God, this game's first two hours must be, at most, 20% gameplay. Incredibly long cutscenes with overlong exposition dumps with redundant information kill any desire to play it. Kojima would never use 1 word if 10 would suffice and probably misread "show, don't tell" as "show and tell and then tell again".

I was sure I won't finish it, but I wanted to see what it was really like. But now, 5 hours in, I'm sitting there completely awestruck and thinking every 10 minutes "Why is this actually so fun?? I don't understand!!".

It's a hiking simulator - I never would have thought that carrying stuff around and trying to keep your balance is a game mechanic that could be so engaging. It's a prime example of how you can make a game this long and set in an open world without any combat (although I think I've gathered there will be some kind of combat later on (EDIT: there totally is combat)). And then there's all this crazy Kojima shit you'll encounter along the way, plus amazing cutscenes. But Jeeesus, this dialogue is pretty embarassing. We need to connect America so we can save to world and stuff lol.

I'm playing on Game Pass right now and I'm thinking about getting the game on Steam, so I can experience the Director's Cut. Is the DC worth it...?

Decided I hadn't had enough of this game yet despite binging my way to the plot's finish line a couple weeks ago, so now I'm seeing if I can nab all the achievements. Overall it's been more of the fun gameplay I've come to love, but man, the process of working on S ranks for the premium timed deliveries just saps all of that away along with my motivation. It feels very counter to the freedom the game delivers so well on to have the target times be impossible to achieve short of spamming ziplines to get from place to place. Wish I could make use of some of the other tools for these but that doesn't really seem viable. Really just a shame.

Oh Death Stranding, my dear most hyped game ever, made by my idol, the great Hideo Kojima (my friends literally called me Armin Kojima, before this came out of course) How fabulously you let me down, like every-single-goddamn-game I've ever been so massively hyped for. Oh Death Stranding, my dear most hyped game ever, made by my idol, the great Hideo Kojima (my friends literally called me Armin Kojima, before this came out of course) How fabulously you let me down, like every-single-goddamn-game I've ever been so massively hyped for. Yet this game is also easily the most memorable game in the 8th generation for me. Sure the writing was full-on cringe, the menus and numbers shown at the end of each quest were baffling and unnecessary, the controls left a lot to be desired but still... walking around those Iceland-inspired American landscapes in peace, with those breathtaking graphics, calm, haunting music, the cutting edge technology used to render Norman Reedus and his glorious ar*se...among other things. I find myself thinking back about Death Stranding. Yet when I actually tried to revisit it and do some side quests, to my surprise, I could not even remember the controls! Now that is true originality, especially for a AAA game, and what the market needs in my opinion, more than anything right now.

I'm so enthralled with this game and I couldn't tell you exactly why. There's just something so deeply calming about the core gameplay that I feel like could sit and play for hours on end. I'm not too far in but delivering packages has never had me so pumped.

Started studying for the Bar Exam this month and figured this was the perfect time to give Death Stranding a try. So far, that hunch has proven correct. I can see why a "delivery simulator" would underwhelm most gamers picking up a AAA title, but it's exactly the kind of soothing break I need after 8 hours of studying. The juxtaposition of such simplistic gameplay with weighty, lore-heavy cutscenes is also great for my purposes, as it makes my time in the game FEEL like it's working towards something important even while the general gameplay loop is pretty simplistic.

I will say the first few hours of this thing are a big ask for those without patience for Kojima's love of repetitive, long-winded cutscenes. I'm probably 10 hours in and have only "played" the game for about...3 hours tops? Hoping there's better balance in the cinematics-to-gameplay ratio from now on.

For all that this game does right, I still feel like I’d have to force myself to keep playing it, so I’m stopping because I have other stuff to do. It feels so bloated in the writing, the systems, the pacing of gameplay in general... Too much tedium and information overload.

You could take the game’s best elements, like its core game design, its excellent atmosphere, and a few neat story motifs, put them into the framework of a 6-8 hour mid-budget indie game (“walking simulator,” if you must), and you’d probably get something I personally would like way more. It feels “overproduced”, and I think the blank check approach to making a huge, marketable AAA product was not the best direction for this game’s idea.

I do love some things about it, so it’s a bummer that in practice I’m just a bit bored by how it’s playing out. That’s what I expected when the game first came out, hence why I’m only playing 2.5 years later, and unfortunately the expectations came true. I’m sure it gets better, but I don’t want to sit through any more for occasional moments of greatness.

Played the first 2 or 3 hours on PS5. More accurately I guess I played for about half an hour and watched a movie.

The overall atmosphere, the look, the vibe, that is all outstanding. There's a back and forth between a sort of calm moodiness, and a dark tension that is pretty captivating. Love the direction of some of the cutscenes. There is definitely a ton of time spent in cutscenes and conversation, some of which definitely feels superfluous, but I'm just rolling with it so far.

Gameplay-wise I think it made a poor initial impression before quickly becoming much better once it opened up a bit and gave me cargo not requiring constant babysitting of my balance with L2 and R2. People who love Elden Ring's open-world traversal would probably also like that here, with all the unevenness and verticality, the need to strategically plan out how to reach somewhere on the map, and little messages and asynchronous help from other players.

I can take a bit of the annoying stuff, but I just hope that it doesn't cross back into that territory too often. In general I am liking my experience so far.

Ok review coming soon but this prolonged endgame, with its interminable and tedious exposition and random annoying boss battles is torture.

Ufff, am I really considering replaying this just to attempt an analysis about it. Btw, I loved this game!

This game takes place in a setting where creatures from the afterlife have made contact with Earth with disastrous results. While certainly post-apocalyptic, the world is entering a phase where it is starting to recover from its losses and get used to the changes.

Enter the player character. You are a courier who is responsible for delivering packages from one city or outpost to the next. The story starts with you being recruited to "deliver" a device to the remaining cities in what used to be the United States in order to bring them online and connect them to each other.

For me, this beginning stage in which I was trying to get my bearings of the world and figure out the story was interesting, new, immersive, and exciting. Unfortunately, it pretty much ended there. The game is a walking simulator. While the details will differ, all missions consist of getting from Point A to Point B. Yes, the scenery is beautiful, and yes, the story is mostly interesting. But that doesn't stop it from getting old.

I couldn't bring myself to complete any side quests because not only did they not offer anything new to the game play, but they took too much time since I had to walk back and forth. (OK, there is a fast-travel mechanic, but you can't bring deliveries with you, so it's functionally useless. There are also vehicles, but so much of the terrain is rugged that they are only useful for a trip to somewhere connected by a road, which usually ends up being somewhere very close by anyway.) While there are other walking simulators out there, they reward you for going slow and taking your time. Red Dead Redemption II is a good example. Your character's moving speed is slow, and the game discourages fast travel. But it makes up for it by having a highly interactive map. You can't get from Point A to Point B without running into enemies, a side quest, something you want to steal, rare game... By comparison, the world of Death Stranding is empty. There are occasionally enemies, sure, but nothing that you can actually interact with or do.

By the end, I barely even wanted to continue the main story because the game is long. Partly a consequence of the complicated story that unfolds, partly a consequence of the fact you have to slowly walk everywhere. As interesting as the story was in the beginning, I lost interest by the end. At times it was too confusing; at other times it just stopped bringing anything new to the table.

I did finish the game, so as negative as my review has been I couldn't say I completely hated it. But I didn't love it either. Based on the overall reviews, I'm clearly in the minority. But if any of these negatives are dislikes of yours as well, I wouldn't bother to pick up the game.
