This game assaulted me, and I really liked it.

Assault Spy is a hyper-kinetic action game that knows exactly what it wants to be, prioritizing high-octane brawling above all else. Right off the bat, you'll notice the game's visual style leans heavily into minimalism. Rather than feeling cheap or unfinished, this stripped-down aesthetic actually works entirely in the game's favor. It keeps the screen readable when the chaos dials up to eleven, ensuring your eyes are always focused on the relentless action and enemy tells rather than getting lost in unnecessary background clutter.
And you're going to need that visual clarity, because the gameplay absolutely slaps. The combat system provides a fantastic variety of combos and unlockable moves for each of the playable characters. What makes it so impressive is how well the developers balanced character variety with mechanical consistency. The two protagonists feel completely unique in their playstyles, yet the core gameplay fundamentals remain largely the same between them, making it easy to transition from one to the other without having to relearn the entire game from scratch.
When you really get into the rhythm of a fight, the game makes you feel like an absolute badass. There is nothing quite as satisfying as playing as Amelia, anticipating a boss's strike, and hitting a block at the exact right millisecond. Pulling off that perfect guard to open up a window for a massive, free counter-attack is an incredibly addictive loop that never really gets old. It rewards aggressive, precise play and makes every victory feel earned.
As for the narrative tying all these corporate brawls together, it's mostly just fun nonsense. The corporate-espionage-meets-anime setup has its charm and is probably worth reading if you're invested in the quirky cast of characters. However, I have to admit that by the time I hit Amelia's story route, I honestly just started skipping through the cutscenes. When the combat is this good, it's hard not to just want to get right back to juggling enemies rather than reading text boxes.
The only major blemish on an otherwise stellar experience is the optimization. Performance issues definitely abound, especially in the later, more frantic stages of the game where the framerate really struggles to keep up with the on-screen carnage. Hilariously, though, this unintentional slowdown occasionally acts as a sort of pseudo bullet-time. I'd be lying if I said those frame drops didn't actively help me react to and beat a few of the tougher late-game bosses. It's undeniably a bit janky toward the end, but those technical hiccups aren't nearly enough to stop Assault Spy from being a phenomenally fun, stylish action romp.
