With more than 10 hours of playtime, Alan Wake takes too long in telling a story. It's not that the story is uninteresting, but the gameplay is too repetitive to keep you engrossed. There's one main mechanic to fights, and that's it - it doesn't evolve in any form whatsoever during those 10+ hours. Environments also remain mostly same throughout. You can't help but appreciate the ambience when you enter the woods for the first time - quiet spaces, shadows moving around, wind blowing through the trees, and the slow creeping in of enemies. It loses its charm when you see the same thing back-to-back for several hours.
As several folks have mentioned, the DLC feels better than the base game. It addresses the above issues by introducing new mechanics, telling a cohesive story, and wrapping everything up in about three hours.
Personal note: After backing myself into a corner during one chapter, I decided to use cheats for the rest of the story. Unlimited ammunition took the edge off of combat, but I'm not sure I would have made it to the end of the game without this enabled.
