Today, four days after its release, we finally got a review code for Horizon Forbidden West.

Sony used to send us their games weeks in advance so the review could be ready on embargo day. I don't know what's happening but I don't like they think latin american publications are not worthy of consideration.

Closer to a 4.5 star for me, but I have to give it the edge for its brilliant, beautiful vision of the Mountain West--a landscape dear to my heart.

Because HFW was designed for PS4 and PS5, the PS5 still has loading screens for things like fast travelling. However the loading time on PS5 is instant, so the screen is just a prompt to the player to press X to continue. Even though I've been playing on PS5 for a while, I'm still conditioned to wait out a loading screen, so as a result I usually pick up my phone, or I put my controller down and wait. Yet the game is waiting on me to press X rather, when I assume I'm waiting on the game to load. It's kind of funny how years of waiting has conditioned a certain response and how one tiny decision, like presenting what looks like a loading screen and forcing the player to press X to continue instead of simply taking you to your destination in game, triggers that conditioned response.

Machine Strike player: "No one wants to play Machine Strike?"

Me: that's right buddy, no one wants to play a game designed solely to pad out the content of another game.

I understand why they separated multiple use weapons into single use, allowing greater upgradeability and better coil management, but the byproduct is there are three to four times as many weapons to micromanage yet we don’t have any additional weapon quick select slots during combat. Guerrilla Games released Horizon Zero Dawn

Critics and players: “HZD is brilliant, you don’t climb Ubisoft style fixed towers to reveal an area of the map, you climb a mobile platform called a Tallneck. What innovation!”

Guerrilla Games: “hold my beer!”, launches Horizon Forbidden West with Tallnecks and Ubisoft style fixed towers.

It’s frustrating, there are quests I can’t seem to turn in. Often if you complete a side quest such as the postmaster or hunting ground quest without having the quest selected, you finish the quest without triggering it as complete. It’s frustrating, there are quests I can’t seem to turn in. Often if you complete a side quest such as the postmaster or hunting ground quest without having the quest selected, you finish the quest without triggering it as complete. And even after you complete it again, with the quest selected, triggering all steps in the quest, the quest remains active in your log. I’ve done pit master quests twice without triggering completion. And I don’t want to complete hunting ground tasks twice because they are tedious and fiddly.

Ugh, Machine Strike. I really loath mini-games like Machine Strike. I sincerely hope nothing useful is locked behind this mini-game because I’m 99.99% sure I’m not going to touch this thing for the rest of the game.

I’ve not been one to use gyro aiming in past but I have to say that I’m really enjoying gyro aiming in this game. It works exceptionally well for quickly pinpointing things like canisters to detach.

Look, this game looks absolutely stunning and it’s fun to play, but I can’t help but feel that it is exceptionally conventional. Maybe it’s because I just played Returnal and I want to see a shift from the PS4 era style of game that plays like Tomb Raider or Uncharted, or maybe I’m growing less enamoured with Sony’s prestige game formula. Regardless there’s something decidedly safe about the way this game feels and I think that if “more HZD” is what you’re after you’ll be very happy. But I think I want to see more risks taken, games that don’t necessarily all fit the same proven formula, games that push me and/or push the format in compelling ways.

Also, was platforming in the first game this clunky? There’s just something off labour climbing and jumping ledges, especially since a backward eject isn’t mapped to the jump button. Maybe it’s because I was just playing Immortals Fenyx Rising but moving back to the climbing mechanics of AC style games from a decade ago does feel a bit awkward.

I know I’m not saying anything new here, but Sony really has codified their own type of action-adventure game through very specific shared elements, covering everything from general narrative structure, to a similar gritty aesthetic to the mechanical. So while games like The Last of Us II, God of War or the Horizon series retain their own identities they are unified through these common approaches in a way that makes them feel connected. Despite differences, these common elements pop up in game after game and are immediately recognizable. This type of unifying design is common in games from a single studio such as Ubisoft, where many systems and elements are shared across games (AC, Far Cry, Immortals, etc.). And of course unifying elements exist across games from different studios thanks to genre codification. But I do think Sony has achieved this across disparate studios in a way that makes playing any of them feel familiar as long as you’ve played one in a way that we don’t see in games from other studios owned by the same parent company. On the one hand it’s nice because you don’t have to relearn every system. But on the other it’s what makes games like Returnal feel as fresh as they do because they buck Sony’s codified elements.

Anyway all this because I came to a workbench in Horizon Forbidden West. Good lord, Sony studios love workbenches!
