Pretty good game but do not play the iOS version

This game is like a Metroidvania without any luxuries the genre affords you. The map is unusable, no item % or any way to track secrets. The level design is just baffling and illogical. The iOS version crashed about 20 times (and I couldn’t even finish the final boss). BUT I did enjoy it a bit.

This game is like a Metroidvania without any luxuries the genre affords you. The map is unusable, no item % or any way to track secrets. The level design is just baffling and illogical. The iOS version crashed about 20 times (and I couldn’t even finish the final boss). BUT I did enjoy it a bit.

The writing is the best of any shantae game. There’s actually some very funny moments of dialogue, which I don’t recall in any other game in the series. The exploration was pretty fun, and some of the challenges were unique.

The abilities suck - you change forms and it only applies to specific situations- a point off the Metroidvania scale. The art is ok, the platforming is super basic. Some of the secrets were fun to find.

I honestly went in expecting a linear experience but it did scratch the Metroidvania itch more than I thought it would. Pirate’s Curse is a way more fun game, but this was honestly probably my second favorite in the series. If it weren’t for the iOS port crashes I would give it 3 stars, but that’s just unforgivable.

I didn't think I was going to finish anything else this year, but I decided to have another go at Shantae: RIsky's Revenge as I didn't get too far the first time. I think this was the first Shantae game I tried back in the day and I didn't "get it" at the time. Having played and enjoyed the later games, I now know what I'm doing and beat it this time around in about 5 1/2 hours.

In fact, playing 1/2 Genie Hero and Seven Sirens, with their banging soundtracks and smooth visuals, may have ruined Risky's Revenge for me a bit. It's shorter, a little grainy and the chip tune music lacks the same oomph (although it still looks and sounds great). All in all, it's a bit more dated. But still very solid.

I think I need to go back and pay Pirate's Curse now, as I can't remember much about that either!
