I need to start by saying that I’m not a Disney fan. In fact, a month before I picked up this game, I made fun of my sister-in-law for playing it. However, during an incredibly stressful period in my life, this was the PERFECT game to mindlessly put my mind at ease. It’s like Animal Crossing but with actual quests, more to do, and a plot. Did I care about the plot? No. Did I care about the characters? No. Did I care about anything in this game? No. But did I sink days, no, WEEKS, into it? Absolutely, and I would do it again. It seems like I’m negging this game but I just want to emphasize that this is the perfect mindless, silly, yet engaging game for anyone to enjoy, regardless of their love or lack thereof of Disney IP. I highly recommend this game and will be sure to keep it installed on my console to break open for any future bad days.

Maybe part of it is that I'm put off by the limits on gameplay progression--I expect that in free mobile games where they're trying to get you to pay to overcome obstacles, but when I've paid for the full game (or in this case, gotten a free month of Game Pass), I expect to be able to progress at my pace and not get soft-locked. That and I wish there were more characters from the Disney vaults and not just the newer films.

Anyway--this is enjoyable for now, but I don't think I'll be picking up a copy when my month is up.

I have mixed feelings about this one. On the one hand... Clearly I haven't given up on it. I come back to this game any time there's an update that adds a new character and typically play it on a daily basis until I've maxed out that character's friendship and completed all their quests. If nothing else, I can say they're pretty good about always adding new events and quests and things for the players to do. Boredom is this type of game's biggest enemy, and they're successfully avoiding that issue.

But my god, have I never played another game that felt like the developers just did not give a shit about things like beta-testing for problems to the extent that I get that vibe from Dreamlight Valley. And it's no wonder why. It's Disney. Known for rubbing it in everyone's faces that they care more about money than their customers' experiences and people will still buy their products anyway.

But it is no exaggeration to say that there is ALWAYS something wrong with this game. There's a new bug with every single update. Currently it's glitching so bad my character can barely walk. So keep in mind that this game can be just as frustrating as it is enjoyable.

I finally caved the other night and grabbed the DLC, despite being super irked with the fact that I had to pay full price for it on top of already paying more for the game than you'd have to pay now to get the game and DLC bundled.

(From previous status about this: I spent like $85 or something on this (Ultimate Edition) when it first came out, and now the expansion is $30. I wasn't really bothered by them changing their minds about this going ftp after a year or so (it's staying paid), but now the game and expansion are being sold together as the "Gold Edition" for $70 and there is no Ultimate Edition anymore. So I paid more than that for the base game and now am expected to shell out ANOTHER $30 for the expansion if I want the new area and all of the new characters it adds, but new players can get everything for $70? I guess you could say I got to play for a year with what I paid because it was early access, but considering the fact that it's not going ftp now, this is ridic.)

I'm gonna say it's worth it, since I've already sunk over 300 hours into this game and continue to enjoy it. Buying the DLC opens up a short new quest line where you unlock a new gate inside the Dream Castle. (The Dream Castle is where all of the doors for new characters are located whenever they're added in updates. There are still a TON of unmarked doors, leaving room for many upcoming character additions.) This gate leads to a platform where there's an archway transporter leading you to the Isles. There were like five other arches there, which tells me lots of DLC in the future.

The new area has three huge biomes, many new characters, a new hourglass tool, new fish/flowers/gems/gatherable materials, a second Scrooge shop, another Remy restaurant, new Goofy stalls with new crop seeds, etc. You unlock the shops in much the same way as in the main Valley, but I have like 1.2mil gold at this point and was able to upgrade them to max right away. It took a lot longer when first starting out with the game. There are tons of new quests and things to explore, and you can easily fast travel back and forth between the Isles and the main Valley without having to deal with the gates and Castle and stuff.

Free updates and events roll out all the time with characters, outfits, decorations, etc., so there's still a lot to do in the base game without grabbing the DLC. But so far it's been a great expansion.

