If you like the humour in the game then I'd say it's a worthwhile purchase - I enjoyed the single-player adventure despite problems with pacing and some of the puzzles. However I found the online game initially maddeningly chaotic until I got to grips with the surprising complexity of the gameplay on offer.

Good, but not as great as I remember

Just a few thoughts, after finishing this game:

  • The game itself is a fairly typical platformer, and if you've played any of the other Rare games from 20+ years ago you'll have a good idea of what to expect. All the areas are inter-connected and are diverse though the game plays in a straight line and doesn't require much exploration. There are no collectibles other than wads of cash which are needed to progress at one or two points into the game, but don't seem to have any other purpose.
  • The controls were OK (better than I feared), the difficulty ranged from easy to moderate, and the camera could sometimes be annoying. Some areas I remember being incredibly frustrating on the N64 version were mercifully much easier for Live & Reloaded (like the longer underwater segment, or the area where you have throw knives to take out dangling power lines). In total, the game took me maybe 13 hours to complete.
  • The visuals are still quite good. Along with Ninja Gaiden, Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and a few others, it's definitely one of the best looking games on the original Xbox, and look/runs even better on modern Xbox consoles.
  • The voice acting is still quite good, though the crude writing can get repetitive and devolves into outdated movie satire near the end. There are lots of legitimately funny moments, but there are limits to how entertaining swearing and farting can be when repeated over and over again.

I bought this digitally for $10 on the Xbox store, and I wouldn't consider it a bad deal by any means - But like a lot of earlier Rare games, it just wasn't as good as I remember it either.
