I wish this site had .5 stars because this is a 4.5 game for me. While the story and social links are gripping and engaging, some gameplay components feel dated. Sometimes the game just skips forward weeks at a time which can feel frustrating when trying to get something done. It also provides you with no warning or indication of when your freedom is taken away. Also, the true ending was a bit out of nowhere. The game's story is really strong aside from that, but for such a great story it felt a bit cheap for the true ending to feel that random. The characters are the biggest highlight with the whole main cast outside of Teddie being really well fleshed out and enjoyable characters. The game's age shows in a few places in the story with some borderline homophobia and perv jokes. Overall a great entry in this massive series and it made me want to try more of them. Not a perfect game, but it's 5 star rating is representative of this being a 4.5 leaning more towards a 5 than a 4.

Let's get this out of the way, P4G is NOT a well written story.

It has terrible pacing, it moves along at the pace of a slug on sedatives, and even besides that pacing the way the storylines are threaded together is weak and only makes true on its thematics rather than the character studies it teases, as those end up only two dimensional at best on the surface. Also the combat is decent at best.

That being said, other than the main story, I had a blast playing Persona 4 Golden. That 100% has to do with its enjoyable fluff and understanding of its main tone, "Joy", which Golden helps substantiate further. The dialogue between characters here goes from funny and endearing to incredibly engaging. For the most part, it doesn't take itself seriously at all, and it's all the better for it. The characters themselves are surprisingly well developed in their social links, which has always been the backbone to the nu-Persona games when the main story drags to a halt anyway.

That sounds contradictory that the main story has them two-dimensional where the side quests don't, and that requires a bit of explanation. The main story makes the characters face their inner selves but it's done in over the top black/white ways where they all quickly accept that this self is part of them with little fanfare. The social links, however, have them actively evaluate their own selves and seek improvement. It also helps that it ebbs fuck societal roles for each one, but isn't close minded as to say that you're wrong if you decide to go along a route society expects from you (i.e. Yukiko). This society deciding how everyone's perspective is skewed towards one the consensus created is in-of-itself interesting if somewhat poorly executed by the time the credits roll.

That's where P4's heart lies, in its personality, characters, and themes, rather than its story and sequence of events. It's great in that, and even goes as far as to rewrite the perspective of a lot of its shortcomings in so bad it's good ways. I mean, with how garbage Marie is, what other choice do you have? (8/10)

Persona 4 Golden - 7/10

LIKE

  • Extremely likable characters
  • Cohesion between social gamplay and dungeon gameplay
  • stylish music and visuals

DON'T LIKE

  • Way too long; doesn't respect my time
  • Dungeons can be a chore
  • Story resolution was a let down

Annoying anime teenager the video game.

I sank at least 4hrs into this and that was spent almost entirely engaging in inane high-school chatter. It may be a masterpiece if you can get past that BS and into the game proper but I'm not willing to put in that much time.

Not Bad

A good JRPG... if you're in the mood it's great... but certainly does eat up time. had to put it down.

I have made it through the 1st 1 month on the game calendar on normal difficulty. At level 27, and about to go through the 8th floor of the Steambath Dungeon. Not too much of a challenge yet, but the battles are just as fun as Persona 3.

I'm really down a hole with this Persona 4 thing. I've watched the first season of the anime, and am now part of the way through the second season. I've bought the original PS2 version, and a physical version of the Vita game just to make sure I always have a copy. I think I'm a little bit crazy...

I'll write a review later, but man this game was good. I played for just over 80 hours, got the true ending, and really enjoyed myself. If you've got a Vita, get this game.

I am finally in the last dungeon. I will be finishing this game tomorrow night, I swear.

Finished the optional, second to last dungeon. I liked the story that went along with it, but that dungeon really sucked. There were way too many battles, and they are hardly worth it. You don't get much experience, and every battle takes away your magic. It really ended up just being a grind.

I finished what I thought was the final dungeon tonight. Turns out, there's a couple more to go to see the rest of this story. I'm fascinated by what's going on, but at the same time, I really want to see the end of this thing.

Died while fighting part two of what I think is the final boss today, and it took me back kind of far. Wasn't too happy when that happened. All I really want to see is the end of this story at this point. Probably will just bust out a guide that tells me the easiest way to beat this guy.

If you're doubting whether it's worth it or not to put in the extra 15 hours for the True Ending - it is, trust me. If you care about the characters or the story at all it is so worth it.I highly suggest following a spoiler-free guide to get the True Ending, it's only 2 or 3 areas where you have to pick the right option to get access to it. I also suggest maxing Marie's social link.Final playtime is 81h 59m, and every minute was beyond worth it. What a game.

I crossed the 50 hour mark this weekend. This is the longest I've spent on a game since Demon's Souls I think. It's been a long time since a game has held my attention this long.

Literally adds about 30+ hours onto the game if you choose the correct options. I would highly suggest anyone to read a guide to get the true ending, or at least get the extended gameplay. You can read a guide without getting anything spoiled and it's definitely worth it. As long as you're not drained of the game already. I have to admit I am getting a bit drained now and I'm glad I'm on the final boss.
