon. Might wanna cut down that number the next time I try something similar.

I have been trying to fill in all the missing links I have with the pokemon series and this game was one of the last ones. I am not fond of generation 5, especially Pokemon Black, but this one redeems the regions a little bit. The designs and group of Pokemon are still weak to me, but the region did a good job of reinventing the Pokedex and making the game more fun than its dreary and monochromic predecessor. The story is not that bad, the graphics and gameplay style is very traditional, no change there, but it takes the formula and does all it can with it. I have noticed that I am growing tired of the formulaic style of these games. Having new pokemon is a big plus, but when everything else stays the same as a Pokemon fan it can get quite dull and I felt that in this game. Thankfully the future installments after this one began to try different things at least, I would not have been able to put up with another generation like 5, my least favorite one so far. enter image description here

Building atop the game previously, B2W2 does a good job in immediately fixing the flaws of it. The story while not as strong conceptually as the first one does hold itself up well this time around if not better now that the pacing is actually set well for the characters and tone and doesn't willfully spend time on wasted errands of little value. The campaign is also a bit stronger, both in terms of more customization in Pokemon teams as well as being more challenging. The Hard Mode variant unlocked for NG+ in one of the versions is a real blessing for longtime players. I also find the Pokemon World Tournament postgame to be fanservice I can get on board with.

This all combines to make a more enjoyable package than the previous but I still found myself not particularly engaged in Unova as a region and the story still not to my liking. It's a refined Unova, maybe even the best it can get without completely reworking it. It's still limited by the confines the Pokemon formula set out to me but I'm sure I'm a minority on that issue, and is a longer discussion than simply saying that I found B2/W2 alright. (6.5/10)

Right after the second badge. By far better than its predeccesor up to this point. I fear, however, that the story might be the only thing that is really lacking, at least for now.
