A great Persona game

What can I say, this is your classic Atlus game. If you played other games from the SMT universe before, you know what to expect. If you haven't, P3:R is a high-school-based lifesim, alternating with dungeon runs featuring turn-based combat.

Stylish presentation, good music, an interesting enough story, everything that you expect is there. Including the unfortunate mid-game grind that seems to come with most Atlus games, which is the reason why I never finished P5. And it honestly does feel a bit too long, because by the time you finally get to the last boss fight, you're so OP that there's basically no challenge.

Still, overall, this was a very enjoyable 77 hours, but it's gonna be a while before I get started on the next Atlus game. Maybe also worth noting that I played about half of this game on the SteamDeck, where it worked absolutely flawlessly.

I was never truly bored any time throughout playing it. and i would like to add that something happened to my ps4 while playing and i lost 4 hours of progress smh. but i kept playing and it was still enjoyable. the ending was absolutely CRAZY. i truly just cannot express how much i utterly adore this game. before i played, all i heard were bad things about this game, calling it boring. but it is now one of my favorite games of all time. it taught me so many lessons, and it really made me emotional at many parts. i highly reccomend this game to absolutely anyone.

ps: i did the yuko romance route my first play :) idk what other people did, but i absolutely loved her so

I feel like part of a small minority who felt entirely indifferent to a remake for P3 honestly, I dunno. I find P3FES just really great that I personally just don't find this remake needed, though I'm part of the small handful who don't mind the lack of party control in it.

Great game. It made me appreciate turn based for the first time. Despite some occasionally cheesy dialogue, the cast feels fully fleshed out. Game was a bit long, but the story was always compelling. Excited to play 4 and 5 soon.

I think over the years, Persona has become one of my favorite game series. Right up there with Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, and the various OG Nintendo franchises. Reload further solidified my love of the series.

I talk about games using the three M’s: Mental, Mechanical, eMotional.

Mental

You know the deal with Persona. Hit the enemy weaknesses and then pile on the damage with an All-Out-Attack. Reload does have a few boss fights that kind of become puzzles though. One of my favorites was the fight with Justice and Chariot shadows. That took a bit more ingenuity than usual.

Just stay on top of Persona fusion, and be sure to collect them from Shuffle Time to add to the compendium and you should do fine.

Mechanical

Being a turn based RPG, there’s not a lot of quick actions you need to worry about, but Reload does have a few challenges in terms of time management. This is a Persona game, so that’s a given. Using the network function will allow you to know what actions are possible in downtime. If you want the strongest Personas you will need to max out quite a few S Links. The shit I went through to get Lucifer was kind of making me lose it, but goddamn was he worth it.

Getting some of the higher level Personas can kind of make the game trivial. My Siegfried with maxed strength and luck could almost one shot mini bosses. But that’s part of the fun, I suppose.

Emotional

This is a Persona game, so the emotional investment is going to be extremely high. Forming bonds with people is a major mechanic in the series, but it’s a bit different than I’ve seen in the other games. For starters, you can only make Social Links with the female members of SEES, mainly for the purpose of dating one of them. But you can still Bro Out with Junpei and Akihiko by doing side activities which can unlock new abilities.

Living in a dorm with the rest of the team is a nice idea, and seeing everyone hanging out in the lounge is a very cozy sight every time. There you can cook with them, read, brush them (one of the teammates is a dog), tend the garden, and watch TV or movies with them. Getting the unique dialogue always felt rewarding, and it shows how fleshed out the cast are as characters. The group study sessions were some of the funniest moments in the game, too. I do miss the team S Links from the other games, but I do like that not everyone’s character development is tied only to that. A downside though, teammates just kind of show up. Getting an arc for each teammate in 4 made them feel special.

A strength that I think the Persona series has is its ability to change. Each game has similar mechanics, but the core concept changes each time. In 4 it’s a small town murder mystery with a group of scrappy kids trying to solve it, 5 has the Phantom thieves fighting against the man, and 3 has the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES) out to solve the mystery of the Dark Hour, a secret 25th hour that occurs at midnight every night. Stuff like this is always a win for me. I love the SEES uniforms with their red arm bands and kind of tacti-school uniforms.

The ending of the game, including the final battle, the FINAL final battle, and then the final day of school left me sad and satisfied in equal measure.

