I donno man, I donno. I feel like games like this only work when they induce a flow state, and this is just not that. It feels like I'm fighting the controls with every button press, the sudden snaps to ledges, the floaty way the protagonist moves, the invisible walls on ledges.

I was really looking forward to Jusant hoping it would give me the same high games like Sable gave me, low stakes free roam exploration but with a twist, this feels more linear than all that, maybe linear isn't the right word, I donno. Damn shame, if this had worked for me it would have been a perfect podcast game. Ah well.

Hope I'm not offending any developers, but it gives off that vibe a lot of times.

There's a lot of lore told through letters and sometimes they are way too long, and could easily have been shortened. I realise you don't have to read them, but as a writer myself, brevity is always your friend. I went for the platinum and it took 5-6 hours, and I can definitely say I enjoyed my climb.

Jusant (Xbox SS)

It's a really beautiful game, with a really relaxing vibe. I loved every second in this. The art style, sound design, mechanic, story...it's just perfection for a weekend's afternoon.

Love it and recommended!

Played for about 2.5 hours and enjoyed aspects but I don’t feel the gameplay kept me coming back. The world and story felt interesting however.

Being DontNod makes me think I might give it another go some day.

I'm not sure I'm liking it. The core mechanic is fine but the invisible walls really break the immersion. My character can climb on an overhang but then they can't just jump over a 10 cm step because the devs don't want me to go there.

Jusant is a relaxing, stress-free time. Even when failing a particularly complicated climbing segment, it will give off this hopeful atmosphere that encourages you to just keep going a little bit further. This game would be so fun to learn to speedrun on a replay. But also a really fun game to just take your time with and take in all the scenery.

It finally happened. A game that looks like the not-demanding type, just kicked my aging pc's ass. There is no way I can upgrade, so I guess it's time to finally try that Xcloud thing I heard so much about.

It’s easy to get captivated by Jusant. It boasts a beautiful art style, an awesomely clean UI, awe-inspiring vistas, a contemplative atmosphere and an impressively soothing soundtrack. The premise is very simple: this is a platforming game where you climb, climb, and keep climbing, all the while absorbing letters and environmental storytelling to uncover the story imbued in this fantasy world. The game makes use of some pretty cool, somewhat intuitive mechanics where each trigger serves as a ‘hand’, meaning they take turns in propelling you upwards as you climb. It doesn’t always work flawlessly, but I do really like this concept and it would be interesting to see more devs implementing similar approaches. Even though you are essentially doing slightly different variations of the same gameplay loop, most of Jusant’s 6 levels are quite visually distinct, each with its own spin on vibe and mechanics they introduce, and the game is short enough that you never feel it outstaying its welcome. The ending is cute and heart-warming, a fitting wrap up for this audiovisually rich experience. And Ballast is such an endearing journey companion that it alone makes the trip worthwhile.

I have some minor gripes - level design feels a bit misleading at times in terms of what is worth and not worth exploring, I don’t like that it sometimes moves you along without allowing you to retrace your steps when you miss something, the game isn’t great at telegraphing, and my playthrough was slightly buggier than I wouldn’ve liked in terms of movement and FPS. But Jusant is still a great package on the whole, and its ability to stun and inspire is enough to recommend it, even if you, like me, might initially feel this isn’t your thing. 7.5/10

4.5/5 Jusant is a third person climbing adventure game made by Don't Nod, the team behind the Life is Strange games. Where in Life is Strange you are playing through the story in the current, constantly interacting with NPCs, and trying to change what happens in that timeline, in Jusant you only have a cute tiny companion on your shoulder who makes noises similar to a pet and read journal entries and notes of characters who have long moved on from the world you are living in. You are a silent protagonist who is determined to climb a giant tower in the hopes of it bringing about water to this world that has seemingly dried up. You have a few tools at your disposal that help you achieve climbing ever higher, and there's a nice progression of making the climbing more challenging as you progress. There are a total of 6 "chapters" in the game, with each chapter taking you to a different biome or area, mixing up the gameplay in both environmental aesthetic, as well as your approach to climbing. If you just chug through the game without exploring, you will still get enjoyment out of the game, but the story is told through diary entries, news articles, notes to other characters to really build out the world. There are quite a few of these collectibles to be found, and without any guides on a first pass I was able to find ~80% of them. My only issue being sometimes I accidentally progressed the story by taking a path I did not realize was the main story path. I would have appreciated a slightly more obvious distinction for where you went to progress versus trying to find collectibles and side content. It's a pretty short game, I believe I finished in around 6 hours, so it's $25 price point at launch feels a little steep. The game is on Xbox Game Pass (where I played it), and absolutely worth it when it inevitably goes on sale.

Played maybe 30 min. It's fine - didn't see or do much besides climb and look at a couple of objects. It's not a style of gameplay that I typically find appealing, but I could see myself revisiting it for a bit as a way to relax after a difficult day.

Well, semi-realistic climbing game is gaining traction as a genre. This, that first person frog one, and others. This one looks interesting although it didn't blow me away or anything. The demo hints at some complexity in the world and mechanics.

Chargeable leaps offer an exciting, risky alternative to normal climbing, and the ability to place your own pitons wherever for rappelling and wallrunning is pretty nifty. Demo area is pretty linear, but it seems like there's enough depth here to allow for expressive movement and some non-obvious exploration off the beaten path.

Jusant is quite pretty, and has some decently complex climbing mechanics. I don’t know how many challenging climbing games exist out there, so maybe this is a burgeoning sub-genre. I’d definitely play more.

I did need to load it up in Proton Experimental because the demo wouldn’t seem to launch in the latest stable release. As a result there was a bit of wonkiness but nothing too bad.
