Played on loan from my coworker using her DS. I beat the main story and most of Etna mode. I did not like this game much and stopped playing before beating Etna mode. I had Laharl using bows and Etna using spears. I used mostly the story characters. I only remember 1 generic character; a cleric I made at the beginning who was actually quite powerful. I believe I also had a couple other low level clerics that I brought along sometimes to be heal bots.

The core gameplay is quite good; I do love tactical RPGs and Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all time favorite games, but this game goes way overboard with tedious grinding. The sheer extent that you can go to for powering up equipment in the item world and dealing with reincarnation and parents; it is exhausting. I did manage to get Laharl and Etna (at least, maybe others) some support magic and my cleric got some offensive magic. The difficulty of the story missions ramped up very quickly, so grinding and powering up was mandatory. I tried to do a little as possible to just barely scrape by the missions and got sick of it all before I finished Etna mode.

On top of the tedious gameplay, the story, characters and setting are too silly to take seriously. I know that is a big part of the game but it did not make me invested in playing. I had a hard time liking or caring about any of the characters or what was going on. To me the game seems like a boring slog that is tedious for the sake of being tedious. I give it 6/10.