Reload is a game of strong themes. Death touches every one of the cast in unflinching, and usually cruel ways which gives the fight against an abstract concept a weirdly personal feeling. It is challenging in that way, so be aware.

If I keep going with this I’m just gonna list characters I liked, but I’ll say that I understood the characters well enough in the end that I could predict what they would say.

On a personal note: The uncertainty of what would come in the new year really hit home for me due to the current political climate in the United States. Getting to live in the world of Persona where good deeds matter more than anything gave me strength.

Conclusion I’ve gotten to the point where I see a Persona game as a special thing. They can be kind of slow, but the investment makes everything worth it.

Happy New Year.

I was really bummed when I tried playing Persona 3 last year and found it wasn't clicking for me. I was excited that I could try a vastly updated version, but was prepared for it to have the same issues I had with the Portable edition that was released for current systems. In pretty much no time I became obsessed with Reload. I think it wasn't until the introduction of characters outside of the core group of Sanada/Junpei/Yukari/Mitsuru that I realized that not only was this game hitting the same sweet spots as my first Persona exposure (P5Royal), but it was arguably tighter, smoother, and less frustrating than the most recent core entry.

I think, uniformly, P5Royal is an astonishing and epic game, but there were parts that sagged for me, and I accidentally missed the final season through both ignorance of what the game wanted me to do and piss poor time management. P3Reload feels much easier to juggle the combat and social link responsibilities to the point nothing feels like a chore. There were a couple social links I didn't care about, but the vast majority succeeded not just in making me appreciate side characters, but appreciating the silent protagonist to emotional degrees.

The combat is gorgeous and even relaxing once I found my groove. I easily accrued 110 hours in my playthrough just because Tartarus was so addictive to explore when my posse was firing on all cylinders. I think every main addition to SEES strengthened the narrative sensation that you were watching a group of outsiders become a family, which was something I adored about P5Royal and was super happy to find was just as strong here.

The ending was hair-raising good. The music kicked ass. I really have no complaints. One of the best games I've ever played.

Incredible remake of one of my favorite games of all time, so no surprise that this is one of my favorite games I've ever played. Combat as a whole was completely improved, the visual and layout overhaul of Tartarus makes it much more fun and interesting to explore, and full voice acted social links are great. Nearly every flaw I personally had with the original was completely rectified - the game is more fun, more polished, and plays much better. I appreciate that cool, important yet underutilized in the basegame characters like Ryoji and Shinjiro got more time to shine in here, too.

I only have a handful of nitpicks; I think the Theurgy mechanic made the game a little too easy (I played on Hard and it felt much, much easier than P3/P normal). I love the Link Episodes but they end up making the scheduling really tight for social link completion, which doesn't feel all too great. The last thing that kind of bothers me is the handling of the DLC, and exclusion of some P3P features, but I kind of think a lot of the complaints come from people who have not played either the Answer or the FeMC route because they are really nothing to write home about.

Still one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm glad it was done justice.

First we had Persona 3, then Persona 3 FES, followed by Persona 3 Portable, and this year Atlus released another version with Persona 3 Reload.

Title Screen

And I'd say it is the best version of Persona 3. I played Persona 3 FES and Portable, and FES feel kind of clunky because elements like not being able to control other characters, having to talk to each member of the team to equip weapons and armors, and the whole The Answer arc haven't aged that well, and Portable fixed all of these aspects, but the limitation of the hardware is very obvious, with everything portrayed like a standard visual novel where you have to read most of the events instead of watching them.

Meanwhile, Persona 3 Reload has the best of both worlds, with many quality of life and mechanics added (most of them borrowed from Persona 5, although some of them are brand new for the franchise) and the possibility of showing the events in great anime and CGI scenes that make the best moments of the story look better than ever, this is easily the best way to experience Persona 3.

Cutscene

Now, talking about the game itself, this is a mix between life sim and RPG, as you will be completing Tartarus and defeating bosses during the night while making friends, going to school and developing your social status during the day, and even if it sounds weird at first, it works really well, thanks to the excellent story that takes full advantage of this approach.

You're a new student at Gekkoukan High School, and in your first week you discover that you have a Persona, an ability that lets you attack monsters called shadows during the night while most people are unaware of what is happening behind the scenes. It is much more complex than that, but the less you know about the story, the more you will enjoy it.

