Alien³ was released after the Alien 3 film. After success on the Super Nintendo and Genesis platforms, the game was built and ported to other systems, including the Commodore 64 and Game Gear. The game is set on the world of the film, Fury 161, but the gameplay has more in common with the film Aliens, throwing wave after wave of enemies at the player.

Beat NES version on Easy at 40 fps using a walkthrough. This version was a completely different game from the SNES one. I hate when different games have the same title. At the surface this was a decent run and gun platformer with ammo counts, weapon switching, and somewhat awkward diagonal up aiming. The pulse rifle was the best gun because it stunned the enemy, but it overheated and ran out of ammo way too fast. Grenade launcher was ok but the lack of stagger meant I often still got hit by an enemy before I could kill it. Flamethrower had very poor range and grenades were tough to use against fast moving aliens. I liked how pressing shoot while on a ladder automatically dropped a grenade. I hated how the screen often didn't scroll enough with the character such that I felt like I was going around blind and often did not have enough distance to react to an enemy. This possibly could have been used for a more survival horror feel if the motion tracker actually worked and if the single worst aspect of the game was not present; the time limit. I would not have needed to rigidly follow a walkthrough if not for the time limit. Games should not have time limits. Bonus score or loot for being fast sure, but not beat the time or game over. Who really cares if the prisoners die anyway? Just more aliens to kill. The game could have used better level design and greater enemy variety but it was fun enough that I could see giving it a 7/10, without the time limit.

With the time limit?

4.5/10

Completed the game. Reminds me a lot of Jurassic Park 2 and Judge Dredd only better than those two games. I really liked how three different face buttons were used for shooting the three different weapons but I did not like how "L" and "R" were used to swap weapons. They should have been used for diagonal aiming since pressing the D pad up and over tends to make you move at the same time as aiming. Gameplay was fairly decent overall but I hated the concept of having to return to the terminal to do one mission at a time. Also hated having to go back to the terminal to see the map so I made sure to keep a backup save state at the map screen. Level design could have been a lot better.

Despite the game's problems it was over all fairly good. The aliens were not much of a threat though. With some changes in the game play this could have been an amazing survival horror; it definitely has the right atmosphere for it.