A year ago I swore I would never play this. I thought I didn't like the art style and I'm not a huge Disney fan. Then last year, I kept seeing people's decorated valleys and they looked amazing, and people were talking about a new questline that was about depression (in a cozy Disney game? what??), and I had to eat my words and finally got the game last fall.

Now I'm 100+ hours in and I'm just getting more and more obsessed with it. With the roadmap for future free updates and DLC, this feels like that chill, cozy game I actually can take my time with a play my one save for a looong time. Other than the Star Paths, I feel like there is no rush with anything at all, and I can log on to play 15 minutes or 5 hours and both times feel good!

So I haven't played much in the past few months. Played for the Halloween event and then tapered off while I was working on Star Ocean, so I didn't look into the expansion info much. Since I've been back to it for the past couple of days for the winter event, I noticed many of the villager characters having items I've never seen for their daily requested items--gems and flowers and such that def aren't in the Valley. Then I realized it was stuff from the expansion island.

I don't usually rate/review games until I've finished them, but I'm not sure Disney Dreamlight Valley is the sort of game that ends, per se. Or, if it does, whether that end can actually be reached yet. But none of that really matters in terms of my impression of the game, so I'm going to go ahead and do this now. I mean, I've been playing for a solid two months at this point; there's very little that developers Gameloft could do to make me completely reevaluate my stance.

First of all, Dreamlight Valley is a buyer-beware title. At some point (I've heard later this year) it's a game that is going to go free-to-play, so if you buy it now the main thing you're getting is extra time and an early leg up in terms of—what? currency? attire/furniture? that sort of thing? I forget the exact details—so I don't really recommend it unless you're keen enough to play right now to spend the money for the privilege. The reason I spent the money is I wanted to play right now (well, the "right now" of two months ago) and because whatever bundle I bought included a free pet (a cute sea turtle) to tag along with my character. I'm very much a sucker for tag along pets in these sorts of games. (I should note, in case the pet is a big draw for you: You can get pets both as you play and in the in-game store, so the purchase bundle should not be your deciding factor unless you're just super into the type of animal being offered. But after two months of regular play, I have a rabbit, two squirrels, one or two things I'm blanking on off hand, plus a pig. And the pig—which I unlocked through playing, not in-game currency—is the only pet I use now.)

With that "buyer-beware" out of the way, I should also note that even if I quit Dreamlight Valley today and never launch the game again, I absolutely feel like I got my money's worth out of it.

For being a game I've been playing for two months (and despite the threat in the above paragraph, I'm not quitting today, or tomorrow), Dreamlight Valley is a rather simple game built on a fairly simple premise: You are a normal person suddenly thrust into a magical world of Disney characters. This world has gone awry, as a dark magic has become entrenched in the valley, seeding disorder and weakening the memories of its occupants. This force is actually called "The Forgetting," but as you arrive, Merlin—one of the few remaining people in the valley—thinks maybe YOU have the innate magic to counteract the Forgetting and restore the valley to what it once was. To do so you are given a handful of tools (a watering can, a shovel, a fishing rod, and a pick ax), a nice stretch of early quests that serve as a tutorial, and are otherwise given free roam to gather resources and complete quests at your leisure.

It's very simple stuff. I cannot emphasize that enough. This is not a game you'll play for its satisfying mechanics or varying gameplay. There are two basic mechanics to everything: Gather resource, craft multiple resources into a new resource. That's it. That's the game. But it's not a game you're playing for the gameplay.

It's a game you play because you like the idea of living in a valley with a bunch of modern and classic Disney characters. You start off with Merlin, Mickey Mouse, Goofy, and Scrooge McDuck. But you'll quickly start unlocking new characters, some of whom are hidden away in not-immediately-accessible parts of the valley, others whom you have to travel to other realms to procure. Each has a friendship level that's influenced by having discussions with them and giving them gifts (as well as allowing them to hang out with you), each has their own set of quests that unlock as your friendship level goes up, and for each increase in friendship level, you get a little reward exclusive to them. And when you max out the friendship level of a character, never fear there are plenty of other characters to focus on because boy howdy are there a lot.

