Down the rabbit hole

Max Payne is a bullet time deep-layered stoic character with itchy trigger fingers and the comic book panels telling the story are excellent in showing us more than some dialog lines. 10/10.

Not really sure...

Not really sure on whether it deserves 3 or 4 stars. So for now I'm gonna leave it at 3, may take it up to 4 upon revisiting.

However, I really liked this game.

Finished!

I really enjoyed this game. It felt like I was the hero in a gritty movie. I enjoyed the little interactive elements.

Täyttä kipunointia
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

Bullet-timen vaarin ensimmäinen luku toimii. Lyhyitä pätkiä matrix-tyylistä räiskintää ja noir-tyylisiä sarjakuva-inserttejä. Sitten alkaa alamäki. Uni-takaumien millintarkat hyppelyt, ja chapter 3... jossa pelin luonne muuttuu täysin. Täynnä half-life-tyylisiä miinoja, jotka eivät eroa riittävästi synkästä taustasta. Miinoja hississä. Miinoja käytävillä. Miinoja metallipajalla.

PS2-version mukana tulee bullet time vakiona, sillä peli nykii ja hidastelee jatkuvasti. Surkea porttaus, joka käy pelattavuuden rajamailla.

Classic Shooter That Mostly Holds Up

It took me a bit to warm up to Max Payne. The graphics and shooting are showing their age; however, there is a lot that works here.

The graphic novel-style cut scenes work great, they really nail the over-the-top noir vibe too.

The story isn't anything special, but the style works extremely well. As the game went on I started to hit a flow with the gameplay. Using the bullet time and dodging heavily is really the only way to progress, but as I played it started to click how to use them.

I think the part that aged the worst are the sections where you have to jump across spaces and platforms, and the spots where you have to balance across things are extremely frustrating.

There are parts that are nightmare episodes that have a lot of balancing. They are very cool stylistically, but SUCH a pain to play through.

Overall, I had fun, but I don't think this is a must play.

I got lots of enjoyment from Max Payne it even though its ten years old by now. Its got a really cinematic feel and the story will keep you hooked to the end. Also really like the graphic novel format for the story.

Max Payne was a gem to play and, even after many years, it still looks and plays great. In the core it is a standard, linear third person shooter, but very well implemented with a great story.

First, the love for this game is still alive, because normally, it will not run on modern hardware. But the community made a special patch that you can apply so the game will work perfectly after that.

In Max Payne, you are a cop that is chasing the murderers of your wife and child by unraveling the criminal gang that is behind it. You are a one-man army that eradicates everyone in your way. You search for answers, while meeting many different characters that help or betray you along the way, all while wiping out half of New York City.

Eventually, you find the b!tch behind it all, find out that a new drug is going to be used as an ultimate weapon for the US military and stop this dead in its tracks by infiltrating the facility and blowing it to bits.

Eventually, you find the b!tch behind it all, find out that a new drug is going to be used as an ultimate weapon for the US military and stop this dead in its tracks by infiltrating the facility and blowing it to bits.

I really liked the story element of this game. It always made me wonder what would happen next and the comic book L.A. Noire strips are a great way of telling you what happens.

The Nightmare levels in which you play the events of your family massacre over and over again are actually pretty disturbing. The crying of the baby, you wife begging for mercy, all while you run along endless corridors of your house in your own head.

This game is hard. It is all about timing your shots and anticipating enemies that come running towards you from out of nowhere. If you walk right into them, they shoot you faster than you can say “oh sh!t”. The Slow Motion really helps with the game, although in some fights, it makes it too easy.

The graphics are incredible, considering the time period this game got made, especially the facial animations and expressions. When looking at it closer, it is literally some dudes face in .png slapped over a polygon, but it is very well implemented. The animations, bullet holes and explosions are also very well done. Half the time, I forgot that I was playing a game from 2001.

The sound effects and music are excellent. Guns feel like guns instead of pea shooters and the explosions sound effects are as they should be. Thumbs up for the sound department.

The controls work fluently and feel responsive. The healing mechanics, the Slow-Motion, the aiming, it is all just right. There is nothing to complain about there.

