Another one

It's another one of these, no suprises here really. It's fun to ride around the world and talk to people to get quests, you could tell they started cooking for the more story based entries in the seires here which is preferable over the repeative chale

Freedom Comes at a Cost

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 takes a big step forward with its larger maps and the shift to free skating. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 takes a big step forward with its larger maps and the shift to free skating. Having no strict two-minute timer gives you much more freedom to learn naturally as you explore, instead of dedicating time exclusively to practice runs. The goals themselves do a better job of teaching you the mechanics, too. They feel more varied and make great use of each level’s design, encouraging you to truly dominate the systems rather than just survive them.

One aspect of THPS games that I think is underrated is the skate videos. This game does an impressively better job with them compared to THPS3. I was always looking forward to unlocking the next one. After grinding through some incredibly hardcore Pro challenges, those videos felt well-earned. They were all really cool, and I loved hearing the skaters’ commentary. As someone who doesn’t skate and didn’t grow up in the U.S., I also appreciated how the Pro challenges taught me about the legends of the sport.

The soundtrack is amazing — easily one of the best parts of the game. A mix of hip-hop and metal classics alongside some lesser-known tracks creates an energetic and memorable rotation that perfectly fits the vibe.

Now, the part I hate: the difficulty. There’s an unfair spike compared to THPS3. Some of the gaps required for 100% completion are locked behind Pro goals that you can’t replay after finishing them, which feels like a terrible design decision.

Ultimately, this is a great and very enjoyable experience. But for me, the difficulty holds it back from surpassing THPS3. I just want to finish the game on one controller, man — is that too much to ask?

I'm so sad the remaster got canceled, it would be great to rediscover the magic all over again.

As much as I loved Tony Hawk 3 and how groundbreaking it was for me at the time, the moment I laid my hands on THPS4, I knew it has made the impossible - it was better than its predecessor in every possible way. Bigger, faster, more challenging. A new career mode with free roaming around levels, new skater specific pro challenges, freestyle tricks, vert transfer. The new tricks made combos longer and executing them more fun as there are less game mechanic obstacles in your way. The soundtrack is fantastic. I don't know what else to say as for me it's just a perfect game. And I spent so much time playing it and got so good at it, I bet I could beat anyone.

Replaying THPS4 brought back memories of how much I loved this game and watching skate videos. This time I have finished the career mode as the god himself, Rodney Mullen. Nostalgia hit hard, so I've rewatched a few videos of him doing his thing. In case you were into skateboarding once and have somehow missed it, here's a 2016 beautifully shot and edited video of him made for Vogue:

(he's 49 here btw)