There are currently eight regions in Dreamlight Valley, six of which need to be unlocked by playing the game. Each region has its own personality and unique resources. I wouldn't be shocked if more regions are added—there's potential for a LOT more characters based on the number of inaccessible doors in the castle—and retail space is already starting to feel a bit cramped. (If I remember right, there's 30 characters now, a lot of whom have their own home.) The last character I unlocked actually had me a bit stumped as to where I was going to place his house. Ended up having to remove another structure I had placed to fit his house. Which is fine, but because each region IS unique, I don't like to mess too much with the preexisting foliage/rock/etc setup because I view those as pretty necessary to the way each area feels. I've moved things around a bit for the last few houses I've had to add, but you do that too many times and the region loses its uniqueness. And there's a couple of regions that simply don't seem well suited to habitation beyond those who already live there. The "Glade of Trust" as an unassuming name for a gloomy, muddy, boggy land that you could technically put a house on—the game will let you—but feels ill-advised on a practical level. Then the Forgotten Lands is a miserable tangle of dark, clustered forest populated by green fire pits everywhere. Tough to navigate as-is, let alone if you'd start trying to shift things for house placement. All that to say that while we could just see this be total sum of real estate, especially since we've hit all the teased regions (as far as I'm aware; the original map is now filled), there's quickly going to be a distinct tradeoff to increasing the number of characters in the game unless more regions are added.

That said, I'm not necessarily in favor of adding more regions. Now, this may boil down to my particular play style, but my intention every day when I launch the game is start off by gathering resources in each region. What was initially a fun and breezy way to begin playing back when I had three or four regions started to feel more cumbersome and annoying by the time I hit five or six regions. Now with eight regions it typically takes two gaming sessions to accomplish. If they'd decide to add more regions I'd probably have to change my play philosophy from "full clear each day" to "full clear half one day, full clear half the next" or something like that. Arguably, I should be considering that now, as between full clearing and going to Scrooge's store to spend my new full-clear funds I rarely have time to actually do missions.

I mean, the missions kind of complete themselves. The main thing that differentiates them from aimless resource gathering is the dialogue with whatever character is giving you the mission. That and the frequent need to craft (or cook) stuff. Anyway, even though the core of missions is the same gathering that you'd do on a full clear, there is this sense of needing to run around as missions often require checking in with other characters, assembling stuff at crafting stations to advance to the next part of the mission. Essentially, it's focused busywork instead of the mindless busywork of full clearing. Even though the story will lend some missions a sense of urgency, there's no timers at play so they can be completed whenever. For the sake of immersion I do like to obey that urgency when dictated, but there's no negative consequences to dallying (unless you count the mission-giver saying "We need to talk" every time you walk by them).

