Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Spirit of Justice: Special Episode - Turnabout Time Traveler
This review is for the Nintendo 3DS version

Time traveler is an apt title for this DLC. It kind of takes the series back to its roots in a way. Bringing Larry back, mentioning Mia and Gumshoe, having Edgeworth be the prosecutor (without his glasses and with his animations from the original trilogy), and having Maya be the assistant. They did a good job giving an excuse for the newer characters to not be involved in this case. No AJ perceiving or Athena therapy to be found. It's a nice episode, but nothing amazing. It feels like an encapsulation of my thoughts on the 3D era of Ace Attorney

  • References feel like they pander to nostalgia for the sake of it sometimes. There's a stretch of the case and some evidence you find that ultimately lead to nowhere and had me thinking "what was the point" other than being a cute reference to the original trilogy.
  • Phoenix is not really taken seriously at all. Even when he's making stuff up, we as the audience know that, but the 3D era shoves it in our face that he just makes it up instead of being competent. This negative perception ruins my actual perception of the character, which isn't good …

  • The 3D era really emphasizes absurdity. The series has always been silly, but 3D era definitely went all-in on that aspect. This case wasn't egregious with it, but there was one moment where it reminded me of moments I didn't like in DD and the main SoJ game.
  • As much as I have a lesser opinion of the 3D era games, there are moments that are really hype or touching.
