Typing of the Dead: Overkill is a surprisingly fun upgrade to the Overkill formula, upping the challenge in some respects while keeping the crass grindhouse humor that made Overkill such a memorable entry.

The plot of House of the Dead: Overkill is kept identical (and the original House of the Dead is actually playable as an extra feature), where Special Agent G and Isaac Washington team up to stop crime boss Papa Caesar and his army of mutant zombies. Grindhouse references, motherfuckers aplenty, and vulgar humor comes through from the original - I was surprised how much of it actually held up and was actually still funny after all this time.

Mechanics for shooting zombies and fending off attacks are now typing prompts - in all modes except the "Hardcore" mode the spaces and punctuation largely don't matter, meaning the player can type for speed. There are some minigames to test out waves of enemies and whatnot but the story mode will likely be the most meat for the game to offer. Various DLC is available to ensure the player has plenty of silly phrases and dictionaries to go through for variety (there are a LOT) while the original game also has the DLC levels from the complete edition of the original House of the Dead Overkill.

The visual and audio style is appropriately murky and grungy, with plenty of blood, guts, and explosions to be had. The music is surprisingly catchy, with plenty of guitar riffs, some techno beats, and plenty of voice samples of the crazy quotes in the game to go through. The artistic quality seems a little cheap at times (apparently there were quick turnaround times for both the original game and this) but it's a distinct style that separates this game from the other House of the Dead titles.

Typing of the Dead: Overkill adds a lot of fun and challenge to an already memorable entry in the House of the Dead series. If you needed a little more difficulty in your Overkill run, feel free to give this one a shot!

“You can’t negotiate with a zombie. They have only one impulse – that’s to eat us or our brains.” -Stephen Graham Jones

.

There is absolutely no more enjoyable way to practice and improve your typing skills than by playing Typing of the Dead, not that I have ever encountered anyway. I’m a weirdo and always used to enjoy the typing games in school; this takes the satisfaction of completing different typing challenges like those games and merges it with the campy and grotesque rail shooter that most of us know from arcades, The House of the Dead.

What drew me to it was a burst of retro collecting obsession when I was trying to find as many cool games to add to my list for the Sega Dreamcast as I could. I saw one that really caught my eye which was obviously the original Typing of the Dead which you could play by getting a keyboard for the system. I became very fascinated by the idea of killing zombies by typing and began looking around for other versions of it.

I was overjoyed to find that they had this version for Steam so that I did not have to track down a Sega Dreamcast keyboard and a copy of the game which I am sure would have been much more costly than what the key for the game on Steam cost me. That cost by the way is only $20 for the game or $25 for the complete edition with all DLC. If this is a genre you are into it is definitely worth it.

The main story is short at about 5-6 hours but there is plenty of replayability there with the collectibles that you find through the levels such as 3D models, concept art, and comic book pages. You could also crank up the difficulty or download a completely different library of words to type from the Steam Workshop. You get all of that as well as the full game The House of the Dead: Overkill with it. You just select it from the menu and you can play the game as it was originally created.

Het spel in kwestie: The Typing of the Dead: Overkill.

Alleen doet The Typing of the Dead dat niet.

I love it's sense of style, but the pacing of the game is really bad for a Typing version. The original Typing of the Dead was fast and frantic; this version is just tedious and slow.