Screenshot

Actually, Persona 3 has, in my opinion, the best story of the whole franchise. It is a product of its time, as it is dark and has a lot of inspiration from the emo scene, which is obvious just looking at the design of the protagonist. But it's far from being edgy or angsty, as there is a lot of death, betrayal and other sensitive topics here, but they are treated with the seriousness and respect they deserve.

Most of the events that happen during the story help developing the themes, and when you get to the ending it's hard not to appreciate how powerful the message of appreciating life and not being scared of death really is. You really get to know and like the characters, so the development and impact of their actions will hit you hard, as it is like watching a friend getting wiser and learning of their mistakes.

Gameplay

However, the game isn't perfect. The begining is very slow and not much happens in it, so the first hours can leave a negative impression, there is some filler during the middle of the game, like wasting an entire week in summer school for no reason at all, and Tartarus, the main gimmick in the RPG aspect, is extremely long and can be tedious and annoying, to the point that it can ruin your experience if you dislike it.

These problems are less severe than in the original versions, but they are impossible to fix without changing the entire foundation of the game, so you have to be patient and tolerate them in order to appreciate the good elements.

Gameplay

In conclusion, this isn't a perfect game, as you need to dedicate many hours and tolerate some problems if you decide to play it, but the story and characters make the whole experience worth it, so I'm sure it will leave a lasting impression on you.

Wonderful plot, wonderful characters, wonderful atmosphere. 70-ish hours and I got all the Steam achievements, so this is well worth your time. Amazing themes about making connections with others and facing death. Really some hard hitting emotional moments in the story beats and I was always enthralled. To anyone who tried this and gave up, I encourage you to play this version and give it another shot. It's definitely worth it. Can't wait to play more of these Persona games and SMT in general.

Atlus did it again! They reloaded the depression I felt after watching Persona's most melancholic ending ever. And I loved it all over again...

This might be one of the finest remakes I've ever played. Faithful to the core (too faithful, at times), and filled with accurate QOL improvements. Some of what I said about Persona 3 in my old review for the original still stands. But the whole game was refined.

You'll notice the difference right away. This game looks great! Not because its graphics are high-end, but because of how stylish and beautiful everything is. It contrasts a little to how FES looks, but it does its own thing. It feels like a very stunning saturated painting. Atlus is known for its stylish games, but this one, aesthetically, rivals P5.

After sorting through how good it looks, you'll get to how good it plays. And THANK GOD they polished it up! Did you play P3 or P4? Then you're home! But now you'll see how smoother it is. Grinding is not necessary, the challenge is more accessible, everything is faster, they filled Tartarus with new little details to make things a less sluggish, new small features to do while dungeon crawling, and even Shuffle Time is better.

ALSO, YOU CAN CONTROL ALL PARTY MEMBERS!!!!

And it's not just the meat of the gameplay that improved. The story got a small shine as well. The new translation sounds much better, writing flows well, there are new events with party members you couldn't interact much in the original, classic social links are all there and, plenty new stuff to do that helps the pacing and character motivation/backstory. They didn't change much, but improved upon it. I loved that characters like Aragaki, Chidori and even Aragaki gained a more screentime now. Made me appreciate the cast and story even more.

There are little things that FES did better, and some old flaws remain, but nothing terrible.

The tone, for example. Sure, the new artstyle is great, but the original feels much more moody and creepy. Even the anime scenes were more experimental then. It also took a bit of that mid-2000s feeling. Voice actors changed too. While they did a fantastic job, I still prefer how weird they most of them sounded back then. The music still sounds phenomenal, specially the new songs, like the new combat one, but some of the mixing in the original was better. It sounds cleaner now, which helps a few songs, like the school themes, but kinda takes the shine out of others, like the dorm theme.

And Tartarus is still... well, it still sucks. Much better now, for sure, since combat and traversing was improved. No more "fatigue", for example. But, like the original, just hurts the game's pacing. Even with everything new. But you'll get through that, for sure.

You'll get through because this game is fantastic! Feels like visiting old friends, but they all look better now. And if this is your first time here, well, lucky you! You'll get to experience my second favorite Persona game in its best shape.

Now they just HAVE to remake Persona 4...

I didn’t expect to get this into Persona 3 Reload after bouncing off of P3 Portable years ago and feeling somewhat conflicted about Persona 4. It didn’t take long though for its characters and gameplay loop to hook me. Despite some structural flaws that caused lulls here and there, I really enjoyed most of my time with it.

