New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe isn't a terrible 2D platformer, but WOW was I bored all throughout every single level* I played. I think I might just hate the style of the "New" Super Mario games. New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe isn't a terrible 2D platformer, but WOW was I bored all throughout every single level* I played. I think I might just hate the style of the "New" Super Mario games. The physics never feels quite right to me. The art style and presentation is as boring as can be. And the general design of the levels always felt so... rote and perfunctory. The thing I hated most of all though was the music. I absolutely can't stand the soundtrack for this one -- it felt even more preschool-style grating than Yoshi's Crafted World. Every track is bwah-bweh-bwuh bwuh-bwuh-bwuh BA! BA! bweh-bweh-bwuh... BA-BA BA! Just kill me.
I also think the co-op gameplay is bad since the characters bounce off each other. Rayman Origins/Legends was much smarter by avoiding this, so co-op is actually fun to play in those. But still, it's not like NSMBU is an unplayable mess, and there is a rather good deal of content. I also thought the "catch the psychotic rabbit creature" challenges were a nice change of pace (literally, ha ha). What is it with psychotic rabbit creatures in Mario games this past decade by the way? There's the one in this, and those hideous Rabbids+Mario games, and also there's those very similar-looking evil rabbits in Odyssey.
(*There was actually one level I liked a bit, and that's the one that looked like Van Gogh's Starry Night painting. The stage lasted a good 40 seconds and was extremely basic in design, but at least it looked different from every other stage in the game.)

It was nice playing through it this again. I wish the load times were a bit faster though.

What a thoroughly disappointing game. The product of the clear influence of two of the best platformers ever made Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, this game is a pale shadow of the two. I honestly can’t believe that the Wii U birthed one of the best Mario games ever made and also gave us this mess.

Movement feels really odd in this game. There’s just something that feels off. Like Mario weighs the wrong amount or he slides just a bit too much. I haven’t quite put my finger on it but it feels wrong. I suppose it’s partially because every expectation I have, built upon years of playing Mario games, seems to be thwarted by …
Movement feels really odd in this game. There’s just something that feels off. Like Mario weighs the wrong amount or he slides just a bit too much. I haven’t quite put my finger on it but it feels wrong. I suppose it’s partially because every expectation I have, built upon years of playing Mario games, seems to be thwarted by this game. The game throws visual elements and level design at me that is reminiscent of older Mario games but the way everything works contradicts things that made sense in previous games. Why does Yoshi not leave the level with me? Why is the wing suit such a finicky useless thing and why can’t I use it to attack enemies? How many enemies must baby Yoshi eat?
I also really don’t enjoy the art style and dislike the fact that the game feels like an amalgam of several better Mario games yet never excels in the ways those previous games did. This game feel absolutely soulless.

Much like New Super Mario Bros Wii, I recommend playing this one with multiple people for the best experience.

What better time to finally pick it up than during the lead up to Mario’s 35th birthday?

Realizing I should mark this guy as played because there is a separate entry for New Super Luigi U. We've moved on to that game as a family and are still having fun.

I enjoyed Mario U, but it definitely felt a little bland a lot of the time. I wish they did more with the baby Yoshi mechanic. It's so very cool but they are so rare and when you get them, so easy to lose.
