They tried to do something new in making a modern co-op beat-em-up game with RPG upgrade systems and a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving in the style of Fez. The meta-game puzzles that make the game so unique, and lock away a substantial amount of the content, are well-done but feel ill-suited to a co-op game where people might play with different friends to finish the game over the course of several weeks or months as schedules permit. Between sessions we would always forget all of our theories for the puzzles and it constantly felt like we were re-learning the same things. To top it off, the slow-paced puzzle stuff felt really at-odds with the fast paced beat-em-up combat, and finding people to play with that wanted to experience both the slow-burn puzzles and twitch-fast combat felt like a very narrow venn diagram. I’m glad they made this very unique, fun, and co-op focused game with great writing, a great sense of humor, and where all the characters feel unique and fun to play, but I left the game wondering who they made it for.
