Bubsy 3D is the fourth Bubsy game to date, and the first title in 3D; the game was released in 1996 for the PlayStation video game console. It is a sequel to the original in terms of the story and takes place on the Woolies' home planet, Rayon. Bubsy 3D has 16 main levels and two boss levels and the main character's goal is to defeat the two queens of Rayon, Poly and Esther. The player can collect rockets, as well as atoms, in order to eventually escape from planet Rayon. The graphics are very simplistic, even for their time, with a dense fog that covers entire levels throughout the game. Bubsy actively speaks throughout the game based on various actions performed by the player. Planned releases for the Sega 32X and Sega Saturn were cancelled. Bubsy 3D was panned by both critics due to its confusing control schemes and camera angles. It was featured on Seanbaby's EGM Crapstravaganza: The 20 Worst Games of All Time list as well as in eighth place on GameTrailers' 2006 Top 10 Best and Worst Games list, where it was described as "a terrible, terrible clone". I saw some footage of Bubsy 3D with analog controls after playing through a majority of the game with tank controls. enter image description here

For some reason, I feel like playing the Bubsy games. I'll start with this one. I also have a goal of playing every 3D platformer with tank controls. I have played Jumping Flash. I have played Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom. I CAN beat this. Getting every rocket too.

It's like that time where you played Gex but with worse graphics, controls, feels, and everything.

Yeah, this rating for troll purposes, since no one really rated this game this high. I played it a little bit and had some fun screwing with the game. it's not a good game, but you can get a good laugh out of it, if you really are in the mood. otherwise, I don't blame you for hating …

Lookit Bubsy goin' to town on those Lucky Charms.

Bubsy 3D is one of those games that people only bring up to remind you that it is uniformly terrible, and to use as the butt of dumb jokes. I have my own: I got this game for Christmas as part of the "well our grandkid likes vidya and we need to find some other crap to fill the stocking, so let's just grab what's in this bargain bin here" (a process that also got me such winners like Criticom). I ended up selling it to a friend a few months later for $3. I overcharged her.

Though that's more of an anecdote than a joke, but I digress.

Now that I've gotten the reminder that Bubsy 3D is Bad out of the way, I'd like to spend the rest of the review apologizing for my dumb joke: I don't actually hate the game, and I've grown to even hold a little fondness for it. I never enjoyed playing the game, and I have no intentions of owning it ever again, but it's just too incompetent and inoffensive to really hate it. It's kind of like how you love your "slow" sibling even though he can't really do anything except sit there and eat cereal and piss himself.

The poor game was in development around the same time as Super Mario 64 but ended up releasing after that game, so right out the bat it looks outdated and it didn't even get the chance to try and rip off 64's playstyle. It's second nature to us now, but back in the early 90s lots of developers were still struggling with the fundamental question of 3D, especially when the target platform uses a controller with a digital pad for movement and the only viable way for the player to control the camera (if you weren't going to just have it fixed all the time and run into the risks inherent with that) was via buttons. The graphics and music at first glance are crude and primitive, even for the time it was released in, but another look and you can easily see it as trying to mimic the goofy, off-kilter charm of a Tex Avery cartoon as much as it was masking technical limitations. And it probably doesn't need to be said that nobody wanted another goddamn Bubsy game, period. Really, the game just didn't stand a chance -- do we really need to kick it down even more?

If there is a lesson to take away from Bubsy 3D's existence, perhaps it is that good games are very frequently accidents, and it's very possible that what keeps your game from being another middling and easily-forgotten also-ran to an eternal whipping boy is when it goes gold.

Some franchises did well when they moved from 2D to 3D. Bubsy was not one of them. It hurts to give a Bubsy game a bad review as the first Bubsy game on Sega Genesis was one of my first non-PC games and to this day is one of my favorite games. But this game was just terrible. All the bright colors and patterns made navigation nearly impossible and was painful to the eyes. On top of that the controls were very difficult.

Deservedly remembered as one of the worst games of all time

As a young PlayStation gamer, I loved platform games: Crash Bandicoot, Jersey Devil—even Croc. The sheer & unanimous opprobrium directed at Bubsy 3D by gaming magazines made me perversely curious to try it out. I bought it, and played the first level for a few minutes. The sheer & unanimous opprobrium directed at Bubsy 3D by gaming magazines made me perversely curious to try it out. I bought it, and played the first level for a few minutes. Even from that short session, I vividly recall the strikingly ugly graphics, the excruciating pace of the avatar, and the abominable collision detection. Memorable for all the wrong reasons. (I traded it in swiftly.)

This game is as close as I'll ever get to doing acid & eating shrooms... The sad thing is that I don't think being high on either'd make playing this epileptic seizure inducing roller coaster ride any more enjoyable.
