My reasons being, the first game (probably cause its gen 2 so not much competition lol) game with 2 full regions! Kanto did feel a little flat in some aspects which was unfortunate but this was a ton of content for a GAMEBOY Game. 16 Badges, Elite four gets stronger, and the best part, mt silver with RED at the top! When you finally found red especially as a kid it was crazy, he is essentially your player character from gen 1, so it's almost like fighting a mirrored version of yourself! Compared to games like Emerald or some others i don't think this one holds up aswell, but man these games were fantastic!

Played both Gold and Silver found them enjoyable however the level curve past gym 4 is a little questionable given the technical ‘non linear’ story progression from this point.

My favorite Pokemon game of all time. It took everything that made Red and Blue great, and upped the ante.

I love heartgold but the old gameboy color charm is unbeatable, Johto's my favorite region by far and i feel like it has the most endearing pokemon designs.

4.5 out of 5, a golden experience wink wink nudge nudge

Fun when I was a kid. Not as much now. I prefer the remakes though.

First Pokemon game I actually owned.
First time I put 100+ hours into a game.
First time I learned that siblings are God's way of punishing us as my younger sister stole my game and erased my save when I was at school.
I do not forget. I do not forgive.

I sunk hundreds of hours into this bad boy, collecting every Berry every day, battling the special trainers and raising my team of legendary pokémon to Level 100. If I'd known about EV training and the nuances of breeding, I probably would have engineered the perfect team, but alas those were the days before the internet in my household.

It's no mystery that Pokemon as a series was seen to reach its pinnacle around this point. Generational opinions aside, this came at a time while Pokemon catching was still fresh and in a feat of mechanical wonder, twice the amount of content of the original and color graphics was packed into an itty bitty cartridge. Problem is, if the original Red/Blue was still relatively grindy and didn't encourage fleshing out a team of Pokemon, this one pretty much does the same thing but with More Pokemon!
Starting out on an adventure in the Johto region, you make your way through the similar adventure of catching and training Pokemon. Pokemon can now hold items to use in battle, events and Pokemon can be determined by a real-time clock, and there are small asides to legendaries and the strange Unown. The color graphics are more pleasing to the eye, but the screech of the soundtrack is surprisingly unpleasant. I don't know if it's just rose-colored hearing aids, but the GB rendition of these tunes does not age well.
Mechanically speaking, there are more Pokemon and thus should be more strategies, including the Dark and Steel types. However, there's just not a lot you can do to avoid mindlessly grinding unless you want to take a relatively strong Pokemon and brute-force the entire game. Me and my Level 85 Typhlosion can attest to that. Granted, there's always a harder way to play the game based on self-restricting tendencies, but I just wanted to feel like there was more stimulus to catch and evolve em' all instead of losing my mind in determined power-leveling in grass.
And...that's it. Gold/Silver plays off of the nostalgia of the first game but can't really escape what it is at its core - a system that comes off as a bit grindy and with narrow focus, but at least the creatures are varied and adorable. Hell, if we went off of technical feats alone, this baby would get 5/5, but for the shining boy of the Pokemon series, it only has nostalgia and a breezy playthrough going for it.

I recently took the time to replay Pokémon Silver. The game still has all it's magic. It's truly a classic and didn't even need those remakes that were made for the Nintendo DS a while back.

The pacing is very nice, graphics are top notch for the Gameboy Color (it still looks beautiful even for today standards on retro stuff), music is the best you can find on any 8-bit device and the story twist at the end of the Pokémon League with the whole Kanto territory to explore after is something I never found anywhere after Gold/Silver/Crystal.
