i think it's hilarious that basically the first time we see seymour we've seen like, i dunno, two aeons and maybe at most two summoners. each is rocking ifrit or valefor, maybe ixion?, and they're both impressive but basically lovely beasts, and seymour shows up,

after i recently replayed much of ff7 on the switch, i decided to return to my ps4's copy of this remaster and realized part of what i found so endearing about returning to ff7 was that i really liked it as a handheld experience, similar to picking up a trashy paperback, and that flavor of experience did not really translate in the same way when i fired up my ps4 to play on my living room tv (to be fair, maybe i should have tried remote play on ios, but i didn't want to deal with latency issues).
this is my third time revisiting this game, the first time was on ps3 where i dutifully made my way to luca and lost interest. i picked it up on my ps4 and i was more hooked, again getting all the way to luca, but made the mistake of diving head-first into the advanced sphere grid and by the time i returned to a savefile, i had forgotten much of the story and much of what made ffx interesting. picking it up for the switch ended up being the trick for me. it's a fantastic port/remaster, but i would have liked the ability to turn off random encounters from the ff7 port.
weirdly enough, i think the hd has killed some of the contrast in the original. I find myself occasionally missing things, or not seeing some npc i'm supposed to talk to. beyond that i'm sort of in awe at how much i missed when i first played it and how much i am totally spacing out with this time around (like the jecht shot opportunity early on 🤦🏻♂️).
a fun replay, would be nice if it were easier to get back to the title screen, but it's amazing how much this game has stuck with me.

I own FFX/X-2 on PS2, PS3, PS4, and Vita. I have the Collectors and Limited Editions on PS3, standard on Vita, and the Limited Edition on PS4.
I've played through X at least 5 times, but have only completed X-2 once (with a second playthrough nearly completed before I ended up starting up some other games).

FFX is my favorite game of all time, so I have no shame.

Here's how I feel in a nutshell about both of these games' minigames.

Using the expert sphere grid and taking detour through the paths really spices up character building. My only problem with the system is that it might be in the wrong FF, or maybe wrong RPG series altogether. In between the cutscenes, set pieces and the slow "leveling" speed, I find that the Sphere grid moves too slowly.
Like only after every 5 levels do I feel like I made any progress. Couple that with the fact that you will need to backtrack (for a reduce level cost) and it makes it so that, a lot of times, leveling seems like it's taking me nowhere for a while. In an RPG with a lot more fighting and grinding, this system would shine... We'll see, I'm still at the beginning.

Playing FFX brings back amazing memories. When ai first played it I didn't understand much of what was going on or could even appreciate the world that had been created by Square... Now I'm all the way to Besaid Island and the world, the look, the sounds. Everything is so nostalgic.
I'm glad to be back.

X is fantastic, the only FF I have ever completed. Completely overblown, terrible minigames, and awful chores which I skipped to get the ultimate weapons. Everything else is awesome though, I especially love how you slowly learn the language as the game goes on.
I haven't played X-2 but it looks great in a completely different way.

Playing through this gem with the boyfriend. Our first adventure together! Once he gets home from work, We will beat Sin for the last time, and he will finally see the tearjerker ending! Which he won't find sad because he isn't a sap like me. Sad face. Great journey though :) Then onto X-2!
