Mechanically, the game is very simple and presents only very mild obstacles to your progress. As it stands, I have played through this a couple of times but am still not quite sure what the story is. There clearly appears to be some lost civilization but I am unclear on the particulars of the story behind it or the exact role of the player in this. However, this evidently is all by design and, in general, I tend to prefer things being left as implication or up to interpretation ("show don't tell"). Regardless, the game is beautiful and has a certain simplicity to its artwork that works really well. I enjoyed my time exploring the ruins and trying to piece together the story as well as the light multiplayer component to the game.
All in all, very nice!

Amazing visuals, music and atmosphere. It tells a story without any words The multiplayer aspect of it is really original and interesting as well.
If you are used to only playing action games it may feel strange or boring at first, just explore with curiosity, without knowing exactly what you're doing.

After decades of games getting bigger and bigger in both scope and budget year by year, it was the first time in a very long time that the best game of the year was an indie that could be completed in one sitting. It's a game with a spare yet gorgeous visual style, a stirringly emotional soundtrack and a novel multiplayer component. It's one of the few games I would recommend to absolutely anyone with even a minor curiosity in the art form that is video games. It encapsulates the experience that every person who enjoys games finds when they play something that challenges and rewards them: The joy, excitement and wonder of overcoming a series of escalating obstacles in pursuit to some final great reward. And in this case, the reward is the journey itself.

Like playing a beautiful painting; except you might form a weird and beautiful connection along the way.

The music is, of course, absolutely stunning, and fits the world perfectly, and the lack of spoken word makes the game so much more subtly alive. I played halfway through with a fellow player I met on the way, which made the first half feel incredibly connected. I was then left alone for the second half of my Journey, feeling not lonely but invigorated. A wonderful game for wonder in one sitting.

1 Sentence Review - Journey
There have been few games that can be labeled art but Journey is an atmospheric... journey, that lingers for far longer that you might expect.

Like some of my most memorable gaming experiences, Journey transcends the standard Crush Your Enemies/In It To Win It mentality of other games. Instead, it evokes in the player a sense of their smallness in the face of a breathtaking desert landscape scattered with mysterious remnants of a fallen civilisation.
The game was created with minimalism and harmony of elements in mind, and the player is able to intuitively explore and wonder at the world around them without any rigid direction.
The majestic narrative, while purposefully vague and open to interpretation, is structured around the universality of the hero’s journey, in which players are also able to 'meet' fellow wanderers over the course of their voyage. There's no method of communicating beyond enigmatic singing patterns, so any prejudice or division engendered by language doesn't come between anyone. Instead, players are emotionally connected through their shared pilgrimage – however temporarily.
If everyone played Journey, the world could well be a better place.
I've chosen this as an example of a game I feel has elevated the medium to an art form. Please check out my blog, Inky Squiggles, to see the others!

Now, the not so good. I was about an hour in, and finally got the hang of the gameplay and controls, when it suddenly ended. I was shocked and disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I did not feel short changed in price, but more in the build up in the experience. I really wanted a lot more, and this felt more like a demo for an upcoming release. I know there are little secrets here and there that I may have missed, and could have increased the time played, but based on what I read, wasn't very much.
Its been about 8 years since its original release, and very surprised there hasn't been a proper full expanded sequel.
Overall, great game, and if it wasn't for the short gameplay, would have gotten 5 stars.

Well, if you're curious, it's a walking simulator with some puzzle elements, That's not to say it's not a great game, just what genre it fits in. The story is simple and concise, the visuals are rather beautiful and artsy, and the music is thematic and worthy of that Grammy nomination.
That said, the best part of the game is the co-op experience. When I met my first player I wasn't sure if they were a real human or a CPU player the game added, but by my 2nd encounter ensured it was a real human on the other end. Then it was an interesting game of "follow the leader", a quick, unspoken bond formed to not leave a friend behind. Luckily the 'puzzles' aren't too hard, so you don't need vocalization to cooperate with your partner.

My second play was at a more reasonable 9 PM and I finished the rest of the game during that second sitting. I was surprised when my first companion showed up. He or She was very helpful. I love that you can't directly communicate with each other. During my play-though I had 4 different companions. It is such an interesting feature and I would like to see it added to more games. The game is truly beautiful and moving. I'm glad I finally got to give it a go.

Even from my brief experience with it, it was an undeniably beautiful and heart touching game. It had no dialogue and each story snippet had to be largely inferred based on pictures and facial expression. It has one of the most beautiful soundtracks I have ever heard from a game, spectacular minimalistic style, and gameplay that is simple but ties in perfectly to its thematic elements. The sandskiing segment stands out as one of the most breathtaking visual segments in gaming, and during the game's final hike I felt it was ME that clung to life. This is one of the most dynamic and immersive games I've ever played. I really hope to own this someday, and will definitely look more into Thatgamecompany's productions.
