Possessing unstoppable power, the Dark Forces threaten to plunge the Universe into total war and complete annihilation. Their invasion force smashes the Gradius defenses, and the surrounding planets soon fall like dominoes. Now Bacterian's evil grasp reaches for the heart of the resistance...planet Gradius itself... To counter the oncoming threat the United Gradius World Forces gather all their fighter craft. Half of them form a defensive net - the other half a strike team. Beat on normal. Not knowing anything about the game and based solely on the icons and names in the equipment select screen I chose:

Force field for my shield (which I liked).

Super force field for my super (again I liked being able to survive hits)

Straight vertical shot (no messing around with angles)

Straight vertical bombs with a small area effect (which allowed some cheese damage vs some bosses)

Options that went out behind me. I had no idea what this would do but felt my build was lacking in the rear department. Turned out well.

The charge up laser. I did not like this one at all, but since I lost my vertical gun when getting the laser, I did the entire game without the laser. The whole concept of holding shoot charging it up does not mesh well with the shoot constantly mentality of this game.
