I wish I liked its visual aesthetic and story more, but Vanquish is probably the most fun I've ever had with third-person shooter gameplay. Its relatively no-nonsense focus on pure action is the exact kind of thing I've been looking for lately, a fun, challenging, and concise campaign that rarely lets off the gas pedal.

I got a suggestion to start out on Hard difficulty, which I'd almost never do usually, and I'm glad I gave it a shot. The challenge suddenly escalates a lot in the last two acts, resulting in a lot of deaths for me, but the game is pretty generous with checkpoints and gives you plenty of second chances with its bullet time mechanic automatically activating when you take a bunch of damage.

The game shines when you can boost slide your way right up into enemies' faces, as you can do various things to stun and get around them to clear each level efficiently with some planning. That said, it is very much playable in a more cautious style, with cover everywhere. Later, this is punished a lot more, so you can end up with a pretty balanced way of playing just by trying to get through the game naturally.

While the moment-to-moment action feels great, a few sections that slow down the pace through walk-and-talk dialogue or forced vehicle sections are not quite as exciting. Luckily these are rare, and the game largely keeps moving forward and doesn't outstay its welcome. I did about an act per day and found it was almost always fun while not being too exhausting.

Compared to some of Platinum's best games like Bayonetta, this is a bit lacking in terms of visual style and fun cutscenes. There's mildly funny dialogue occasionally, and the visuals get the job done, but I do think "personality" is the game's weakest point. That's far from a fatal flaw, though, as style does shine through in the gameplay and encounter design. This is totally worth a look for anyone who skipped it or may have only briefly messed with it in the past like myself—glad I tried it again.

Vanquish is an over the top, silly, action packed, Sci-Fi, third person shooter, directed by Shinji Mikami, that seems like a response to the stop and pop, waist high cover based, third person shooters of it’s time. So it should be an absolute winner and the type of game I’m going to love and it mostly is. However, Vanquish is a bit underwhelming in some ways and has a few flaws too that keep it from being everything it could be.

Vanquish is somewhat comparable to those lovable 80s and early 90s American action films and it is also a very videogame-y videogame. But for something with this kind of vibe it can be unexpectedly bland. Where’s the personality, the charm, the charisma, the style, the camp? Okay maybe I’ve started off a little too harsh here. It does have its charm and is a bit cool. It is likable and excessive. I like the characters and the way they talk. I like that the main character, Sam, smokes as much as he can and it’s used in gameplay too. The game isn’t really short on crazy moments; it opens with San Francisco getting micro waved from space. There’s one instant when Sam say’s ‘this is like a videogame’ and the tutorial includes a bit about how you can’t jump in just because you’ve read the manual. It’s got something and is fun, but after Resident Evil 4, God Hand and Platinum’s other game Bayonetta this just doesn’t compare and it feels a little bit more flat than it should be.

This can be seen in the games visuals that are a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand I think Sam’s Augmented Reaction Suit looks great and so does the BLADE system, which is a transforming weapon that can change into three different currently ‘held’ weapons. Sam looks awesome in motion too. Boosting around, flying out cover and how he melee attacks was really well done. Slow motion is excellent looking as well and I need to give a special mention to the grenade throws. The fantastic animation is helped by good sound effects too. I think the robot enemies look pretty good and some of the characters like the villain, Victor, the Lieutenant Colonel Robert Burns, who you often fight alongside, and your assisting character, Elena, get good enough character designs. Along the way you’ll see some nice views and a real highlight of the game is that it is set in what is essentially a cylinder floating in space, so when you look off in the distance the environments curve up and go above you. There are some really cool action sequences in cut scenes and the action during gameplay is the right kind of visually hectic. Vanquish has nailed the most important visual aspects for a game like this and the performance too.

On the other hand this world and the levels can be kind of uninspired. The places you move through are forgettable and blur into each other in your mind at least up until act 3, or maybe act 4 in particular, but this is only a 5 act long game. There’s a lot of bland looking space marine dudes running about and just a lot of ‘okay’ looking stuff. Plenty of the cut scenes have over the top action which is great but the way it is framed often isn’t. The camera likes to move a lot, often having that shaky hand held technique and there are times with lots of quick cuts and zooms. I know what they were going for but I don’t like it, I prefer to see action clearly, in all its glory. I guess they were maybe inspired by Hollywood at the time, in that post Jason Bourne, Transformers era. I wasn’t a fan and think later scenes in the game that focus on Sam in action work better. There is some level of deliberately being bad going in this game as it is aiming for a dumb American action movie, mixed with a Japanese developer’s style, kind of aesthetic and mood. Perhaps there’s a reason why this is focused on what truly counts in a game like this though.

