This game had all the stuff for something I should have enjoyed more, but nah. I’m not sure if it was the pacing or the complete lack of a solid game play (honestly, it felt more like a game of "hope for the best"), but it was definitely clunky with the little gameplay there was. The controllers suck. And don’t even get me started on the choices. you could just eat cereal for breakfast, and it’d still end up being the same thing. I know this game has a lot of love behind it, but apparently, I missed the memo. I’ll admit though, the story is solid, and the actors did a fantastic job. Why I give it 3.5 Other than that.......yea
I enjoyed this game, but I found that the middle to near end parts of the story weren't as strong, though I did enjoy the ending moments as well. I found it unique and interesting that the story is presented in a fragmented manner, jumping from different times in Jodie's life, though now I am questioning whether the transitions were all solid. There were also some interesting filler moments, but I do wonder if they were necessary or if they just ended up padding the game a bit more.
The performances from the actors were very well done, particularly from the main characters. All delivered solid performances.
I would recommend it, if you do enjoy story games.
After enjoying Heavy Rain to some extent I had to try this one out just because it offered what looked like something different.
With yet another clichéd Hollywood script, Beyond Two Souls takes the same ingredients from Heavy Rain but adds in real life celebrity influences Ellen Page (Elliot Page) and Willem Dafoe, who both really don't add much to the experience.
The premise remains much the same, decision making mixed with QTE that effect story progression and direction there of. B2S did bring some different elements, such as your poltergeist partner that floats room to room, albeit, slowly....
The story begins rather interestingly but ultimately loses itself with its slow execution and lack of build up. Willem Dafoe has always been a favorite actor of mine, but even his appearances felt dragged out.
Just like with Quantic Dream's Heavy Rain, only one playthrough is tolerable unless you don't mind long dragged out scenes with Elliot Page's smug arrogant acting style with a severely underwhelming Willem Dafoe.
Voto: 6.5/10
ryan is justin timberlake with fetal alcohol syndrome. he is also unbelievably disrespectful for no reason. truly a pathetic excuse for a man.
It still looks amazing and the story is well told, I love how real the characters feel in their movements/animations. The controls however are quite frustrating and I often didn't understand what it was they wanted me to do or spent an unnecessary amount of time trying to get to specific spots/angles.
It does feel in general more linear than other story games, but you can affect a lot of small stuff around it though which is always fun.
I thought the length was about perfect for this kind of game, overall I really enjoyed the experience but I wasn't really blown away by it, which might also be because it came out quite a while ago. I'd say it is a good game to play between lengthier titles :)
I loved this game. Jodie is, for me at least, one of the most interesting and over-developed characters in a video game ever. Her story is so damn fun and at the same time many chapters are so sad and this is the only game I have really cried (I had one, two tears in the end of The Last of Us, but here I just lost it). I was so attached to the character and while the Navajo part was longer than it should, everything else was perfect. I played the whole thing and I loved how he used the storytelling and the back and forth and then I played it in chronological order and it still was incredible. Beyond: Two Souls might not be that much of a game to play, but the story is so brilliant and I just loved the hell out of this. Yeah certain parts are slower than others, but they all add to the story and it makes everything more realistic. It shows all the highs and lows of a human and all the problem she (or he) can go through. I found the storytelling so damn interesting and I just loved every …

disclaimer: i'm the first person to be a sucker for interactive stories with essentially no gameplay.
but the first issue with that format is that the only element you're left with is, as the name would indicate, the story. this game (as with any others quantic dream has made) does not have a story that would hold up to even the average game, much less one that positions it as its focus.
that said, the main issue with this game in my opinion, other than how its story falls apart under the slightest scrutiny, is its constant blatant racism, and its relentless dedication to misogyny and hating its main character. there's a not-so-fine line between "make a female protagonist go through shit because that's what protagonists do" and "try to see how much torture porn we can fit in an M-rated game", and Beyond runs right past it into "let's make one of the two romance options a man who abused …

i would've hoped quantic dream had learned anything from making heavy rain, but the only difference i can see is that they're more convinced they're doing everything perfectly than every before. you'd think ellen page wanting to sue them over breaking contract would have made them maybe reconsider anything they do but apparently not.
I just played through this game for the second time and I still love it. I adore story driven games such as these i.e. Until Dawn and Heavy Rain but the story line in this one is freaking amazing. It's creative and inspiring and the art is gorgeous. Super keen to see what else these guys release in the future.
I've been playing a lot of these games I like to call "TellTale-like," where the gameplay boils down to making choices and some QTEs. Beyond: Two Souls is a solid entry into the genre, although one with a stronger focus on QTE's.
QTEs are a weird thing. I mostly dislike them, owing to my general inability remember which buttons are which without looking down, but a few games have made good use of them. Here, the use is rampant, popping up in all sorts of sequences: fighting, running, climbing, ie, anything involving action. And rather than stick with a few well-worn buttons, be prepared to get full use of X, square, triangle, O, L1, L2, R1, R2, not to mention use of the controller's motion (flick it down to jump down, flick it up to jump up).Oh, and throw in random LS/RS stuff, too. This seriously taxed my controller skills in a way that serious video games like Witcher 3 never did.
Part of the problem with QTEs was me. But I also think a part of the problem was how they're utilized within the game. I didn't get the sense that there was much consistency in which button(s) would …

