Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020)

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales swings into familiar territory with a story that takes time to find its footing. The narrative starts off sluggish, but by the end, it successfully creates compelling bonds between Miles and the most important people in his life like Phin, Ganke, his Uncle, and family. These relationships added emotional weight and depth that made the finale particularly impactful.

I could have done without the repeated assertion that “he’s our Spider-Man.” It sometimes feels unnecessary and forced, almost as if the creators wanted to make their political point completely obvious to gamers. It's sad, because true heroism transcends political and social affiliations.

On the gameplay front, Insomniac has played it safe. The mechanics are very similar to Insomniac’s original Spider-Man game, which is both a strength and a slight letdown. The familiarity brings a comforting sense of continuity, but it also means there’s little innovation. Those hoping for any significant improvement may find the familiar web-swinging and combat systems a bit too comfortable.

Overall, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a game worth playing, particularly for fans of the genre. The story may take some time to hit its stride, but it delivers a gratifying Spider-Man experience once it does.

Upon completing the game, I was shocked. The credits for this game are excellent. They are even superior than most known movies and games. Despite their simplicity, by only showing characters in static poses, they summarize the main story in a short, non-verbal way. All of this is accompanied by an amazing credit song that suits the atmosphere of the game perfectly.

Couldn’t get into the original Marvel’s Spider-Man game even after a few hours of playing. After watching the latest Spider-Man animated feature Across the Spider-verse, I decided to give Miles Morales a chance. The story is immediately much more engaging. I like Miles’ back story, it’s more refreshing, perhaps because I know Peter Parker’s story too well. I still find the combat controls difficult and I have hand cramps every time I played more than 30 minutes. But I managed to get over that and enjoyed the combat. The venom attacks are so cool and satisfying.

This game is shorter than the original but I think that is a pro not a con, especially because its free as it’s available in the PS Plus Extra catalog. I beat the game in just 10 days which is super fast for me having a family and a busy job. Now I am super pumped for the new Spider-Man 2 game releasing later this year!

If you loved Spider-Man I don't see any reason that you won't love this iteration. It just Builds on what we got in the Base Game as well as letting us get to know Miles Better.

I wouldn't say its better than the base game, but it is definitely very close. If you have any Plans to play Spidey 2 when it drops later this year I think you should for sure give this one a shot. Then endgame cutscenes deff seem important for the sequel and in general it was a fun ride.

Insomniac really have the superhero genre figured out like no one else. The pacing of the story in this game perfectly replicates the beginning, middle and end of your typical comic trade, and the brevity of the game itself helps you stay in it the whole time. At no point do the personal stakes of the story fall apart because oh actually we need to fill 2 hours of you fighting a bunch of other villains instead. It has a focus and it nails it.

I had way more fun with the venom powers and the side activities than I did in Spider-Man PS4, but I do still think the game can be a little annoying with the amount of crimes and stuff popping up when I'm really just trying to do other stuff. But hey, thematically, you can't say it doesn't fit!

The RPG/Skill-Tree stuff unfortunately is all still really bad. Gadget upgrades are extremely boring, the suit powers are mostly boring, the actual skill tree itself, really boring. Didn't care for any of this! I ended up just banking huge amount of resources and skill points at a time because there was nothing in those menus that actually affected the game at all. At least there's no loot, but honestly just get this out of there. I don't need to think about my Spider-Build just give me crackdown upgrades or something this is silly.

Genuinely can't wait for Spider-Man 2 just because of how much I love what Insomniac does with these casts of characters and how well they do their setpieces. It's a certified good time!

THE GOOD

• More Spider-Man!
• Controls are great and responsive
• Combat still works really well (I love sticking bad guys to the walls)
• The story, although short, does a good job of setting up the environment, characters and it makes you care for both
• Representation with (more) black/latinx culture and a deaf character. Variety is a good thing
• Difficulty settings and choice on whether to complete all challenges make it accessible for players of most skill levels
• This game sets up nicely for a full-blown follow-up game
• Cats!

THE BAD

• Short game
• It would've been nice to see some other villains
• Venom powers are not as important (or necessary) as I'd hoped
• Repetition in the crimes and how they are resolved is a bit of a shame, but something that was also present in Spider-Man

So this is essentially the same as Spider-Man with some improvements on what was already an outstanding game:

• Graphics are even more stunning
• The addition of Venom makes the combat system more interesting and varied
• The skill tree is more focussed
• Bosses are more interesting
• Final mission is fantastic

The only downside is that it is very short, but that is a pretty significant downside. I guess it's just a stepping stone to the recently announced Spider-Man 2 - some DLC would be welcome to fill it out.

Very fun! I never really had too many issues with the first game, aside from the obvious repetitiveness of it, but it's just so fun, and this installment just highlighted that. Yes, it gets repetitive, but it's a visually beautiful game, with smooth graphics and movement that's probably going to look old school in a decade or so, but for right now? These Insomniac Spider-Man games are absolutely stunning (and have I mentioned, fun?).

