Currently playing through Persona 4 Golden, Finished Kanji's Dungeon

Note for me: Switch reviews must take into consideration your Switch Lite's Left Joystick not operating to full capacity, pressing up allows for normal movement but input calibration is not showing it to be a consistent L Stick Up movement.

I know it's mostly because it's a product of its time, but some of the writing is causing me physical pain.

Social Links have always been an horrible mechanic, but I'll admit, even I didn't see this game having one with some kind of magical wish-granting fox coming.

I started playing this back in late May but as I was focusing on cracking down on shorter games in my Steam backlog for a while after that I'm only just really getting the ball rolling on my playthrough now.

I really love that feeling of getting far enough into a JRPG where I'm excited to get back to my playthrough whenever I have free time. It usually takes a while because the genre is filled with long games and slow burns but not much compares to being hungry for more and more of a game and knowing there's probably a solid 30-40 hours of it to dig into still.

Does this really need another remake? The PS5, Switch 2, Series X|S and PC can all play the current version. The remake cycle feels like it's fully entered into its true and complete redundancy phase.

Persona 4 remake apparently in the works

Fused the final Persona and fought the super secret boss (don't wanna spoil). That fight can go to hell. But it's done and I've 100%-ed this game at last! Now to free 10 GB off my computer, hwa hwa hwa

I finally got the Hardcore Risette Fan achievement on Steam. It took forever! Now I just have to speed through the rest of the game, fuse the super Persona, and fight the New Game+ superboss for 100% completion. Yeeeees!

P4G is a solid game, but it has its shortcomings.

  1. The Life Sim component of the game is a bit overwhelming and even grindy. I enjoyed how your Social Links acted as a means to power up your party, but the way it forces you to maximize every part of your day just made a lot of this take too long. I did every combat chapter as quickly as possible, but it doesn't matter, you just wind up with 10-20 game days after where you have nothing to do but wake up, go to school, and hang out with your friends. I just put 61hrs into this game - I'd have happily had that be reduced by 8-10 and have this part of the game dialed down.

  2. There are a number of avenues available to power up your characters, but it's never really fully clear how to strategize this. You don't realize right away that weapons and armor aren't that important, it is never examined how to pursue upgrade items (gemstones), and the process of fusing new Personas is way too complex in the early game.

  3. This is a common problem with JRPGs, but you also just spend too long watching cutscenes and battle sequences.

All that said, P4G is still a good game and one that iid recommend to anyone who likes JRPGs. Just a few little criticisms that kept me from loving it.

Persona games require long breaks. Something about it is so exhausting but I just can't put my finger on it. Will come back to it in couple months once my fixation on all things Fallout calms down a little bit.

Everything else is just starting to feel like a grind. I'm either doing the school loop, where the biggest decision is whether to build a social link or work, or a dungeon slog through really repetitive hallways that are randomly generated in the least interesting sense. I want to stick it out just to see where the story goes, but the game just seems to overstay its welcome, forcing you to hang around long enough that the flaws start to peak out and gameplay elements that were fresh begin to feel stale. I don't get the super high reviews for this one.

I'm nearly 20 hours into Persona 4 Golden on the Steam Deck. It's my first Persona experience in general and I came into it completely blind, with zero expectations as I hadn't really read or watched any reviews. And wow, what a quirky, fun, interesting experience so far. My JRPG experience mostly consists of Final Fantasy (which begins to look very vanilla in retrospect), so Persona feels really out there to me with lots of new-to-me gameplay elements, a very anime style, odd music, etc... I love how the characters are fleshed out. I can see that the games handling of social issues will feel really dated, the game is 15+ years old but it probably felt a little cringy in its own day too. I'm privileged enough to be able to overlook these issues, write it off to the times, and keep enjoying the game for its other fun elements, but I can see how others may want to put this one down.

Overall a breath of fresh air so far but I don't really enjoy the dungeon slogs and I imagine that and other aspects may get tiring as I approach 50+ hours.

I’ve become a firm believer in just loading up an old save on most previously-abandoned games, rather than feeling obligated to start over from the beginning. It’s how I got through The Witcher 3, and that ended up being amazing. I’m doing it now with Persona 4, which I previously started then dropped 3 times, and am finally having a great time with the game. A quick skim through a summary of the parts I’d already played and I was all good. I’ve talked to several people who “don’t get the hype” with Breath of the Wild, and keep replaying through its slow opening hours and dropping it repeatedly—it’s an essential part of the game, but also the least interesting part. Some games start really slow, and hours spent replaying those openings that didn’t hook me originally are hours not spent on getting into the real meat of the game that everyone likes. This is just what works for me, and I wouldn’t do it for every single game, but it is something I suggest since I always see people struggling to get into bigger games that they’ve tried before.