This seriously taxed my controller skills in a way that serious video games like Witcher 3 never did.
Part of the problem with QTEs was me. But I also think a part of the problem was how they're utilized within the game. I didn't get the sense that there was much consistency in which button(s) would be needed. Thus, every time a QTE popped, I had to interpret what was needed by what the screen displayed, not by what was happening. That feels counter-intuitive to me. And that was hampered by the visual symbol being the same circle, regardless of what button needed pressed. Often when a game uses QTEs (or is otherwise talking about buttons) they use different shapes to match the buttons. Circles for X, square, triangle, O. Something that looks like a slightly curved rectangle for L1/R1. Something that looks like a trigger for L2/R2. Etc. Helps to ID what button(s) need to be pressed. Less thought = quicker press time and more accuracy. Nothing like that here. It was all a circle, all needing to squint to see what button was expected.
Realizing midway through the game that the QTEs are mostly filler and don't really make a huge difference is both a bummer and a relief. It idiot-proofs the game from people like me who would die over, and over. But it also makes it feel like a lot of the game can be played on rails. I mean, there are some scenes where you have to pass the QTE sequence to advance (rock climbing comes to mind) because you'll fall if you don't succeed. But while the storyline has tension written into that moment, it's not really timed, so you can fall as often as you must before finally figuring out the switches between X, R2, L1, or whatever. (Controls in general are a bit of a mess--even the intuitive controls feel sluggish and in desperate need of some honing.)
While the QTEs were a source of frustration, the game itself is pretty fun. Intense, mind... but fun. We follow a girl--Jodie--who has another soul attached to her body. The soul is free-roaming (though tethered), and kind of has a mind of its own, but they have a connection. So much of the game features you guiding Jodie until she can't do something, then popping over to spirit-mode to roam around until you can interact with something. It, uh, reminds me a bit of the old Gamecube game Geist. (Except I never played more than an hour or two of Geist, so my memory might be drawing a comparison where none is deserved.)
The story is split into chapters, are told out of order (there is a chronological playthrough option, though that's not recommended until you've played the intended order at least once), and can broadly be split into three categories: Jodie as a child in an institute, Jodie working with/for the CIA, Jodie experiencing the world apart from the institute or CIA. This gives the story many environments to experience--a blessing since much of the puzzle-solving gameplay is pretty basic. But going a mansion to steal papers out of a safe? Trekking about a Navajo farm while on the lam? Dodging dogs in a rain forest? Skiing through a wintry town hiding a secret underwater lab? I mean, it's James Bond meets fucking Life is Strange. It doesn't always make sense, but it is fun.
For those who like the interactive storytelling, TellTale-like games, Beyond: Two Souls is a good experience. It comes with its share of frustrations, which drags it down from 4 stars to 3, but that's still solid. Makes it more of a "find it on sale" game rather than a "buy it when you can" game, though.
Quantic Dream really develops great interactive drama action-adventure video games! It's also a plus for involving renowned actors Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe, it made the acting more appreciable.
GAME PLOT
The way the story has been told was very unique, as it was narrated in a remix order (although you can play it chronologically, but I think it was better to play it in this order). You're going to wonder how and what has had happened, or what could be happening in the next chapters. That feeling was great! It made me not want to stop playing because of curiosity. It's nice of Quantic Dream to also show a percentage of the path the gamers have chosen throughout the end of the chapter. It gives me the impression if I have played the game the same way as the others, or if I have made a unique game plot for myself.
Overall, the story and script were very well written that I was able to sympathize with the main characters. This allowed me to play the game with regards to their perspective. It was like "If I were in Jodie/Aiden's position, this is what I would do". Great …