Combat here is a polished and snappy turn-based system with some of the best core ideas from the series. The streamlining of targeting known weaknesses and selecting relevant items is great. Clearing a group of enemies efficiently by hitting weaknesses and lining up synergies between your allies can be really satisfying. Persona fusion is also quick and puts power in the player's hands to select moves to inherit. It's pretty fun and easy to build a team with good coverage of different elements and buffs/debuffs.

Tartarus is the game’s main super-dungeon, a shifting tower with a whopping 264 floors to climb by the end of the game. For whatever combo of reasons, I enjoyed Tartarus more here than in Portable. It could still use more variety, but the floors are quick and have the right density of stuff to do. I think it should have stopped around floor… 200…? But that’s more a problem with the game’s length as a whole than a problem with Tartarus itself. I do kinda wish it had been scaled back in favor of the separate battle sections at the end of each chapter being more fleshed out as mini-dungeons.

When you’re not out battling monsters, it’s time for some addictive life simulation. The daily calendar loop established by P3 presents many options for flavoring the experience. It’s nice that it all raises some kind of stat or resource, and is mostly limited in when it can appear to encourage you to do a variety of stuff. With this approach to optional content, you’re also inherently always making forward progress no matter what you do. I always wanted to get one more day in before I stopped, which very easily turned into weeks…

Unfortunately, a whole year of daily life is too many days to stretch this story over. It's a problem that mainly manifests in the beginning and middle of the game in the form of excessive foreshadowing. The writers incessantly hint at the same questions and curious connections in a way that got frustrating for me. Later on it picks back up with a stronger narrative focus, but the forced day-by-day and month-by-month structure paired with the endless dungeon makes it feel too drawn-out.

Luckily, even in slower parts, Reload often does a pretty good job at integrating both fun and serious character moments into the main daily flow. Some of the game's social link side stories are duds, but most are solid. The main party is a memorable and well-balanced set of personalities, and it’s pretty compelling watching them grow through fun times and hardships. Later parts of the story are genuinely great, and it feels like pushing through the daily grind with those allies makes it all the more impactful.

Persona’s appeal in the last few entries is as much about style as anything else, and Reload has a lot of style. The soundtrack is mostly excellent, exciting or chill when it needs to be while rarely feeling annoyingly repetitive. (I could have done without the raps, but admittedly they eventually got stuck in my head.) UI elements are clear while having a distinctive flair, and character art has a lot of color and personality.

Overall it's a very solid game that occasionally tested my patience but was eventually easy to get back in the groove of. I’m glad it came to Game Pass to give that extra encouragement for me to try it out.

I hesitate going backwards in a series, but the Reload remake was perfect for a guy like me - really into JRPGs, but am spoiled by modern quality of life updates and standards. This has an incredible, sleek look to it and plays very similarly to Persona 5. The music isn't as good (what is?) and I don't think it's as overall as strong a package, but there's a ton to like here.

By nature, a Persona game can feel repetitive but I didn't mind Tartarus at all - I usually just threw a podcast on and enjoyed exploring each floor and engaging in the snappy, terrific combat. Fusing Personas never gets old, nor does taking down a tough fight and choosing which party members to take with you.

It's a rigid, repetitive structure and it won't be for everybody but this was an amazing experience overall. I'm sad it's over!

Been stewing on this game for a while now. On one hand, it does a good job developing the main team, letting them have their own development through the story that constantly changes. This is something P4 and P5 fails to do, it's mostly letting them have their arc once you meet them and then a social link/confidant to explore them a bit further, but then they stay mostly the same when you're doing the main story. On the other hand, some baffingly world breaking stuff happens in P3 that is just never discussed. The world is falling apart, and I sure appreciate the characters questioning themselves and what they want to do, but I just wanted them to talk a bit more about the world and how it is affected. The game is decent, and I enjoyed my time with it even with it's hangups.

In my rush to complete this game so I can start Final Fantasy VII Rebirth I forgot the deadline of a couple side quests, and some NPCs died horrific deaths due to my neglect. Sorry bros.

