Cuphead is a run-and-gun action game focused primarily on boss battles. Its visual style is modeled after 1930s cartoons, using traditional hand-drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings. Players control Cuphead or Mugman in single-player or local co-op, traversing themed worlds, acquiring new weapons, and unlocking super moves. The game includes both boss encounters and side-scrolling platforming stages.

Stoked to start this up. Absolutely love that it was released for Switch.

Woah. Crazy to see the Switch news on this, especially with that "thanks to our friends at Microsoft" comment during the Direct.

Beat this over 3 days. The developers behind this are very promising, their art is obviously amazing and should be emulated, that goes without saying. But what's really promising to me is their level design and mechanics, while it is inferior to the top Japanese run n gun games, they actually have talent and an understanding of the genre, I don't know of any other Western devs in the past decade whom I can say the same of. There's real potential here and hopefully, it will mature. I really hope their games improve so they play as good as they look, than we'd have a real masterpiece.

As it stands now their boss fights have are prone to random moments of chaos. The run n gun stages have too many sections that reward screen-inching or outright stopping and little variety in terms of how to tackle any given section. The shmup levels do not focus enough on prescise micro-movement and too much on 'find the safe-spot'. And all of it is wrapped up in a crappy infinite-lives checkpoint system.

Style is substance, the medium is the message, and so on. Cuphead is a deliberate throwback in both animation style recalling the adult allure of the caricature Looney Tunes Cartoon Network would play late at night and the run 'n gun gameplay of Contra.

Because the animation is so intricate the level design is straightforward - but this benefits Cuphead instead of detracting. I never felt lost bouncing between bullets or using the small collection of powerups. The boss arenas with their multiple phases and creative use of background / foreground obstacles as hints and hindrances are the best parts of Cuphead with my personal favorite being the rat boss battle. The animation never rises above aesthetic emulation to a larger point but is great to watch and makes for fantastic third-party viewing (my wife loved watching me play).

Damn good fun in a damn good style that's not much deeper than that but doesn't try to be.

I played this game and expected a semi-hard game that would give me a challenge, instead it reached deep down into the deepest depths of my soul, and drove every piece of anger and hate I had in me to the surface. I would definitely suggest this game to any age because of its cute and innocent art style that doesn't ever insinuate anything bad, But I would definitely give the warning that it is a very aggravating game, and if your not a hardcore bullet hell shooter type of gamer, it might not be for you.

This game is a sin. Beat it a few days ago. Don't want to play it again. The OST is hella fun though, and some bosses are just so fun. My favorite boss is the dragon, though it took me about 30 lives or more to beat it.

A top tier game, and a wonderful callback to the Sega Genesis platforming run and gun era. Gunstar Heroes oozes through every moment of this game (dice world, amirite?).

The music, art, and game feel are exceptional. Every moment and sensation intentional and wonderful. More than worth the wait.

While I'd love to say this is a game everyone should experience, I worry the difficulty will prevent some from enjoying everything Cuphead has to offer. It's not a knock for me, but I would understand someone not giving the game its due diligence.

An instant modern classic.

Some guy gave me his save so that I don't have to start from scratch. The game needs to patch this bug quick, I have backup saves but geez. Never had to do this shit for a console game.

OH YEAH! Just beat that Sunflower boss. It's so fulfilling to beat a boss here and get their contract. Man, your hand-eye coordination skills should be lit in this one!
