I missed Alan Wake the first time around even though I had always wanted to play it, so when the remastered version was released I was excited to give it a try. I’m a big fan of Stephen King novels and Alan Wake is clearly inspired by the kind of stuff he writes (the game even mentions King). The story is an intriguing horror concept and it is the highpoint of the game. Where the game struggles is in the combat and long episodes. The combat is tense at times but essentially repetitive while the episodes felt long at times so that I was most excited for the episode to be over so I could see how the story played out. Alan Wake isn’t perfect, but I have to give it points for an original and story driven concept.

"writer's blockista".

Alan Wake was a bit of a mess, its originally planned to be open world now chopped into areas put together in a linear fashion, back in a time where the word "linear" was worse than the worst sin, for some reason.

Things have changed. Linear is fine now and the game manages to keep the pace going like a champ, I had more fun with any 10 minutes of AW than in the entirety of Control. There are no repeatable sidequests, no skill points, no loot, no weapon mods, no superfluous time extending garbage. It has its focus, it does what it sets out to and then it ends... Mostly, poor Remedy couldn't catch a break back then and the sequel plans went to shit.

Until 2023 of course! I'll be playing Alan Wake 2 soon, and my deep dislike of both Quantum Break and Control makes me a bit afraid that it's not gonna click for me, but I'm too deep into the dark place to stop at this point. I watched the surprisingly engaging bright falls miniseries on youtube, and even found the couple comics out there... It doesn't fully make sense with what Control is, granted many years and changes would pass, but you can see the seed of it here and there.

I guess my main worries is that they fall back into limitations... When you make a modern shooter, it's hard to have any game verbs that get away from "Shoot".

"This is not a gun, it is a tool in a logical process of elimination."

But with all the cheese, it was a fun adventure. I thought they set a mildly unsettling tone throughout but again, far from scary. Enemy designs were kind of bland and didn't help the scare factor any. Game controls are simple and offer no hassle gameplay.

With that being said, I felt the game offered too much guidance and presents little challenge. This game succeeds most in keeping players involved and never bored, there is always something to keep your attention. (I think the soundtrack was a big part of that.)

With its simplistic gamestyle and shortish story, the replay value here dwindles quickly, so enjoy while you can!

Thriller Avvincente

Voto: 8.5/10

It certainly is a bold decision to make the forward button actually make you go slightly towards the left. Not a good decision, but a bold one.

The unique and effective take on horror gameplay juxtaposed with gorgeous scenery sets Alan Wake to be something special, but the promising storyline ultimately disappoints.

The concept of a horror writer trapped in his own story is absolutely brilliant, and the way the manuscript pages foretell events or provide insight into the thoughts of other characters immersed me into the story. However, the quality of the gameplay doesn't match up with the quality of the story; while there are plenty of unique puzzles and battles to conquer, the majority of the game consists of merely shining a light on enemies and then shooting them. While removing the darkness from enemies is immensely satisfying, combat got repetitive quickly, and there were some points where I would just run past enemies to reach my next destination.

If the game's plot intrigues you, I'd recommend it; that is, if you can still find a copy of it.

I've played this before but having recently bought it, I decided to replay it because I remember it being really good. After having played it a second time I still think it is pretty great and creative with its ideas, but now I can see some of the problems with it. Like with the enemies and enemy encounters. They become annoyingly similar. After an hour or so of play time, theres no new enemy types, so that can be a bit repetitive. The same can be said with the areas you go through, you've seen one part of the forest and you've seen them all. But I still think its a good game. The mystery involving the town is definitely intriguing, and with the music and atmospheric elements crafted expertly, it really add something special. And lastly, the story keeps you interested throughout with a cliffhanger that really demands some pondering afterword. Its just a shame that we will probably never get to see a sequel to get some more clear answers. Anyway great game, I recommend it to anyone who wants something creative and new.