While I wouldn't want to suggest that the stories throughout Dreamlight Valley are inconsequential, they aren't (in my mind) a compelling reason to pick up the controller. They're cute, they're fine, some are forgettable (ha) and a few have some nice beats to them. But there is a bit of a sad undercurrent to the overarching story. (The rest of this paragraph will be a bit spoilery. Skip to the next paragraph if that's something you care about in this kind of game.) The game opens with your character leaving the big city and its responsibilities (either college or job related, given the presumed age of the character) to the place you grew up. Returning home has a way of shaking the cobwebs off long forgotten things and, after falling asleep in the lawn, you wake up in Dreamlight Valley. Later you learn that you used to spend a lot of time in Dreamlight Valley in a time before the Forgetting, when you were just a kid. These characters were your companions and friends. Together you all made the valley a wonderful, fruitful place. But after your unexpected departure (perhaps growing too old for imaginary worlds, or maybe your brain got overloaded with academics and real life friends, or maybe you moved away, whatever), things at Dreamlight Valley slid into disrepair, partially because you weren't there to do your tasks, and partly because the Forgetting did its best to take over the land. But you're back! Running around, doing all the things you did before, doing your best to thwart the Forgetting (which seems to be a part of yourself that was left behind and become twisted by isolation and time). It's all neat and tidy from a story structure standpoint, but when you think about it, like, it's essentially a story about a grown up so beaten by real life that they retreat into their childhood imaginative games as a coping mechanism. It's kinda depressing if you think about it. Like, is there any sort of happily-ever-after here? Either Dreamlight Valley exists without our character when they return to real life, once again forgotten, or they stay in Dreamlight Valley forever, day after day running around, gathering resources and otherwise completely avoidant of real life. In my mind that's kind of a downer. Maybe they've found out a narrative workaround—assuming there is an end (either now or forthcoming)—or maybe they'll just retcon that entire thing by never mentioning that opening bit of character development ever again. Or maybe it's supposed to be some kind of meta commentary on the state of adults who play video games, themselves a form of imaginative retreat from real life.

All that said, it's really, really hard to give too much weight to any of my above complaints considering how much time I've put into the game, faithfully full clearing every day for the last two months. Slowly—but significantly!—advancing quests. It's been nice to not have to think, to just put on some music and mechanically move through the various regions of Dreamlight Valley to hoard resources and sell resources and buy new outfits for my character or new furniture for my character's house. (Frankly, while the town building element isn't really my bag, I think the game's tools—ie, the ability to move or remove practically everything on the map, to craft things like roads and lamps and whatnot, to micromanage basically every element of how things appear—are strong enough that players who focus on that side might find Dreamlight Valley even more compelling than I do; I like hoarding that stuff, but not so much the using thereof.)

Anyway, if resource gathering games (and a certain fondness for Disney animated films and TV series) is in your wheelhouse, I think Dreamlight Valley is absolutely worth checking out. Whether or not you want to spend the money for early access or wait for free-to-play? That is on you.

Quand j'ai vu un jeu développé par Gameloft, de vieux souvenirs de jeux bootlegs pour téléphones mobiles à clapets me sont revenus en mémoire. Quand on m'a annoncé que le jeu serait Free to play, j'ai un peu grincé des dents. Pourtant durant le nintendo direct, la filiation avec Animal Crossing semblait évidente et prometteuse et les premiers retours des joueurs et joueuses de la beta payante étaient très positifs !

J'ai donc décidé de sauter le pas et d'acheter le jeu sur Switch. Il faut garder à l'esprit que le jeu est en early access, il n'est pas encore fini, on peut espérer une amélioration des performances et une correction des bugs (encore très présents à ce stade).

Derrière une histoire qui s'annonce de prime abord bateau (vous fuyez une vie stressante de citadine et vous réveillez dans un monde magique) et un bon sentimentalisme sauce disney, le jeu se permet des incartades plutôt sombres.

Le monde de Dreamlight, sorte de multivers disney où convergent les différentes franchises (un peu à la sauce kingdom heart) est corrompu par un mal appelé Oubli. A l'aide de la magie de dreamlight, que vous pouvez farmer en exploitant les différentes ressources du village et en effectuant vos quêtes quotidiennes, vous devrez libérer le royaume de ce fléau, débloquer de nouveaux biomes et sauver vos personnages préférés. La chose étant que pour les personnages, l'oubli a des conséquences physiques. Les personnages errent hagards dans la vallée et le jeu en profite pour parler de sujets plutôt sérieux de manière détournées, le deuil, la séparation, les maladies dégénératives (la moitié d'un des personnages l'a oublié, lui se souvient, comment faire pour l'aider, continuer à vivre...).

Et c'est à ce moment précis que l'on se rend compte que les enfants ne sont absolument pas la cible du jeu. La vraie cible du jeu, ce sont les kidults trentenaires qui sont toujours fans de disney ! D'ailleurs votre personnage est adulte.