Some minor annoyances that I had with the game are the slow-motion mechanics for example. While great for anticipating and reacting to sudden enemies that appear, it can be very frustrating when you dive into a dead corner which does not provide any cover and there is nothing you can do about it. You first must wait for the animation in slow motion until it’s over. This issue has been fixed in the next game, in which you can dive in slow motion and use it stationary.

Another thing is that the game sometimes starts you in a room with four or five enemies in a level, giving you 0.1 seconds to react or else you get pumped full of lead instantly.

The game can be a little repetitive because it always follows the same principle. A linear doorway, enemies spawn, kill enemies, progress. But I do not mind, this game is just fine as it is. It offers a lot of playtime, levels and adventure and is worth every penny.

In the end, I can only praise Max Payne and wished I played it sooner in my youth.

Definitely recommend this blast from the past.

A path filled with Payne. Mostly Max Payne
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

Max Payne was one of those games that, since it involved pretty much just shooting everything and everyone, I was not interested in at all at first. But once I started playing it, I was HOOKED! I didn't know I could be so invested in the story of a man seeking vengeance who ALSO happens to have a paracetamol addiction. I especially liked the way the narration and story were shown and told, making it seem like the dialogues were comic strips and adding a rough watercolor-esque style to them.

Although I must admit, all that shooting around did end up becoming quite repetitive for me, since the story was actually pretty interesting, I kept on going to find out what was going to happen next. Still, the final stage was a nightmare for me, and the ending kind of left a bittersweet taste in my mouth. I guess it's meant to be that way, but it still felt a bit dull once I finished it. Did that ending make me change my thoughts on the game entirely? No! It was still all worth it.

I should mention that the nightmare scenes, even if they were a payne in the …

I should mention that the nightmare scenes, even if they were a payne in the ass, are among my favorites. The game may be old, but it's still one hell of a good ride! Beating all of the enemies in slow motion always felt amazing and badass as well.

Bringing the Payne
This review is for the PlayStation 2 version

After trying time and time again as a kid to complete this game, I finally got round to it over two decades later…and I am so glad I did. Looking back Max Payne was so far ahead of its time and incredibly innovative. The introduction of bullet time was something I had never seen at the time and is something that never gets old, even all these years later. There was also an impressive array of weapons to choose from throughout the game too. All unique and impactful. Visually this game was also impressive for its time, although the face models haven’t aged well and now are actually quite comical :) An immersive story also unfolds right from the get go and I was completely engaged in Max’s quest for revenge. The game also links in nightmare sequences which again is relatively innovative at this time (although immensely frustrating - especially for a kid!) Overall I am so happy I got to go back and finish this game, and I am now on a quest to get the sequel completed!

22 YEARS LATER...
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Well, finished game after 22 years since release, now i understand why it hold the "CLASSIC" title, it aged really great, especially considering modern standards of gaming industry. I guess "peak of gaming" is really long gone. Twenty-two-year-old game feels fresher, unique and interesting than majority of releases so called AAA games in last 5 years. More often old games prove me that "modern gaming" it's just a big endless joke. It's kind of sad that make such a big leap forward in technologies we made the proportionally opposite big leap in creative variety.

zadrotimus's review of Max Payne

Recently Remedy has been getting a lot of positive press, both due to the reception of Control and renewed interest in Alan Wake. At this point they are some of the most respected AAA developers out there.

I personally am not on the Remedy Hype Train. Hell, I'm not even riding the Sam Lake train, although I like the guy. Max Payne 2 in my opinion was a good game but it has a straight-up bad story, no other way to put it. And Alan Wake, although a quality title, earns the "Most boring game everyone seems to adore" badge from me.

However I still respect Remedy enourmously and that respect comes from my love for their very first title, Max Payne.

Having beaten the Dead on Arrival mode and the New York Minute mode back to back in one sitting just now I can safely say, that this game has to be preserved, cherished, respected, perhaps even studied. This might be a lighting in a bottle, but it still remains to be the most consistent, stylish, ageless and exciting experiences ever. The simple story, the writing that doesn't miss a beat, the Bullet time and the shootdodges. Everything is …

The simple story, the writing that doesn't miss a beat, the Bullet time and the shootdodges. Everything is perfect, fits right in, almost like a math equation or some formula.