Despite jumping on this remake fairly soon after its release, I don't have nearly the history with this series that many others interested in it will. I played Persona 3 Portable on the PSP for a few hours close to when it came out, but while I liked it well-enough, I wasn't too gripped with the opening of the game and generally struggle to play especially long games on handheld so I didn't get further than that. I've also played the first 3-5 hours of Persona 5 a few years ago, but didn't get too into its opening either. Otherwise, I just have not-insignificant knowledge-by-osmosis of the series from a few close friends who are very into these games. So all that to say, while I didn't nearly go into this game without any prior knowledge, I will mostly be reviewing this game based on my thoughts on Persona 3 rather than how Reload compares to previous versions, only noting the remake status in a few places where appropriate.

It's like she doesn't realize what day it is and that Junpei and I obviously have plans.

Persona 3 is undoubtedly one of the most anime games I've ever played (if not #1). I used to watch a good deal of anime when I was much younger, but the last decade or so, I can just never get into it. I guess I'd say I "grew out of it," though I don't mean the usual condescension that phrase often implies. It's true some anime tropes just hit me in the cringe a little hard these days, but I mostly just feel like my interests have changed and I struggled to hold more than a passing interest in the few shows I've occasionally tried out over the last ten years or so. That said, I find this general aversion doesn't really translate to games and I still enjoy a good number of games with a highly-anime style, even if it's not a go-to genre for me. Even still, this was a serious reservation I had about playing a game so emphatically dedicated to the anime High School slice-of-life concept. That said, while I think the characters, sub-plots, and premise probably would've landed with me a bit more in my younger days, I still enjoyed the game and style quite well and managed to only have a few wince moments throughout its length.

I realize this is partially a dating sim and these are High Schoolers, but damn are there a lot of horny and/or creepy-ass people in this game.

One of the most striking features of the game is the Social Link system which finds your character interacting with, befriending, and shaping the lives of several people. This ends up being the core of a lot of the game outside of dungeon-crawling and combat as while some of your companions eventually become Social Links, much of your time is spent managing your day-to-day schedule with a variety of NPCs. The bulk of these Social Links are related to your school life (which is unsurprising, given your 6-day school week), but there are several involving adults and people outside of school too. These Social Links follow a series of hangouts where you'll answer questions that will improve your relationship with the social link to varying degrees, which not only has mechanical implications I won't get into, but also progress their individualized sub-plot. While I consider this a core part of the game and is most of the aspect I personally enjoyed, the Social Links themselves vary a lot in quality. Several of them are genuinely moving and enjoyable and provide solid side-story content to complement the game's main plot. But among other people you hang out with are some frankly unpleasant people and you are incentivized to indulge their proclivities and encourage their delusions to progress the Social Link. I enjoyed those particular sub-plots more when I viewed it more as my character being somewhat sadistically invested in watching them fall. Caveats aside though, the schedule-management simulator is shockingly quite engaging and addicting and lining up your schedule with your various Social Links' availability is a large part of that fun.

enter image description here

Relatedly, there's a social stats system measuring our protagonist's developing Courage, Charm, and Academics. This was a pretty fun minor mechanic in which your actions are rewarded with stat boosts that will occasionally come in handy when interacting with Social Links. For instance, choosing to spend your time studying will improve your academics, whereas working at the cafe will improve your Charm and Courage (as well as get you paid). Certain Social Links won't activate or progress beyond a certain point if you don't have a high enough stat in a certain category so you will spend much of your non-Social Link waking hours (usually at night) upping these stats. I found this weirdly pretty fun early on and it reminded me a lot of my days as a kid addicted to Monster Rancher. My only real complaints are that these stats honestly are relevant to very little considering how much work goes into maxing them and further, given the length of the game, you're likely to max them no later than 2/3 through, leaving a lot of your night time weirdly empty beyond that.

But wait a second, is this just a dating-sim visual novel or a JRPG? That's a very good question actually. However, yes, there is a significant turn-based JRPG gameplay element to the game and in my eyes it is very hit-or-miss. On the positive side, I think the combat system itself is pretty good. There's a lot of depth and breadth to it with numerous damage types that enemies will have strengths and weaknesses to. You have to do some trial-and-error to find these, but once you get a well-rounded few personas (personae?) and party, you can trigger satisfying combos that allow you to mop the floor with the enemies before they can even act. While turn-based combat is somewhat out of fashion in this day and age, I found the mechanics of this system to feel pretty fluid and engaging most of the time, likely helped with the faster-pace of this being a more recent remake. Further, our protagonist is not limited to just one persona and there's a very large but straight-forward encyclopedia of entities you can control to give you many many options. Admittedly, the variety of these personae's abilities gets repetitive once you've gotten halfway through the game, but there's still a good deal of variety and depth to this system you can explore.