Du coup, le roaster des personnages du jeu interroge. Si l'on met de coté la bande de mickey et ses amis (5 personnages), on a 1 licence des années 60 (1 personnage), 3 licences des années 90 ( 6 personnages), 3 licences des années 2000 (3 personnages) et pas moins de 8 personnages des années 2010 issus de 4 licences. Ce ne sont clairement pas les licences avec lesquelles les personnages ont grandi. Ou sont les classiques Disney ? Alors oui, il y a des références, dans les recettes de cuisine, le mobilier, les biomes mais cela reste surprenant.

Si l'on s'intéresse au gameplay pur, on est sur un mélange, simulation, farming, quête fedex pour crafter des items. C'est reposant. Arriver au bout du contenu scénarisé du jeu m'aura pris 90h ce qui est une durée de vie tout à fait acceptable. En sachant que certaines quêtes demandent d'attendre un certain nombre d'heures réelles sans possibilité de voyager dans le temps puisque cela corrompt votre sauvegarde. Malheureusement contrairement à un animal crossing et très certainement à cause d'un problème de performance, vous ne pouvez pas réellement interagir sur l'environnement qui vous entoure sans passer par le gestionnaire. Envie de couper des arbres ou de déplacer un meuble ? Vous devez passer par le gestionnaire d'aménagement et supprimer l'item, un peu à la manière d'un jeu Tycoon. Cela brise quelque peu l'immersion et s'avère rapidement frustrant lorsque vous êtes sur console, notamment parce que la nuit certains biomes sont tout bonnement illisible avec tous leurs arbres que vous aimeriez élaguer très vite. Il n'y a pas non plus d'éclairage dynamique. Les lampadaires que vous pouvez poser n'éclaire pas autour d'eux comme les torches de minecraft.

Le jeu reste cependant très casu, très chill, très généreux. Pourquoi pas cinq étoiles ? Déjà, un manque de contenu en dehors des quêtes. Les quêtes journalières ne permettent que d'accumuler de la dreamlight mais, lorsque vous avez débloqué tous les biomes, à part une petite poignée pour vos enchantements de farm, vous n'en avez plus besoin. Le niveau maximum d'amitié avec vos villageois et par là la fin de leur contenu scénarisé peut s'obtenir en quelques jours à peine. De même, il n'y a plus de grosse mise à jour de biome de prévu de toute l'année 2023. Qu'est-ce qu'il reste à faire ? De la décoration. Uniquement de la décoration. A trop vouloir ressembler à Animal crossing, Disney Dreamlight valley en a aussi pris ses travers.

De même avec l'arrivée du free to play, et même si les développeurs ont promis de ne pas brider les fonctions centrales du jeu, nous ne pouvons être sûrs que les micro-transactions du jeu, au tarif élevé, ne serviront que l'usage de cosmétiques...

As for me, I can’t say I was hooked. Dreamlight Valley is a world of cardboard, its inhabitants little more than set decoration and animated sources of material gain. It’s a game about menial labor for menial labor’s sake, the most monotonous elements of a life sim emphasized and weakly justified by the shallow inclusion of marketable Disney characters. It masquerades as a game about friendship while portraying personal relationships as little more than means to an end. Worse than all of that, though, it’s simply boring.

I still have a few Valley residents who haven't hit Level 10 yet, but I'm not in a rush to do so. I threw gifts at Ariel like crazy because I wanted the dress from her Level 10 quest, and have been running around in this fancy gown for days, haha.

Excited for the new event, characters, and house customization. But that drops on the same day as Theatrhythm so I'm gonna be busy next weekend!

You can sell whatever foraged stuff you pick up, as well as the foods that you cook, but all furniture and clothing gets put into your furniture/clothing inventories to be used and nothing beyond that.

