Beat. I liked the Jrpg style towns and overworld even though this aspect of the game was very simple. They really could have fleshed out the game more, especially with the use key item mechanic, for puzzles and side content. The platforming stages were ok for the most part. The biggest annoyance was the view being too zoomed in so that a lot of jumps and flights were blind, and it made me feel a bit claustrophobic. The platforming tools were cool; the limited hover which became infinite by the end (but no vertical flight sadly), creating temporary platforms in the air, and temporary safe perches on vertical spikes. I did get stuck briefly late game because I forgot about the mid air platform spell and instead just used invincibility frames to leap off spikes. The bosses were ok too except for the mirror image boss and twins, where I had to slow the speed and save state scum. They just moved too fast to react to. Final boss was easy with infinite flight as all I did was hover back and forth.

Definitely one of the better NES games but too short and limited to reach the top.

Paholaisen paluu

  • Graafisesti huipputasoa ja mukavan pirullista menoa
  • Lentely ja pelaaminen kontrolleineen hyvin toteuttu
  • Ei ylivaikea ja varsin kompakti peli
  • Kartalla seikkailusta olisi voitu ottaa enemmän irti, eteneminen on suoraviivaista "mees seuraavaan linnaan"-menoa. Elämien grindaus on aika lailla ainoa elementti, mitä kartalla on tarjota.

The art is a lot of fun, and high quality for NES. I loved Firebrand's movement patterns and abilities. If the RPG elements were deeper, I think it would have been truly special game.

The graphics didn't change much from how they looked in the Gameboy version, only that you can now see from the beginning that the main character is red.

Gameplay:

Just like the first in the series, it's a mix between adventure/rpg with a top down perspective and sidescrolling platformer segments. This time they didn't do random battles, which is a good decision, and there are a few more levels to go through. The story is basically the same thing as the first game, you even restart without any of the powers you earned during the first game. However, this doesn't make the game less interesting.

Difficulty:

Throughout the most part the difficulty is average, comparable to the first game, but in some of the latter parts there are some annoying elements where you have to find the right path through trial and error, and there is no way of telling if you are right before you decide to go one path, that's a bit annoying.

Conclusion:

I can't decide which one I like more, this or the first. They are both equally well made I think, this is a bit longer and has some optional areas which is a plus. But also some of the levels seem less balanced. Both are awesome games in the end.
