Oddly enjoyable

Okay, this game is very enigmatic. It’s incredibly dense, and barely explains itself at all. It takes a while to figure out what anything does, and seems impossible to truly master. But the great artwork, music, and what I could grasp of the gameplay loop sucked me in anyways.

I do think the game could afford a bit more clarity, because while I had a good time, I never felt like I was improving. I rarely knew how to strategize, and saw no path to improvement. Idk if it is just me, but the game still remains pretty shrouded in a mysterious fog of pixels and numbers and stats…. So eventually, I kinda stopped picking it up.

Cool art direction but very repetitive

I really like the idea of genre blend and overall art direction, the core gameplay loop itself feels great. But you simply cannot offer such a little variety of enemies, cards, items and possibilities in a roguelite game and then have the audacity to stretch this content by simply giving it away more slowly. Loop Hero is yet another indie game that doesn't manage the inherent roguelike flaw well. It's a boring repetition-loop.

Loop Hero adding another one to the list: 'ruined by roguelike'

Feo pero con personalidad
This review is for the PC (Microsoft Windows) version

Loop Hero is one of those rare games that feels both simple and deeply strategic. At its core, it’s a game about placing tiles, leveling up, and surviving endless loops, but it’s also a game that challenges you to think carefully about every decision you make. I initially picked it up as a way to take a break from more complex games, but I quickly found myself hooked. It’s now a staple in my gaming library, available on my Xbox, phone, and Steam for whenever I need a quick, satisfying gaming session.

Gameplay Mechanics: The gameplay in "Loop Hero" is deceptively simple yet incredibly engaging. Your character automatically travels along a preset path, fighting enemies and collecting resources. As the player, your role is to strategically place tiles around the path to provide buffs, spawn enemies, or create new terrain.

  • Pacing: The game strikes a perfect balance between relaxing and intense. Most of the time, it’s a laid-back experience, but the decisions you make—like where to place tiles or when to retreat—can quickly ramp up the tension.
  • Intuitive Mechanics: The mechanics are easy to grasp. Each tile has a clear description of its effects, so it’s straightforward to understand what …

Each tile has a clear description of its effects, so it’s straightforward to understand what they do. However, the real challenge comes from figuring out the best placement and combinations to maximize your character’s power while managing the risks of tougher enemies.
  • Standout Element: What I love most is how such a simple concept—placing tiles—can have such a profound impact on the game. A single decision can either make your character unstoppable or lead to their downfall. It’s a constant balancing act that keeps you engaged.

While the game doesn’t hold your hand, it does provide enough information to get you started. The rest is trial and error, which I found to be part of the fun.

Graphics and Art Style: The pixel art aesthetic of Loop Hero is a perfect fit for the game. It has a retro feel that’s nostalgic without feeling outdated. The visuals are clean and easy to understand, which is crucial for a game where tile placement and resource management are key.

  • Clarity: The art style ensures that everything is visually clear, from the tiles you place to the enemies you encounter. It’s easy to see what’s happening at all times, which helps keep the gameplay smooth and intuitive.

Sound and Music: The soundtrack in Loop Hero complements the gameplay well, enhancing the overall mood of the game. While I didn’t pay much attention to the music, it subtly added to the experience without becoming repetitive or distracting.

  • Sound Effects: The sound effects are functional and fit the retro aesthetic, but there weren’t any standout tracks or effects that stuck with me.

Challenge and Replayability: One of Loop Hero’s greatest strengths is its balance between being laid-back and requiring strategic thinking. It’s a game that you can pick up for a quick session or sink hours into without feeling overwhelmed.

  • Progression Systems: The game encourages replayability through its progression systems. As you upgrade your village, you unlock new tiles with unique abilities, adding more depth to the gameplay. However, you’re limited in how many tiles you can bring into each loop, which forces you to make strategic choices before each run.

  • Multiple Playstyles: There’s no single “optimal” strategy in Loop Hero. The way you play depends on your goals. If you want to farm resources, you can take a slower, more methodical approach. If you’re aiming for quick runs, you can focus on maximizing damage and efficiency. The flexibility in playstyles keeps the game fresh.

