Not terrible. The ability to swap between 2D and 3D, as well as soundtrack, on the fly is nifty. Although I was never a side-scrolling space shooter fanatic, I did enjoy my time spent with NES, SNES and arcade shooters back when (especially the Gradius series). Maybe this is worth grabbing on sale at some point.

I am a fan of R-Type. I first played it on the Master System and was in awe at the time. It was a 4MB cartridge. Few games had this amount of memory at the time on the SMS. It meant nice and detailed graphics. And it delivered. At the time... I grinded through it and managed to reach the end. No small feat at the time. One of my biggest gaming achievements ;)

Fast forward to today, I saw this sale on Playstation Network an decided to get it, if only for nostalgia. Plus it has R-Type II, which I never played.

I was so underwhelmed by it...

Trying to find why. Certainly the port of the game was different from the one I played and I think this was a major factor. Then, I was expecting more of the new 3D mode but it was so meh. When you see yourself going to the old original mode, not for the nostalgia factor but because it is actually better, there is something wrong with it.

Then there was this infinite mode, which was a way to soften the game for the new times. It basically gives you infinite lives and the game does not stop. You die, a new ship appears, you carry on. So, if you do nothing at all, you finish the game (especially because the bosses have a timeout..). So I used it. Died A LOT. Finished the game. I do not have the will anymore to restart it in normal mode. So that was it. 15 minutes playing R-Type, then more 15 minutes playing R-Type II and it is over.

Then I guess there is the memory factor. The memories of my childhood paint the game on a much better picture than the reality. In my mind, the boss fight of the third stage (the ship) was epic and unparalleled. Now, it is so so. Also, I think my quality bar was lower at the time because, well, that was the best I had access back then and things evolved so much. Mind you, I still like a lot the shmup genre and R-Type is a staple of it (just google shmup and you will see a photo of R-Type among the first results), but if I compare against newer games, it aged poorly.

To be honest, I do think I can put much of my blame on the port. The old SMS game was much slower and to me was better paced, be it due to hardware limitations or by design. Also, in my mind, the music was better...well, I guess my mind is playing tricks on me again..