Vanquish is about some Russian bad guys taking over a giant American space cylinder colony, that has a giant microwave gun on it. The Russians use it to wipe out San Francisco and then threaten New York next. America doesn’t surrender, they send in space marines and Sam from DARPA also gets sent in, with his fancy battle suit, and a special mission to rescue a Doctor. It’s simple, a bit of fun and gives you reasons to do a whole lot of shooting. Unfortunately though it’s not very good or interesting or fleshed out, even if there are some bits of info dropped in loading screens, and you’ll probably figure out the reveals/twists before they come. The characters are definitely action game/movie characters but they are fun to watch. I particularly liked the dialogue and dynamic between Sam and Burns. There are some well known voice actors here like Gideon Emery, Steve Blum and Kari Wahlgren and they deliver lines just as you’d want them to for a game like this. The music is fine too but not much stood out to me. The game ends really abruptly and feels like there should have been another hour or two or more likely a sequel that we never got. It’s quite a short game and feels short, with the last two acts in a five act game going by much quicker than the previous three acts. Overall I just don’t have much interest in re-watching the cut scenes or going through the non gameplay moments of this game again. Maybe there is a reason, beyond just time and budget constraints, for this purity, simplicity, focus and short run time. Maybe everything is done (or not done) to service the gameplay; the fun, fast paced, action packed, very re-playable, reason that you’re actually here, gameplay.

Vanquish is a third person cover shooter that doesn’t want you in cover playing it like a cover shooter. It’s about speed and movement and what happens when you’re not in cover. If you play this game like a normal cover shooter you will probably come away from the game feeling dissatisfied and I’m not even sure if this would be that viable on harder difficulties, so get out of cover and get into it (not that I’m saying you should always be out of cover). You have a boost knee slide to rocket around the battlefield, to flank or get behind enemies. You have a dodge roll and you can use it as much as you need. There’s a good variety of weapons at your disposal and it’s enjoyable to mess around with all of them. The weapons upgrade in an interesting way too, that you need to learn to work with. They upgrade by picking up more of the same fully stocked weapon you have, and some random upgrade drops, but if you die the upgrades drop back down a bit. Added to this is the ability to heal injured Marines fighting along with you for more weapon drops. Sam can go into Augmented Reaction mode (slow mo) to kill multiple enemies quickly with accurate shots, to get in quick heavy amounts of damage, to shoot rockets out the air and to move around the bullets slowly ripping by. The slow mo also activates when you take a bunch of damage too so you have a chance to save your arse. You can do really cool melee attacks, that vary based on the weapon you have equipped, and do good damage but leave you vulnerable. Which leads to how energy is done in this game; the boost, slow mo, melee and health all share a pool. So you have to balance things while still being aggressive. Something else that needs a quick mention is how well Platinum usually does difficulty. Vanquish is both accessible and not short on challenge. You can choose the easier modes or normal depending on what you’re comfortable with and have fun. Then there is Hard, God Hard and challenges for the challenge seekers and those looking for depth will find it.

Vanquish works really well and the elements of its gameplay come together to create something special. Reading my brief description you can probably already guess this is about risk/reward. The joy of Vanquish comes from playing on the edge. The line between being an unstoppable force on the battlefield and dying or being forced to cower in cover is small. The other thing that is so enjoyable is learning to play and diving into these simple mechanics to discover the depth here. When you play Vanquish you should mess around with it, have fun and get creative. See what you can pull off and then try to link that stuff together so you can get into a very cool looking and feeling flow. It doesn’t matter if you die a lot for while and don’t let this stop, frustrate or worry you. Vanquish isn’t about just getting through it and seeing the story. It’s a videogame with a capital V. So get into it and ‘play.’ Leap over cover and trigger slow mo in the air and rain down bullets on the robots trying to hide. Boost dodge your way through the chaos. Throw a grenade into a pack off enemies but use slow mo to shoot your own grenade in the air when it’s right above them. Boost slide melee attack into an enemy and then trigger slow mo in the air off this and use the sniper rifle to hit an enemy in the distance that thought they were safe. Jump into cover when you need a reprieve and take a ciggy break then watch as Sam flicks the cigarette away which distracts the enemies, creating the perfect window to jump back into the glorious action. Experiment and see what can be done, then look up what others have found and add it to your arsenal. Simple, fun, brilliant, that’s Vanquish during combat.

Outside of combat there’s not a whole lot going on and I have to mention some negatives after all that gushing. It doesn’t have good downtime sections or anything else to break up the combat and maybe help with pacing. There are some gold statues to find and shoot. It has these little, unskippable forced walking and listening sections. Don’t worry though; they aren’t bad compared to other games and they are brief. Speaking of wasting time, you are often waiting for stuff like doors and what felt like a whole lot of elevators. When not in fights it really mostly just boils down to moving though linear spaces or waiting. Also a lot of stuff in the combat sections has been a bit tired for a long time now in both first and third person shooters; like being on a turret or getting through an area with a silenced sniper rifle but at least it’s trying to throw in some variation. I wish the rating system was a little clearer and better too. But again I must say this game is aiming for a pure simplicity.

