I had a fun and janky time with the game and even felt like going for 100%. Unfortunately collecting enough money for the last couple achievements is a huge bummer. I was already so close to 100% so I did it. It's a waste of time to do this and brings my rating down, just bad achievement design.

I have a higher tolerance for games with jank and an appreciation for games that let you crack them wide open, and both those things describe this one. Sure, the controls could be smoother and the camera could be better and it's hard to tell where you are in relation to the thing you need to land on or tether to, but the gameplay at its core is solid and does incentivize creative problem solving. An oversight in the movement system allows you to scale almost any wall, so it's possible to beat some levels in half a minute. I enjoyed my time with it. Might even go back to 100% it.

Pros
  • Unlimited lives. I'm glad that even though it was inspired by the PS1/N64 era, they didn't feel the need to implement a life mechanic.
  • Checkpoints. Being able to have unlimited continues at checkpoints made the game much more bearable in the harder parts of the game. I will say that the checkpoints seemed to be spaced oddly in some stages though.
  • I liked collecting hats.
Cons
  • It seemed inconsistent with whether or not you could grab on to things at an angle or if you had to be facing it directly.
  • The timing for some of the jumps and zipline segments are pretty brutal because they have a small window of execution. It doesn't help that a lot of the sections require to use the zipline in mid-air and you can't see your targeting reticle until you make an attempt. And even when you see your reticle on an object, sometimes you won't actually hit the object that it's hovering over.
  • There seems to be some kind of aim assist in this game too because I would be trying to aim forward, but Renata would turn and aim at something to the side. A lot of falling into pits and taking damage because of this.
  • Bosses felt longer than they needed to be, especially when they repeat the same pattern twice and you have to wait until the end of the second set before you get a chance to counterattack.
  • It was also frustrating repeating levels to complete missions just because I missed a single jar somewhere in the stage.
  • Wasn't a big fan of the sound design or music. It got repetitive and dull after awhile.

I like the game's concept, but I wasn't a big fan of the execution. Also, I found it interesting that the game claims to be inspired by the PS1/N64 era in its description, but I can't really identify the games that inspired it. I can point out small things like how Renata looks like a Mega Man Legends character and the Jake stages being somewhat reminiscent of Koopa the Quick from Super Mario 64, but that's about it. Gameplay-wise, the closest thing I can think of is Klonoa because of the ability to pick up enemies, but that's a bit of a stretch. I'd be interested in looking up interviews to learn more about what specifically inspired this game.

final boss is absolute bullshit. maybe i'm missing some sort of visual cue but i have no idea how you are supposed to dodge the attack where a pillar spawns and you have to stand behind it to block 3 waves of chainsaws coming from a random direction. there is no way to spin my camera enough to check all 4 directions, much less move to the correct side of the pillar once i've seen the direction. you'd need superhuman reflexes. it's totally random whether i get lucky enough to see it and dodge. and this happens literally 9 times in a row in the hard mode boss rush level so it's just 9 random chances of getting hit in a row and likely dying.

Guns don't kill people, Froguns kill people.

I was confused at first because I wasn't sure what the game was asking of me. Once I got used to the controllers and the antiquated system for aiming the frogun I started having fun... but the the difficulty goes berserk at the final levels and I found myself repeating the same sections dozens of times. It was frustrating.

I don't think Frogun is a bad game. Just the visual are enough to make it worthwhile, but I wish the developers would have compromised a little of the retro features to make it more... let's say "playable".

My first contact with this game wasn't great.

It looks amazing and has a lot of charm, but the controls are clunky and the levels doesn't really seem designed with consideration for the character skills. Let's see if it gets better.

This actually does look cute, and I've been in a platformer mood lately. I wonder how hard it will be.

Played through the demo. Despite the retro look, it's more like Captain Toad than anything else, with little puzzlebox levels that you rotate around to find secrets and gems and such.

The visuals are super charming and there's shiny coins to collect, but neither the jumping nor the frograppling feel especially fun, and the level design started to feel repetitive even within the short demo. Bit of a letdown!
