Bloody Roar 3 pits 12 outlandish combatants against each other in one of the most ambitious 3D fighting games to grace the PlayStation 2. Returning from Hudson's widely acclaimed PS1 titles are Stun, Long and Jenny, each of who brings a unique fighting skill to the arena. During each bout, players build an energy bar based on the number of successful kicks and punches they land on their opponent. As the bar fills, players can then morph their combatant into terrifying manimals from beasts such as lions and tigers to moles. The morph, in turn, unlocks a secondary control system specifically designed with each creature's combat moves and appearance in mind. In effect, this offers players two distinct combat types within one game.

Glad I finally got to play this game. Bought it years ago only to find out that my PS2 can no longer play the blue-backed discs, so I had to opt to emulate via PCSX2. I can't really compare it to Primal Fury or 4 because I just don't remember those entries very well, so most of my comparisons will be to 1 and 2 (mostly 2 since it was the immediate predecessor). Also, I like fighting games, but I'm not a competitive player so this is just going to be from a casual perspective
Pros
- Hyper beast mode seems like an interesting high-risk, high-reward mechanic.
- More beast drives. More options are a good thing.
- Nice improvement aesthetically. They took advantage of the stronger hardware and the improvements to models and textures are noticeable.
- This is more of a complaint about older fighting games than this game specifically, but this game doesn't do anything to help teach the player to play. No training mode and no in-game command list. I was too lazy to grab the instruction manual, so I never figured out how to use hyper beast or dodge.
- Music and presentation isn't as compelling as BR2 in my opinion.
- The story. First of all, there's no story mode. BR2's story mode was great because it provided context for why each fight happens rather than randomly getting into fights with everyone in the roster with no explanation. It made each character's journey feel more personal and it explained things like why Long's moveset changed, why Shina's moveset is similar to Gado, why Uriko's moveset is similar to Long's, Yugo's boxing-based moveset, and Alice's design change. In contrast, all of the character's are drawn by an outside force beyond their control and they all basically have the same goal more or less. Also, whereas BR2 felt like a continuation of BR1's story, BR3 doesn't really seem to do that as much.
- I like the character designs less. The changes from BR1 and BR2 was cool because it showed the character's growing up and maturing. Alice goes from a high-school girl to a working Nurse. From BR2 to BR3, she kinda loses that. This aspect actually gets worse later on in the series.