Story and World-Building: The story in "Loop Hero" is present but not intrusive. It provides just enough context to give you a sense of purpose, but it doesn’t demand your full attention. In summary the story is about a Lich who has thrown the world into a timeless loop and plunged its endless chaos and it's up to you to end it by gaining powers in the form of card/ tiles, placing the around the board until you defeat the lich and its minions.

  • Narrative Hook: The game’s premise—that the world has been destroyed and you’re rebuilding it one loop at a time—is intriguing, but it’s not the main focus. Instead, the gameplay takes center stage, and the story serves as a backdrop to your journey.

Platform Experience: I’ve played "Loop Hero" on Xbox, my phone, and recently purchased it on Steam to play on my Steam Deck while traveling. Across all platforms, the experience is consistent. The controls are simple and translate well to both console and mobile, making it a great game to pick up and play anywhere.

Personal Take: What I love most about "Loop Hero" is how accessible it is. It’s a game I can pick up whenever I’m ready, and I never feel like I’ve lost progress or forgotten how to play. The simplicity of the mechanics means I can jump back in at any time and figure things out on the fly. While the game isn’t lacking in any major way, I would love to see more development or updates, especially considering it’s been out for a few years now. Expanding the game with new tiles, mechanics, or story elements would only make it better.

Summary: Loop Hero is a fantastic game that combines simplicity with depth. It’s perfect for when you need a break from more complex games but still want something engaging and challenging. The retro aesthetic, intuitive mechanics, and strategic gameplay make it a must-play for fans of roguelikes, strategy games, or anyone looking for a unique gaming experience.

Recommendation: I’d 100% recommend "Loop Hero" to anyone looking for a game to add to their playlist or phone. It’s great for casual gamers who want something relaxing yet strategic, as well as for strategy enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting with different playstyles. Whether you’re playing for 10 minutes or 10 hours, Loop Hero is a game that keeps you entertained.

I was really surprised to find that this game didn't click with me. Maybe I just didn't have the patience to experiment, but I found it a bit too opaque to really understand how the systems work and how to make my builds. Currently my path to beating the first boss feels lik it's just grinding loops, which isn't very fun. I think the game leans a bit too much on the "idle" side for me since I was playing on xbox and not as a thiing on the side.

Trying to decide what "big" (read: expensive) game to get next. Dragon's Dogma II? Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island? SaGa Emerald Beyond?

Really enjoying some indie games lately. I don't get a chance to play many of them. Been playing some Loop Hero lately to pass the time, and wow, I didn't realize how cool that game is.

Edit: removed a few words because English hard.

Major points for the CRT filter and font options. Still can't believe Square Enix did a Pixel "Remaster" of the sprite based Final Fantasy games and not only did the sprites and colors worse but didn't even offer options to fix the font while also charging a lot re-releases that also lacked content compared to other ports.

Just started making my way to the third boss. It's very difficult but I can feel myself getting closer to the end. Very engaging core loop and it's been fun to just pick up and play for a few minutes.

Weird game, an awkward mix of genres. It requires too much attention to be a true idle game, but it isn't engaging enough to be a regular game. Still, I find the story to be interesting, so I'm compelled to finish it. Maybe with a bit of cheating to make my experience more bearable.

Really liking this game so far. It definitely falls into the "just one more..." category of games. I sit down for what I plan to be 30 minutes. Next thing I know, it's 3 hours later.

Pacing can be up and down, but once you find a system that works for you, you can start to farm resources pretty easily and progress rather quickly.

Story is pretty interesting and art is beautiful.

Stopped playing because my save file got corrupted.

++ Interesting concept, it's the equivalent of a clicker game where you actually have some decisions to make ++ Fun combos/interactions between the cards. ++ Thematically appropriate story -- Few interactions between the cards -- Figuring some of the interactions out can be a chore, as they are counterintuitive. -- It is not always clear what stats do just from their description. -- The GRIND is ENDLESS. Losing 40-70% of your loot + all items you collected is to punishing -- Items are very boring
