This was the first game I ever played (that wasnt a flash game) and as such I can rate this game very objectively an 11/10

I thought I had 100% completed this game as a kid, but apparently there's a secret challenge mode that I didn't heard about until recently. Guess I've gotta do another run at some point...

This was my Super Mario World or Super Mario Bros 3. I grew up with this game. In my opinion, 2D Mario at its peak, just solid level design, fun movement, and a thoughtful package in one. The minigames and Mario vs Luigi were also fun additions for when playing with other kids.

I haven't played Super Mario World in decades, but I got a lot of nostalgia for it from this title, and I would bet that it was the primary influence of this one. NSMB is a very pure 2D Mario platformer. There are almost no gimmicks. For what it's worth, having beaten Donkey Kong Country recently, I found that the difficulty in some of these levels were on par with it. NSMB is no joke of a Mario title, although it's not agonizingly difficult either. Pits are abundant and Mario is pretty fragile as he is in most of his games. I appreciated that each level seemed to have a new mechanic, many of which were revitalized from previous titles, but others seemed completely new (green cheep cheeps that briefly follow you in water levels for example). It's hard for me to pin down this game for some reason despite its straightforwardness. It has a lot of neat features, like the ability to reserve a power-up. This resolves the annoyance of finding a fire flower when you're already equipped with one. The game includes some new power-ups as well, like the relatively useless (IMO) blue shell power which turns you into a Koopa that heat seeks itself into bottomless pits, the mini mushroom which transforms the physics so they're very floaty, makes you small and weak, and allows you to traverse some inaccessible areas. I almost liked this power, but I wish you could take a hit in this form since you are very fragile. The giant mushroom was the coolest power. It's a lot of fun becoming OP for a few moments. It's like picking up a star on steroids, and you can drop it on the screen whenever you want if you have one in reserve, which leads to some satisfying moments like instantly defeating Bowser Jr. The bosses in NSMB are all quite easy, but they become progressively difficult as the game continues. The last boss fight against Bowser and Bowser Jr. was actually quite fun. Other than that, I really enjoyed the simple game-of-chance 1UP bonus levels and the overall simple but effective presentation. No dialogue or cut scenes, just a map where you go from one level to the next. I didn't love how you had to beat some bosses using the mini mushroom to unlock an entirely new world. You can miss worlds 4 and 7 and have to go back and beat the boss again as mini Mario to unlock it. It's not a huge hassle, but it's a little unnecessary. I ended up skipping world 7 as I was pretty satisfied with the other 7 worlds upon beating the game.