This was my first time going back to Vanquish since I first played it around the time it launched on PS3. I have thoroughly enjoyed coming back to it and realised I should have done so sooner. Vanquish isn’t perfect and it might be a little underwhelming or undercooked. But its simplicity, focus and shortness are its strength too. It is so fun, highly re-playable and rewarding. Maybe Vanquish doesn’t need skill trees, unlockables, a more open or interesting world, or a good story because it is too busy just being kick arse. Vanquish is a must play action game and one that should be learned from, I highly recommend it.

Fast, frantic gameplay, beautiful HD graphics, intuitive and smooth controls, great music and SFX. The perfect old school/new school mashup. Although, it's a little short, and the cheesy dialogue/story may be on the negative side here. A larger focus on the game community (i.e. recording playthroughs, etc) would have been a nice touch. I guess it won’t appeal to casual gamers or those who are interested in engaging, story driven games.

I am beating 360 random Xbox 360 games because I love the system and its library. Here is my next adventure.

Game number 7 is Vanquish. Vanquish is a 3rd person cover shooter, much like Gears of War, by Platinum Games. There are combat challenges and a main story mode, but I only completed the story for this challenge (on normal).

The main gimmick in Vanquish is that you get jetpacks on your knees and you can zoom and slide all around the place at super fast speeds. I love this and probably utilized these jetpacks more than was necessary. I would zoom up to most enemies, shoot them, and zoom away. In addition to the knee jetpacks, you also get the ability to slow down time. This mechanic is extremely useful because some of the boss/miniboss enemies move around really fast or their weak spot is only shootable for a few seconds. It also lets you mow down the trash mobs without worrying about getting shot.

Guns all level up when you get upgrades and there is a decent selection to choose from. I would estimate that there are about 8ish guns in the game, which isn't too much but lets you upgrade the ones you really want to use. I always had an assault rifle and shotgun on me and my third gun changed according to the situation.

The story in this game isn't all that great. You are a DARPA operative and you are fighting on a space station against robots... but they aren't just robots, they're Russian robots. There is a sub-plot about a war between the US and Russia and some of the politics, but its kinda stupid. Let's be honest, nobody is playing Vanquish for the story.

The graphics are actually very good and I really like the design of the main character, Sam's, exo-suit. All the environments and levels are also enjoyable and I was thrilled to go through them. The sound is also pretty good, but the voice acting is horrendous. By this point in gaming, I thought all the really bad voice acting was past, but not here.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time playing Vanquish. The levels were all beautiful and the gameplay was fast and engaging. The only issue is that I found myself not caring at all about the story. I would recommend this game to anyone that likes shooting games. Its also pretty easy to get into because the story is only about 6 hours long. (4/5)

This game took me 5:47:01 to beat on normal

I have spent 84 hours and 57 min on the RoadTo360 challenge so far.

Vanquish by PlatinumGames is unapologetically a video game with a capital V. This speedy action-heavy third person shooter spits in the face of traditional “pop and shot” shooters popularized by Gears of War. The game trades off meticulous character development and sensible storytelling with an over-the-top experience filled with dumb machismo dialog, big robots and explosions every other minute. Vanquish is a one-note action shooter that is fairly short, but makes for an enjoyable holiday/weekend game that can be finished in a few sittings.

A rebellious Russian named Victor with his hordes of robots have taken over a solar microwave transmitter in space and used it to destroy San Francisco. Victor demands the President of the United States surrender to Russia or he will destroy New York City next. The President forcefully declines and sends in the Marines. Meanwhile, a DARPA agent named Sam who wears a futuristic robot suit named the Augmented Reaction Suit (ARS) is also apprehending Victor because he has kidnapped the scientist responsible for designing Sam’s suit. Sam has to work with the Marines since they both want to take down Victor.

The gameplay is undoubtedly different from a western shooter. In Vanquish, speed is the name of the game. Sam can zoom past enemies with rocket thrusters and flank enemies with an assortment of machine guns, energy weapons and grenades. Sam is vulnerable when stationary so constant mobility is crucial. He can activate a bullet-time effect to temporarily slow down time whilst boosting to land more accurate shots. The boosts are limited and can be overheated if used for too long. Fortunately Sam can always hide behind cover to wait for his suit to cool down. Outside of the act of pure shooting, Sam can upgrade his weapons by collecting power-ups and picking up the same weapon when its ammo is full. There are also turrets that can be manned and vehicles commandeered. The combat is always frenetic which makes for an exciting spectacle, but the game sorely needs more quiet moments for palate cleansers.