enter image description here

The downside to this more "gameplay" side of Persona 3 is that the singular major dungeon, Tartarus, is frankly unambivalently fucking awful. It is just a giant tower comprising 250+ floors procedurally-generated using dull combinations of the same handful of room layouts, no real puzzles or story elements beyond occasional repetitive stock dialogue, and the same few encounters over and over and over and over. I didn't mind the first stretch of Tartarus, especially as I was just getting accustomed to the combat system and still learning. The next few were okay, especially as you start to get new party members to try out, adding some variety. But by the last 4 or 5 trips to Tartarus (which I typically tried to get through in one block per story segment all at once), I actively dreaded it and started just watching TV or listening to audiobooks while I ground through it. I was thoroughly disturbed when I heard that Reload actually improves several things about Tartarus and it was somehow worse in previous versions. I was going to add a caveat or plus side but I realize I don't really have one. Even enjoying the combat system as I mentioned didn't help much considering how terribly repetitive the encounters are. This is basically entirely the reason this isn't a 5-star game to me and it says a lot about the rest of the game that I still give it 4 as the Tartarus dungeon itself tempts a 1-star rating in a vacuum. I just hate it and think the game would be significantly better if you had a mod that skips Tartarus and levels you accordingly to handle the story's combat sections.

Okay, I guess that's a caveat: there are a few mini-dungeon segments that break up the different months of the game with some exploration and combat, generally taking place outside Tartarus. Those parts I generally liked pretty well and were a great change-up from Tartarus, especially with the more interesting puzzle-like boss fights. The above paragraph doesn't otherwise apply to those segments.

The main story of the game is as well kind of hit or miss, but mostly a hit. My only reservations are that the very beginning (3-5 hours) is pretty slow and unengaging and that the middle third of the game felt full of filler. I know the series' reputation is often all about boasting how large and long the games are, but I feel like, in classic anime fashion, this is only accomplished by including enough filler to make Naruto weep (okay, maybe not that bad). That said, the rest of the main plot I really enjoyed. I think it does all the things that a good anime premise should quite well. It has a good focus on theme with an intriguing problem the main cast is specially equipped to face and turns your understanding of the world on its head multiple times. The characters are generally good. Most of the time they can be a little one-dimensional, but with a story this long, they inevitably open up to be more interesting and serve multiple story-telling purposes. While I enjoyed most of the parts aside from those I mentioned at the start of this paragraph, the final act of the game (the last 2 or 3 months I think) were pretty outstanding and felt like a huge payoff when the slog of the big middle and the seemingly endless Tartarus runs had me considering putting the game down. While I wish the downsides earlier on weren't there, I do feel like the concluding arc was really satisfying and made it all worth it. It's definitely one of those stories that feels like a massive investment that probably took more of your time than it should've, but leaves you feeling bittersweet when you finally have to roll the credits and say goodbye to this story and characters you've spent so much time with (unless I suppose you're up for a NG+ run...).

I mainly picked this up because one of those aforementioned Persona-obsessed friends was playing it on Game Pass and I thought I'd try it with a Game Pass trial. While playing such a long game with a 2-week time limit is something I'd normally not recommend, I think it helped me to push through those early hours of the game that really didn't hook me and also kept me going so I actually finished it out. In fact, I didn't play it much the first 5 days of that 2 weeks so it was mostly during a little over a week I finished this 60-hour game (I'm certainly no expert on comparing the versions, but this one seems significantly shorter than previous versions, likely because the load times are non-existent and with the number of screen transitions in this game, I imagine that has a massive impact on overall playtime). At the end of the day, I'm glad I did finish it. As I ranted about, I found the dungeon-exploration frankly pretty awful and that left some sour taste in my mouth for the game; but on the whole I was pretty happy with it. I'm definitely going to give it some time, maybe even a lot of time given my Tartarus-fatigue (though I've heard the dungeons improve considerably with the following games), but I do expect I'll try 4 and 5 some time, in whatever version is out by then. Side note: do they really need so many damn versions of these games?!