The last two games in this retrospective, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Yoshi's Island DS killed me. Two games in a row where I did not enjoy myself.
So that made playing New Super Mario Bros. feel so good.
Nintendo before 2006 didn't have a 2D Mario game made from the ground up since Super Mario World. At the time, 2D Platformers were brushed aside since 3D was considered the new norm while 2D was a relic of the past. However, Nintendo made the bold decision to make a NEW 2D Mario game for their EXTREMELY successful handheld system, the Nintendo DS. This game... was HUGE.
It introduced many people to 2D platformers and brought back people who haven't touched Mario since his departure from 2D. This game went on to be one of the highest-selling video games ever made, selling over 30 million copies. It still holds up 16 years later
New Super Mario Bros. takes elements from older 2D Mario games while also reinventing the series.
The story and presentation are extremely generic but it does the job. Peach is once again kidnapped and Mario has to save her. Do you see? Generic! The most unique thing I can think of when it comes to the story is that Bowser Jr. is mostly the main villain in this.
The game looks pretty good. Obviously, it is a bit dated but the charm is still there. Is it kinda bland? Yeah. Definitely feels like a vanilla Mario world... But I understand why they would play it safe since it had been so long at the time. The music is also pretty generic but no track in the game is bad... Especially the Castle theme. This game does have mini-games and you can even play as Luigi if you hold L and R on the file select screen which I find really cool.
The game controls and feels great and I love how progression is handled. Each level contains 3 Star Coins. Star Coins can be spent on the overworld to reach Toad houses and bonus levels. Some Star Coins are super easy to find while others might take some time. Some levels contain secret exits which can lead you to bonus levels or even cannons that can allow you to skip one of the 8 total worlds in the game (6 are required)
There are also the power-ups you would expect such as the mushroom, the fire flower, and the star. However, New Super Mario Bros. introduces 3 new power-ups.
3 Power-ups I... Don't really like to be honest.
First, you got the Mini Mushroom. The Mini Mushroom turns Mario well... small... He dies in one hit like in his normal form but he can jump way higher, fall slower, and run on water. I don't like it. You never get excited when you gotta use it because you only ever will be using it to access secrets for star coins or exits. It's not an item I look forward to using.
The second item is the Blue shell. The blue shell gives Mario better movement while swimming and also allows him to get in the shell while running... Which is why I hate it. The shell ricochets off walls and is super hard to control. So you are forced to move slowly which really sucks
Finally, we got the item the whole game was marketed around... The Mega Mushroom. The Mega Mushroom turns Mario into a giant and allows him to speed through levels destroying everything in his path. The first time you use it is really cool but this is the definition of a gimmick. You hardly get to use it and I personally only ever used it during boss battles. The reason being is that the Mega Mushroom can destroy paths to star coins and other secrets. So using it is actually not practical in the slightest
New Super Mario Bros. is a game I actively enjoyed 100% and although it has a very generic (yet charming) presentation and underwhelming new items, this game is a triumph in what 2D games are capable of and it is one Mario game I would definitely play again

That being said, the original New Super Mario Bros. doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. It feels like just a new great 2d Mario game with fun levels, cool mechanics, and the same song and dance story everyone knows. I greatly appreciate that this game at its core is no different from “Super Mario Bros.” or “Super Mario World” and stays so true to the 2d Mario formula everyone knows while also keeping things fresh. That also being said this was the start of the fatigue that came with these games. After this, all the games in the New Super Mario Bros. series felt the exact same. Plus this game can feel a bit wonky at times but overall it’s incredibly solid and I would highly recommend buying it.

My only real "complaint" is the animation of Mario's character. When walking, Mario flails his arms off to the side, which looks really bizarre. He also moves his arms and legs way too quickly for the speed he moves at. They should have kept a similar character model from the earlier games.
Otherwise, this is a solid 2D Mario game. It plays like a combination of Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3. There are tons of new obstacles you can interact with such as moving platforms, tilting mushrooms, and swinging ropes, which really add to the variety of gameplay. The game never gets boring and is just the perfect length. It's probably a little bit easier than the previous games, but it still offers a good challenge.
There is very little exposition in New Super Mario Bros. You really just pick up and play. This makes the game feel less "epic" or "grand" as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. The gameplay is certainly there, but it doesn't feel like you are on a big magical adventure like the older games.
New Super Mario Bros. isn't quite as good as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, but it's still a fun return to the classic Mario formula. I'm looking forward to trying out its sequels.

It's okay. I'd put it below the original Super Mario Bros (which I gave a solid 3), so I'm giving this an okay 2. Voto: 7.8/10

Last night I got the D pad and buttons working better for my DS Lite. A year or so ago someone I worked with found out I enjoy video games and gave me a very used pink DS Lite.
I played around with it a bit but the D pad was not very responsive and I stuck it on the shelf to just admire it's beauty because heck I like to collect consoles and games whether or not I play them.
A couple weeks ago my wife wanted to play Mario and she experienced the same thing with the unresponsive buttons. In the past I've managed to get NES controllers to work by opening them and cleaning off contacts with rubbing alcohol and blowing out dust with compressed air. This method worked pretty well for the DS Lite and I got the buttons to work better. They're still a little tough to press but I made Mario playable!

A nod to old-school Mario with some additions, such as the Mega and Mini Mushrooms. This doesn't have the same quality as classic Mario games, but it was still a good adventure.