The storytelling is groan worthy and is best glazed over. Tragic scenes about human sacrifice come off as nonchalant and callous. The only two women in the game are given minor roles. Elena is eye candy that stands in front of virtual screens for the entire game. And Winters, the President of the United States, only has screen time at the beginning and end of the game.

Vanquish is a fast paced action shooter that brings a much needed dose of adrenaline to the “pop and shot” third person shooter genre. The game is stubbornly one-note, but doesn’t overstay its welcome. The story is bad, but that’s not the draw of Vanquish. In an era where most video games try to have intricate plots and world building, Vanquish reminds players that video games can just be mindless fun.

This game is one pulse pounding encounter after another, taking on waves of increasingly insane amounts of enemies. Pay no attention to the absurd story, and just enjoy it for the thrill ride that it is. It's very rare that you feel quite this powerful in a game, given the ability to slow down time and rocket boost all over the battlefield, and the game encourages you to really take risks and go balls-to-the-wall. The game is stunningly produced, with graphics and frame-rate never taking a hit, even when there is pure mayhem occurring on-screen. Special shout-outs to the incredibly silly and entertaining credits sequence.

An interesting game that takes the generic 3rd person cover shooter formula and kicks it into overdrive with some innovative ideas.

You play as Sam, A soldier who has been outfitted with a new experimental exosuit. While being quite weak in armour it allows you to boost-slide and zip around the battlefield. You can also go into a slo-mo time that allows you to take better shots and dodge incoming attacks. Your suit only has a limited amount of this boost energy and if you use it all up the suit will overheat and slow you down. This isn't that bad in the lower difficulties but in hard or above it's pretty much a guaranteed death sentence.

While for the most-part you can just play by sitting safely behind cover and taking shots at the enemy, the game encourages you to be on the move, sliding from cover to cover, flanking your enemies and getting behind them to attack their weak-spots. This quick gameplay is a lot of fun and becomes second nature pretty quickly.

Graphics look pretty good considering it was a PS3/360 game. the PC port is also excellent with added PC features.

The story is pretty bare-bones and it's mainly there just to push you from point A to point B. The voice acting is pretty cheesy as well but has a sort of goofy charm to it.

The game is also pretty short. I finished it in about 8.5 hours.

Overall it's an interesting idea for a game and I wish more devs would take inspiration from its mobility ideas. If you're a fan of fast-paced, 3rd-person shooters with high skill ceilings then I'd say give it a go. Probably wait for a sale though.

+Pretty good bossfights. Some QTE's but i thought they were well done and didnt feel like crap.
+Arena/wave styled challenge modes

-Most of the Boss fights arent unique.
-Game is a wee short
-Story and characters are awful
-Linear. Not open world. Not really dynamic in playstyle.
-Many of the unique weapon choices feel nerfed to the mainstay bullet hoses

While at a glance this looks like a potential bomb it plays decent, and fairly fun (though i argue nothing special). Aesthetically this reminded me of the first crysis and incorporates a bit of the feats from stuff since Max Payne's Bullet Time, F.E.A.R. Just Cause and other shootsy games where you can have some strange edge/dynamic involving player motion or time-flow. I dont have much XP in 'cover shooters' but it plays quite a bit differently from the original GoW in many ways. I also found this a lot more fun than GoW, as there is a lot of action minute to minute. you also arent forced to take cover and engage piecemeal but a l337 player can opt to bumrush and place shots with the bullet time jetsleddin' gimmick of the game
This games saving grace is how the story really doesnt matter and it does not rely on it beyond you get a gun are augmented and shoot at things. and you are in space. sort of. Yes. It's very generic all across the board in just about every respect but I found it worthwhile because it plays decently. The heavier half of three stars. 3.5ish

Some people have compared this to bulletstorm, I am curious about that game since playing this cause I like what this one went for. Also more curious to play Bayonetta now.

Interesting. I couldn't get past the intro training section. I just wasn't into it. This video makes me rethink my original assesment:

Thoughts so far: I’ve been really busy lately, so have only been able to play in short bursts. It’s an exhilarating game to play. So fast and fun that I don’t want it to end. The controls are a little touchy and the environments so far have been very repetitive. I don’t even know what is happening in the story. These are just minor quibbles for me. Zipping around the battlefield, melee-attacking bigass robots is so much damn fun. I have been on the fence regarding buying a Wii U, but knowing Platinum has several exclusives on it (hell, I still haven’t played Bayonetta) has convinced me that the purchase is inevitable.
