Fantastic Multiplayer Game With Decent Singleplayer Content
By far the greatest strength of this game is how easy it is to pick up and play, especially for newcomers. It makes jumping into a match with a group of friends extremely easy. The learning curve for more advanced techniques isn't very difficult either, so games can become competitive very quickly.

The large cast of characters with each having their own special moves and skills (speed, power, etc.) brings a lot of variety to the gameplay, and that keeps the game from being boring.
Aside from exhibition games, there's also minigames and solo tourneys. The minigames are a nice little mode, but their addition wouldn't have changed the quality of the game for me. The single player tournament mode is probably the best way to improve as a player, as the difficulty ramps up at a steady rate as you advance. It's not as fun as playing with friends, but it's inclusion helps if you have no one else to play with.
Overall a really fun game that's great for just picking up and playing whenever you have friends over. It's not a masterpiece of a video game, but it doesn't have to be. It's just good fun, and I think every GameCube owner should at least consider getting this game if they plan on playing multiplayer frequently.
