Demon's Souls is just a delight. I love how you get to see what has carried forward all these years to Elden Ring and the changes they made. I was worried I wasn't gonna like it but everything is just a lot of fun.

After a simple boss such as the Phalanx, you stumble upon a bridge A red dragon appears. It's fire may kill you in one hit, but you can call yourself a lucky bastard if you somehow make it across. Going down into the interiors of the bridge, the area is dim. The onle NPC you meet has lost all hope. Everyone is dead. The halls are narrow as you roll through every barricade. Shreds of light only appear from the crevices of the walls. A pack of dogs will pound on you the moment the scent of your blood enters their nostrils. You hear heartbeats of someone or something. Could there be another person or could it be your character? The final stretch is trekking across the bridge. Your obstacles are the dragon, and a bunch of guards ready to kill you. The dragon is a pain to get through, but however, using your wits, you could use the dragon to kill them and to proceed to the next boss. Entering through the fog, a the knight the size of a tower surpasses you in size. Enemies surround you with crossbows from the high ground. They will not relent to fire at you.

Suffocating, oppressive, claustrophobic. This is what describes Demon's Souls' atmosphere.

In preparation for Elden Ring, I've decided to look back through all the Souls games and give them some awards that I just made up!

Today, Demon's Souls wins for Best Hub World:

so the world might be mended

bel gioco di from software, all'epoca una hidden gem: difficile, cupo e appagante. lineare nella sua struttura a livelli, con un hub centrale. giocato su PS3 e rimane eccezionale. Voto: 9.5/10

Got absolutely destroyed by the tutorial boss, but otherwise haven't died once, although I'm also a really cautious player. There's always a ton of grass if you look hard enough. I like the oppressive aesthetic of the world, it's so dreary. It kinda melds into every single enemy, which might be a turn off to some but I find it really helps the atmosphere. It's soulless but it's the point, I think.

Phalanx, for example, has little to no soul to it as far as I know. It's just a mass of shields and spears, and there's very little color to it, save for a light color in the middle, behind all of it... wish the boss fight was any good, though. I found it really boring to just run and cut. The problem is that Hoplites are introduced to you before the boss itself, which makes the boss' puzzle ridiculously easy. You already learn "oh get behind them", now it's "run around and murder". The only difference is you have to be quicker on your feet, I guess. Also didn't expect one area in Demon's to take so long! This is my first Souls experience but good lord. I also haven't gotten any spells? Is there a place to get them?

I've also just been informed Phalanx has lore that I might be able to figure out if I didn't leave one Hoplite alive because I'm used to bosses going apeshit when they're the only one left in a plethora of other games. I was worried about an enrage thing.

Klassikkosarjan kasvukivut

Demon's Souls näyttää hyvin Souls-sarjan kasvukipuja.

In a way, Demon's Souls rebooted video games. Its development and release is a fascinating story fraught with hurdles and the game was only released through dumb luck and oversight, finding success through pure word-of-mouth. It was not a game of its time but it ended up being the perfect game for its time. In general, video games were moving towards a focus on streamlined mechanics and bombastic action set-pieces that were designed to keep gamers entertained but not necessarily challenged. With a strong sense of artistry and atmosphere, Demon's Souls instead harkened to an era of tough-as-nails gaming that had passed and yet somehow revealed itself to be a path to the future for the industry. Even in the 2020’s, the design decisions found in Demon's Souls resonate through video games at large. This game simultaneously invented and perfected a certain type of challenging action RPG featuring asymmetrical online encounters, mechanics that have crept into countless other games. The sense of accomplishment one receives from progressing through this game is second-to-none. The journey is dauntingly perilous and not for those who have little patience, but as the player chips away at obscure systems and cryptic riddles, the beauty of discovery and enchanting mystery begin to emerge. Finally finding oneself on the other side of the game's harrowing passage through darkness and despair feels like a power-fantasy in the truest sense. From Software certainly refined and improved this formula in their later titles, but Demon's Souls is where the magic first took root. The legacy of this ultimate underdog and all-time great has never been more obvious.

Demon's Souls Review 9.1/10

Overall I was surprised by how well this game held up 10 years later. It’s just as good as the later games, if not better. Just avoid playing as a mage if you’re looking for that same level of challenge. Below is my video review

I've only beaten one boss and seen one other so far, but I'm feeling that desire to explore the world that these games are known for.

What are your spooktober games fellow Grouveeans?

I feel like we're slowly building some groundswell for this mythical Demon's Souls remaster that I've been dreaming of. I keep having vivid recurring dreams that I'm trapped in the Tower of Latria. Anyway for any fans who haven't played Demon's Souls, this video gives a nice overview and also shows off the improved framerate/res of the emulated version.

Seems like the new version of RPCS3 must have included some performance/stability fixes. I also used the Vulkan GPU setting which seemed to fix most of my troubles. Runs pretty smooth although it takes a little while to load in the shaders or something the first few times I ran it. Seems to run smoother each time I load in. I haven't tried any of that 4k 60fps nonsense, I don't think my PC could handle it, but will be fun to try that out in the future.

I keep having weird dreams about Demon's Souls like I'm trapped in the Tower of Latria. Something about the atmosphere and environment of Demon's Souls which really soaks into the subconscious. I'm thinking about doing a "pure black world tendency" playthrough, apparently these horrifying blob creatures spawn into your world if you play under these conditions:

Some of the best level design and environments in a Souls game, but the difficulty is far greater than any other FromSoftware game and it keeps me from completely finishing this game. I will at some point, and will possibly give a better rating.

The lore is pretty awesome too. I like how you basically have to find out everything yourself and put the 'pieces' together.

Though I must admit, Dark Souls is better, but Demon's Souls is my personal favorite out of the two.
