Kero Blaster is a platform video game created by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. It was released in 2014 for PC and iOS and is the first major project of Pixel since Cave Story in 2004. The game lays a heavy emphasis on shooting and got positive reviews on both platforms. A short, free demo titled Pink Hour has been available since a month before the full game's release. In Kero Blaster, the player controls a frog working for Cat & Frog, a teleporter company. Armed with a peashooter, he has to clean the teleporters of strange black monsters. The player has to work their way through a series of linear stages, by means of running, gunning and jumping. USGamer described the gameplay as "akin to ... Contra or old-school, pre-Symphony of the Night Castlevanias." Furthermore, the game is controlled by changing direction, jumping, firing your weapon and changing your weapon. Holding down the fire button continues to fire in the direction you were facing when you started shooting. Read less

There's more to this story-driven platformer beneath the retro surface

For those who played the freeware games Pink Hour and Pink Heaven, Kero Blaster takes those prequels and blows it all into a larger scale. You play a frog who does maintenance for a company (using guns) and set out in different levels to solve problems, which happen to be parts of a bigger problem that unfolds itself along the way.

The gameplay basics are easy to learn, considering its compatibility for early console controllers, but the challenge level rises up steadily as you explore new stages and fight new enemies. What adds to the experience is the RPG elements provided by obtaining and buying new upgrades for your character and weapons. Even the coins you collect get saved if you run out of lives and have to start over each level, rewarding your persistence by allowing you to afford your game-changing upgrades.

The game story is simple on the surface, with your companions telling about your duty to fix up teleporters, but there is more to the cryptic details that add some depth on a meta-level. There's additional story to take in, once you unlock the Zangyou mode after beating the game the first time. It's fascinating to read the theories that fellow fans come up with, making Kero Blaster to be more than what it seems. I can recommend Kero Blaster to gamers who enjoy shooter platformers and the simplicity of 8-bit graphics.

I had a blast with this. I liked how they balanced the difficulty by letting you keep your coins after each death. That way you can keep upgrading your weapons and health, making it easier with each attempt.