The story also made me feel thingsss and I couldn't have asked for more. I probably would have been able to write more about it if I'd written this review right after playing it, but basically, this game just added to my existing love for Miles Morales, and this made the MCU's Tinkerer look dull lol.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a very good game. It doesn't exactly offer anything revolutionary or new in comparison to the original game, instead it keeps everything as it's and just adds some tweaks and improvements, which, for a spin off, is a nice thing to do. However for sure part 2 of this franchise will need to go even bigger to prevent things from staying still.

Story is decent, but nothing spectacular. This is a pretty much standard Spider-Man comic book story, in which most of the twists and events are honestly obvious miles away. There's nothing groundbreaking here. It's just a fun Spider-Man story that you can enjoy then completely forget later on. It does the job, and fleshes Miles' character a little bit more, but nothing else.

The gameplay is basically more of the same from the original Spider-Man game. Combat and swinging are still as good as ever. Movement is smooth, and swinging never ceases being fun to the point I didn't use the fast travel option that much, just like the main game, and the combat is immensely satisfying and very fluid. Combos on the ground and is air uses Spider-Man's full acrobatic abilities and combos are just a lot of fun to pull out especially when launching enemies in air.

The game adds some improvements and new tweaks to the combat and stealth thanks to Miles' different abilities in comparison to Peter Parker. Venom abilities were a nice addition to the combat flow, with various abilities ranging from just punching enemies harder, to breaking their guard, to straight up ramming them. Going invisible, an ability that shouldn't be new to anyone who watched Into The Spider Verse movie, added a different layout in stealth and being able to hide again after getting caught. All these aren't really groundbreaking additions but they make the combat and stealth more varied, and more Miles a little bit different from Peter and has his own unique style.

Open World plays mostly similar to the main game, which was honestly a little bit outdated. The map is full of collectibles icons to gather, outposts to tackle, challenges to do, and other generic open world stuff. There're few side missions which offered some fun environments to explore, and random crime events are always fun to tackle while you're on your way to a mission, giving you the sense of being a real super hero. However, I hope in the next game Insomniac improve their open world design a little bit and try to stay away from this generic stuff. It's time for them to take a bigger step forward in their open world design.

Graphics are similar to the original game on PS4. Didn't try the game on PS5 as I don't have it yet, but on PS4 it looks nearly the same, which is of course very good, and I bet it looks much better on next gen console. Voice actors did a good job, and some of the songs played were really cool, reminded of some songs from Into The Spider Verse movie.

If you like the main game, there's no doubt you'll like this one, considering that it's basically more of the same with just few new additions to give Miles his own unique fighting style. Otherwise, it's mostly the same game. This is very good for a spin off game, and this one serves this role pretty fine. The story is about 6 hours but you can get a solid 10 hours of it if you do all the side missions and track the collectibles (some offer some good insight on Miles' family and often reward you with a pretty cool new suit to play with). For 30-40 dollars, anyone who liked the main game should check it out.

I hope though, that Insomniac take more steps forward in next game. The teasing for the story of part 2 offered in the original game and then this one is really exciting, and it seems they'll keep on going an original route just like what they did with the first game. A less generic open world in next game will be a welcome addition to the already strong combat and swinging design.

As much as I really, really loved Insomniac's first Spider-Man adventure, I think I love Miles Morales even more. While this entry is smaller, it's also more cohesive: There aren't any sequences this time around that felt bothersome or out of place to me. Miles' new powers are a welcome addition: They made me feel more confident in combat and in stealth predator segments, the latter standing comfortably toe to toe with my beloved Arkham trilogy given this addition.

If I had to nitpick, I'd say it's a shame that the distinctive and striking visual style of Into the Spider-Verse is limited to just an unlockable. In general, I wish game studios like Insomniac, Rocksteady and Square Enix drew more inspiration from the look of the comics and less from the pursuit of fidelity or realism. But I'm really digging for that critique... Miles Morales is an amazing game I've already started replaying.

The original Spider-Man on PS4 was a great game, and one of the few games I took the time to Platinum.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PS5 plays almost identically to that previous installment. The story is great, the graphics are great (the raytracing 60fps mode is especially nice), and the music gives this game a bit of its own identity.

The Venom abilities don't quite stand up to the original game's special abilities, however. Also, more canonical (and non-recycled from the previous game) Marvel villains would've been nice. I also wish it leaned into the PS5 DualSense haptic feedback some more.

Overall, a great game, and was worth my time to rack up another Platinum. I just wish it expanded on the previous game's formula a bit more.

Wow! Wow! Wow!

This is my first ps5 game I played. The gameplay is fantastic with combat, stealth and even swinging around the city. The game is gorgeous. I played the game in performance mode which is 4K, 60 frames then the update came out a few days ago which had performance rt mode which is 1080p, 60 FPS, and ray tracing. The story was engaging and done right.

This has been a very emotional ride for me playing this game. Black and Latino people are really not represented in video games. However, this game capture that fantastically. At the very end, I cried...as an African American there’s not a lot of things we can call our own. But I’m proud to say “That’s Our Spider-Man”.