When the game first came out, probably a week in, I saw a full outfit in the clothing shop that I was gonna save up for that day (it was like 40k). I went off to do some tasks and mine gems for money and such, and while harvesting some crops, out pops a pouch of clothing loot. It was THAT outfit. Saved me 40k and I was really happy to find it, but what if I'd gotten that drop like five minutes after buying it?

I know it doesn't just not spawn items that you already have, because I bought some Beauty and the Beast gold rose earrings two days ago, and just got them again from a loot drop. I spent like 11k on them or something. Look in my inventory, and it's just the one pair there because you can't sell them anyway, so why show doubles? I dunno, I know it's early access and that things could change, but there's so much crafting that you could make money off of instead of that being limited to selling foraged stuff for crap gold or doing the whole farm-harvest-cook-sell routine for more than a few hundred gold. Just feels weird to find/grow ingredients and be able to sell the cooked meals, but you can't sell the crafted products that you also spent a bunch of time finding materials for.

This game is doing SO MANY things right. I was telling my friend about some of it and we were joking that the devs must be Animal Crossing fans who got sick of how many QOL things we all want but will never get.

  • First and foremost, it is on a real-time clock, thank fuck, but it's also the absolute best way of implementing it: crops, fruit-bearing plants, mining points, etc., around the island grow/replenish within like 15 minutes or so as they might in an accelerated-clock sim (there aren't any visible timers so I'm estimating); Scrooge McDuck's shop has new items each day but you aren't rushed to buy them like you would be in basically any other sim that isn't AC because of the clock (he also has a full catalog ordering system); you aren't forced to go to bed, at any point, ever.
  • There's a tool wheel, and the tools do not take up inventory space.
  • Crafting and cooking pull right from the storage. I have a chest in my house and two right outside by my crafting station. The game never came right out and said it, but I was doing some gathering and stashed some stuff, then went to craft, and was able to make things that used materials I didn't have in my pockets.
  • Any decorations that you craft go into your furniture inventory, and clothing is separated into a wardrobe inventory. Your main inventory pockets are expandable. The fact that you can access all three of these inventories at any time by simply pressing X is fantastic. You can move trees, fences, buildings, etc., around the town. I haven't adjusted much of this yet, but it's super accessible.
  • You can quickly multi-plant/harvest crops by just holding A. Your character will move along the plots and plant/gather them as long as they're all touching. You can also multi-harvest random plant spawns (herbs, flowers) around town that are next to each other.
  • There's depth to the characters, and to the purpose of your time in Dreamlight Valley. Your character has a level, but you also have friendship levels with the various characters around the Valley. The conversations with them are actually pretty interesting and not repetitive.
  • Tons and tons and tons of customization options in the character creator and within the main game itself. The character creator actually has skin options with vitiligo, which is super cool and inclusive. Tons of hair/feature choices as well. You can edit your character at any time from the wardrobe.

I meant to jot some stuff down over the past couple of days since I picked up the game, but these are most of the main ones. Really impressed with this and glad that I picked it up.

5 minutes in, I get it. It really is them. I thought this was Animal Crossing but seeing the battle pass I can guess this is more Farmville in 3D, hmm...

This isn't bad in its Early Access state, but has some core design decisions that very quickly got annoying. The one I dislike most is an energy meter that quickly depletes while doing anything, and needs to be recovered by eating or going back to your house. A lot of basic actions generate loot / resources to collect that go flying off a few feet in a random direction, sometimes even over a fence or something, so collecting it all is a hassle. The general movement and camera controls also feel awkward — I think behind-the-back third-person view with totally free movement was not quite the right choice for an Animal Crossing/Stardew Valley-like game. Other things like a slightly choppy framerate and some annoying menu / interface / inventory stuff could be polished up over time, but I am not expecting it to get to a point where I'll actually get into it. Definitely expect to go through quite a bit of work and some rough edges to get to the Disney magic in this game.
