I originally came across Ranko Tsukigime (I'll abreviate it as that for brevity's sake) in a video that talked about obscure PS3 games, and was immediately intrigued by its sudden artstyle shifts. After finishing it, I can say it definitely did not disappoint.

The gameplay consists mostly of an horizontal running game with beat-em up elements, with the idea being that you should keep your speed as much as possible, or you'll die. However, the game will also sometimes turn into a shoot'em up, a wrestling game.. And that's what makes it great.

By regularly switching its rules and its artstyle along the way, Ranko Tsukigime makes for its short runtime (an hour and 50 minutes almost) and keeps itself fresh, never being too annoying and making sure to keep the pace going and the player entertained. Even though a few moments are sort of tedious, they end up buried under the amount of fun and passion that's been put in this odd little game.

Very fun, definitely recommended, though its runtime does mean paying it at full price is a hard sell. Emulating it may be wiser.