GAMEPLAY
Just like Heavy Rain, your game progress depends on the choices and the actions you make. But unlike Heavy Rain though, the choices weren't that hard and I think some would have even less effect on the game plot. It's more of the actions you take that would really affect the game. There are a lot of things you could do within the game that would allow you to discover paths (thanks to Aiden's existence) unlike Heavy Rain where the possible actions are very linear. So there's really a lot to miss in Beyond: Two Souls if you're not very attentive or imaginative in some situations. ;)
RATING
5 stars! If you enjoy interactive video games, this is a must play! Quantic Dream really did a great job developing this game. Looking forward to their new title Detroit: Become Human releasing this 2018! :)
I had no idea what to expect with this game but it was AMAZING. very emotional, action-packed, and soft in all the right amounts. There's just one stretch of the game that I didn't like but that didn't kill the five star rating for me!
The lack of any repercussion of the majority of the game's decisions and a harder-to-relate-to character are grievances that ultimately don't detract from the brilliantly crafted and, as always, innovative storytelling.
I can't believe I enjoyed Beyond: Two Souls. I hated Heavy Rain (and I mean seriously hated) for every conceivable reason. Beyond is many things that Heavy Rain wasn't. I cared about the main character, Jodie, and I legitimately wanted to see where she'd go. Maybe I liked it because my expectations were low. The story takes some turns that don't seem logical, but I didn't mind really. It wasn't like Heavy Rain which literally made no sense. The story telling was almost Japanese at points. Things happen that are exaggerated and a bit ham-fisted but the performances were strong enough on all fronts that I enjoyed it. I thought of it more like a TV show than a game. Sure, some episodes aren't the best. But as a whole I liked it. Also, by now most of us have played this kind of story driven game. You have to understand that your choices don't really matter that much. Knowing this made it more enjoyable, because I could focus on just doing what I wanted instead of doing what I think might bring the “good” ending. The game looks really nice at points, too. The gameplay in these games should simply not get in the way. They don't need to be great to drive the story. If you can be mature and swallow a cynical attitude I think you can enjoy Beyond: Two Souls.

Tell me why they could not put subtitles during the Africa mission 😐 would be nice to know what they saying or with the cute kid w/a gun. Than I got to run from cops😮💨. Beat some big ass dogs off of me. Steal a bike, crash a car. Now my ass is homeless in the snow looking like a PSA for bad decisions! 😓 All with crappy controls. Loving the story but the game play not so much
What a great game, was so submerged in Jodie’s world!
I actually liked and enjoyed it more than I'd think.
(Game was good, Ryan Ending. Cole Lives, Ryan lives the good ending)

i've played two hours and some and i alredy got tired of this game. The story is entertaining but the gameplay is simply put a hassle, if you're planning to make a game that's mostly a movie, then the gameplay sections must add to the experience, and Beyond: Two Souls fails to achieve this. I'm playing this with a ps4 controller, as it was meant to, but the entire game is a quick time event, gameplay feels like an annoying task and an obstacle in the way of me enjoying a decent movie. This is the first game from Quantic Dream that i've played and it will also be the last one, i'll probably have a better time watching their games being played by someone else on youtube.
Kinda bad but still better than Heavy Rain imo. I would never have bought it for full price but a bundle for $9.50 was ok.

I see things at night... terrifying things. I tell myself it's only nightmares, but... I know it's not true. Once Pandora's box is open, it can never be closed again. No... it's not nightmares. It's what is about to happen. I've died twice already. I'm not afraid of death anymore.

Just started this. Gorgeous game, but the controls are a little getting used to... which in itself an odd thing to say for a game intended to be heavily story driven.
One of my favorite games is becoming free as part of May's PS Plus free games lineup. I recommend it to anybody who enjoys story-driven games.
I'm not a big fan of platformers but I'm really happy Rayman Legends is also becoming free to pick up. I've played it before at a friend's house, it's really fun.
Just finished Beyond: Two Souls! Wow. Really amazed on how Quantic Dream develops a unique story and awesome gameplay.
Will be writing a review on this soon, but definitely this is one game I'd like to replay with my friends.
I found Beyond to be a beautiful story that really made me think. I usually have a clear path in games with choices because I know myself very well, but I actually had to deliberate over a few of my choices in this game. There were some technical imperfections in Beyond, but I was able to enjoy playing it in a way I wasn't able to in some other games focusing on story over gameplay. I'm sure this game isn't for everyone, but it was definitely for me.
I avoided this game for ages because the reviews for it wasn't as good as I expected. But after seeing it reduced to £8 at the shops, I thought I'll give it ago. I love story driven games. The Telltale series is one of my favorites and Heavy Rain was really refreshing for me.
I'm really pleased I played this. There are issues with it in my opinion, the pacing at times is a bit inconsistent leaving parts of the game seeming to drag, but there is a good story in there and it's a must play for anyone who likes story driven games.
The beginning, in particular is quite clever. The way my actions scare the main character was really smartly done. It made me want to respect the powers I had and the control I had in the game. Unfortunately, for much of the game it seemed like no matter how I behaved, the same story would eventually play out. My control was not as influential as I though.
Still, well worth a play. There were some really cool scenes and ideas in it which I would not have wanted to miss.
What an amazing game. Those last 15 minutes were insane and I fucking loved it. Well worth the wait and I'll be starting a second playthrough very soon. Just breathtaking story.