And last, but not least, the graphic novel parts.

enter image description here

This is what separates MP from the rest. Obviously used as a crutch for not having the budget to do proper high quality cutscenes, this way of telling the story, coupled with James McCaffrey's performance, is not just memorable, it's iconic.

The humour and the camp is yet another very distinct element of the game, practically lost in the sequel and brought back to some degree (perhaps accidentally) in MP3.

The italian mobsters are hilarious, top notch, proper "guido"-voice over delivers.

To conclude, this is a must play for anyone who takes video games even halfway seriusly. Whatever you've been told, "it didn't age well, it's been surpassed, it too hard", ignore all of that noise.

I salute Remedy, this is a work of art, a perfect storm, a perfect game, it does everything it sets out to do and then some. Play it.

If you like shooters at all, this is a must play

It only occurred to me how good this game is until after some time had passed and I got to look at the game's sequel (which is still a fantastic game, just not as fantastic as this).

What really nailed it home for me is this question: in the history of shooting games? What game had a cooler character? None. None at all.

Max has a personality. He suffers (big time), and while the game is an early example of cinematic approaches to shooting games, no game yet has had a more fleshed out and interesting character. It's like comparing a really good movie's writing to a video game, the feeling of cinema in this shooter makes all other attempts seem feeble and trivial.

Max Payne, one of New York's finest with the biggest mobster body count in history, comes home to find his wife and infant daughter murdered by junkies high on some new designer drug.

While investigating the case his partner is shot in the back and Max is framed for it. With nothing left to lose Max Payne's sets out, during the worst winter a century, on a quest for revenge that starts with mobsters, drug pushers, and eventually moves up to uncovers a huge conspiracy. The narration manages to be most dreadful dark and silly without either getting boring or cringey.

To nail home just how cool the writing is here's a sample.

The factory went up in a firey inferno behind me. All my leads were dead, turned to smoke and dust. I had lost my way. I hadn't slept in a million years. I felt thin as death. I'd been living on an endless supply of week-old doughnuts. They were fuel for this crazy furnace inside my head. I couldn't remember when I had last seen the sun. I was on a permanent graveyard shift.

Every line is consistently this cool. Visual Novels do not have prose this good and those games are nothing BUT writing. And the writing is never disconnected from what you actually do in the levels. It's a revenge story, which means that a lot of mobsters are going to get riddled with bullets, and boy do you have plenty of motivation to do it (not just from the story either!).

It's one of the few games where the most cinematic way of playing is also the most effective. The bullet-time stuff is awesome and as you get better at the game you will find yourself playing less offensive, with less reliance on cover or slow approaches. There's also a big incentive to get good. Bullet-time isn't a crutch, enemies are aggressive enough so you need it, and the resource is scarce enough so you'll want to kill as many enemies as you can in it's brief duration (especially when doing the 'shoot dodge').

The game is also pretty tough by shooting standards. If you don't save scum you'll find yourself constantly dying on stages and needing to develop a tactic for every room. And there's plenty of room for different shooting tactics: popping out of cover or going in guns blazing both work in almost any situation. You've got around a dozen guns which all have their uses giving you plenty of options. It sure puts to shame other shooters where 90% of the shooting is just using different AR/SMG, differentiated only by minor trade offs in accuracy/fire speed, and hardly ever touch the pistol of shotgun. You might use 3+ weapons in a single shoot out, in fact you'll HAVE to master them all since you don't have enough ammo to only stick to one or two. The gun effects are also very well done, they feel good to shot with and there's lots of nice detail like how magazines remain on the ground after a reload. Enemies also fly back dramatically when shot and have great little quotes while fighting and dying which adds just yet more style points. And the game is a string of these fantastic shoot-outs without bogging you down with an infinitude of cutscenes, annoying scenario, or having you run around grabbing petty collectibles.

It's where the old arcadey shooters like Duke Nukem eclipse with the cinematic approach of the new school shooters. Bringing the best of both without the weaknesses of either.

If there's one fault this doesn't do fantastic it's the environments. They are not bad and there is plenty of variety but they lack detail (even by the standards of early 3D environments). If this game had a remaster that addressed that it would easily be the best shooter ever made. As it stands now it's only top 10 or so =p
