Relieved to finish this game. I was looking for a cute, stress-free game, but this game had me so stressed with the collecting and the story. Relieved to finish this game. I was looking for a cute, stress-free game, but this game had me so stressed with the collecting and the story. Really wish the compass was enhanced to track all collectibles and that there weren't so many collectibles where you have one chance to get them. The gameplay is pretty boring and the collecting is a nightmare. I don't think I'll be coming back to this one.

After enjoying de Blob, I decided to give the sequel a try on my Steam Deck.

de Blob 2 boasts a number of improvements over its predecessor, both mechanically and in terms of presentation. The controls are much more reliable, the time limits are abandoned after completing a level's main missions, and the game manages the jump to the first HD console generation with substantially more detail and variety in its levels.

That said, some elements I adored in the first game have been muted in this entry. Levels feel smaller to me now because of how they're segmented, often with 2-D sections that feel like they're here because Super Mario Galaxy and Sonic Colors had them. Optional missions have been consolidated to the end of each level, which streamlines completion but makes the rhythm of the game more predictable. And the visual and aural transformation of each stage is far less noticeable as you progress.

All of these changes make de Blob 2 a more successful 3-D platformer. But in the process, it loses some of that Katamari-esque vibe I was a fan of. I like it a lot, I'd recommend it, but it falls just short of supplanting the original in my mind.

This is really a 3.5. The first half or so was really fun. The last half really dragged. Probably I would have rated it higher had I just taken a break for awhile. Some of the challenges in the latter half of the game are really freaking hard given the somewhat wonky nature of the controls.

This is really a 3.5. The first half or so was really fun. The last half really dragged. Probably I would have rated it higher had I just taken a break for awhile. Some of the challenges in the latter half of the game are really freaking hard given the somewhat wonky nature of the controls.

That said, I really enjoyed the quirky humour and the core gameplay of coloring buildings and smashing gray dudes. And the reward of watching each neighborhood explode into colour really didn't get old.