Of the three mainline Persona games I've played (3, 4 and 5), Persona 3 was my least favorite. I completed its Portable incarnation on Vita while enduring a daily train commute: Outside of that context, its compromised presentation can't hold my interest. More recently, I followed some guides on achieving the "ideal" FES experience on my Steam Deck using emulation and mods. While this was an improvement, the world (and especially Tartarus) felt incredibly dull to me, so I dropped off after a few hours.

So while I understand that some of this entry's biggest fans are disappointed with the remake's presentation or its cut content, for me it's been a dream come true to revisit this game through the lens of my personal favorite entry in the series:

  • Tartarus has been dramatically improved, more on par with the dungeons of P4 and P5's Mementos.
  • Combat may be a new high for the series, with direct control (no mods required) and a slightly more balanced "one more" mechanic than in P5.
  • The updated key art by Azusa Shimada and team is gorgeous, feeling true to the spirit of Shigenori Soejima (who had a supervisory role this time).
  • Tomohiro Kumagai's UI work extends the game's blue color palette to metaphors of water and drowning, with captivating results.

It falls just short of reaching Persona 5's heights: The dungeons and world are still less refined, the quality of social links varies dramatically, and some of the remixed music feels like a misstep. But this remake manages to unseat Persona 4 Golden as my second favorite in the series: I look forward to revisiting Gekkoukan High sometime soon.

Finished on Merciless at just a little over 50 hours. I love this game. I've played every single version of Persona 3 though that was long ago with my last playthrough being of the Portable version over a decade ago. After playing the more recent Persona games, which I also did enjoy, I wondered if going back to this would still hold up. I have no doubt in my mind now that this is still my favorite Persona game by a huge margin. It's certainly much simpler in scope compared to 4 and 5, but I honestly think that's its biggest strength. There's no grand murder mystery to solve, no lofty goal of trying to fight against corrupt society, it's just a group of people who initially come together to fight for good because they have power to do so, and eventually finding their own reasons to fight and move forward. Fantastic game and I definitely cried in the last hour of it.

Just finished the game, and have to say it definitely hit me in a great way. Having never played the original before, it lived up to the expectations set upon it.

A couple random thoughts:

  1. The story is incredibly backloaded, things only really get going once you get to Act 3 but once you get there it is an emotional rollercoaster.
  2. This game somehow has some of the best and worst social links. On one hand you have Akinari, and the interaction with his mother after his passing, as one of the best links in the whole franchise. The other hand, you have creeps like Suemitsu and Kenji that were a chore to sit through.
  3. As someone who played the other "neo-Persona" games before this one, not having social links with guys in your party was strange. I'm glad they changed that in later entries, I like getting to know all of the party on a personal level.

I feel like all of the "neo-Persona" games all have something that I like about them the best:

  • P3: Story
  • P4: Characters
  • P5: Gameplay and Style

Only a few hours in, but a few thoughts:

  • The updates to the combat are definitely welcome. Can't abuse knockdowns quite as much as you used to be able to. I think I actually liked the game's prior fatigue system compared to its current iteration of being restricted by how much SP you have to spare.
  • The tone of the game feels a little too clean compared to the original. The songs all sound a little more light and cheery compared to the original game's darker tone - Meguro's original songs really had a grittiness to them with their hard hitting kick drums. The new OST simply sounds like it's missing its grit, and there's no option to swap to the original despite the fact that the game supports alternative soundtracks from the other Persona games. Example tracks:
    • Mass Destruction: the new version features a lot more soft piano and the trumpets sound a lot more MIDI-like (even though both are clear synths). The drop at the end of the verse into the chorus is really lacking the percussive hit that made the first work so well. The new version has a Lotus Juice verse that's pretty damn good, though.
    • Unavoidable Battle: borderline butchered. The opening line was messed with in a way that takes away from the intensity as only the bass is playing the first four eighth notes for no reason. The drums are far quieter, taking away from the tension of the song.
    • Joy: the trumpets sound like they're ripped straight from the most basic MIDI, and the drums have been completely neutered.
  • Gameplay wise, they've mixed up which shadows are weak to what, so the game has the sensation of not knowing exactly what to do at each encounter, which is nice
  • The controls are actually great on PC. Many Japanese devs don't do great PC ports, but Atlas nailed this one.

Going to need more time to the game to solidify my opinions, but so far so good minus the music. Hoping modders fix it.
