This game really blew me away. I didn't know what to expect going into it and I was glad that I had no idea what it was really about. There are many people who don't like the game because it's a "walking simulator" but in hindsight, I think that's one of the things that made this game. Fighting your way through seemingly endless landscapes conveys the loneliness and agony Sam (and all the others) live through on a daily basis: one wrong step and your life may be forfeit. All in all, the story may be confusing and at times contrived but the emotional beats it hits still resonate with me. Add to this a killer soundtrack and Bob's your uncle.

Bumping my rating up to 5; I think this game is a genuine masterpiece and nothing I've played since has even come close to it

Finished Death Stranding today. I'd been picking at it for a year, so it feels good to finally be done with it. The game has some problems, but it's super unique, especially for such a major release. I wish it was a bit shorter, but the story came together into something better than I was expecting, so I'm really glad …

I decided to try a Monster Energy drink because of the not-so-subtle sponsorship in Death Stranding. Well, I didn’t particularly like it, so I decided to make get my money worth out of it xD

Spoilers for Mama's name so not a big deal if you haven't played the game. It's not really important to anything. I'm gonna explain what it means as it's a pun in Norwegian.

Mama's name is "Målingen" which is Norwegian for "the measurements". I find it kinda funny how they pronounce it as if you split them up to "mål ingen" that's closer to their pronunciation and that would be translated to "goal no-one" (edit: Actually, hearing them say it again, it would be closer to "measure no-one" based on how they pronounce it)

Death Stranding finally came out on PC today and holy shit, this is probably the most graphically beautiful game I've seen so far. Especially on a technical level, but also in terms of art style.

The game is also just really fun imo. Yes, I know opinions are very split on that, and tbh, I just don't understand why reviewers are totally playing the game wrong? Like, do they not read the tutorial or learn from their mistakes? Because I really don't have any problems with falling over so far and I'm now 7 hours in ...

The game struggles a bit with its pacing tho. At one point you'll have long stretches of just (really good) cutscenes, and then you'll have very long stretches of no cutscenes at all. I'm now really missing those cutscenes as they are incredibly well done!

First impressions, the game is absolutely fantastic, and it's a joy exploring the world. It has some pacing issues, but the beauty of the world sorta makes up for it. Is it a masterpiece? Not sure yet, we'll have to see how it unfolds.

So the gameplay is just me running through the land to deliver packages. The cutscenes are frequent and longer than I want, and I don't understand shit. Yet, for some reason, I keep continuing to play this....

I started off thinking “wow!, this is unbelievable! Truly amazing!”, but now I’m 8 hours in and I’m starting to panic. The cut scenes and motion capture are incredible, the scenery is utterly amazing, but now I seem stuck in what seems like a never ending deliver A to B mechanic and don’t fall over with a bit of an over complex inventory management mini-game mechanic hidden behind a layers of inventory / HUD. It’s almost starting to feel like one of those never ending fetch / gather quests in World of Warcraft, which had you collecting and delivering stuff all over the place.

Don’t get me wrong, there is real beauty in the game, but I’m not sure if I can take another 60 hours of “Deliver A to B” and manage you inventory so you can build C etc.

Please tell me I’m wrong! Am I missing something?

This game takes place in a setting where creatures from the afterlife have made contact with Earth with disastrous results. While certainly post-apocalyptic, the world is entering a phase where it is starting to recover from its losses and get used to the changes.

Enter the player character. You are a courier who is responsible for delivering packages from one city or outpost to the next. The story starts with you being recruited to "deliver" a device to the remaining cities in what used to be the United States in order to bring them online and connect them to each other.

For me, this beginning stage in which I was trying to get my bearings of the world and figure out the story was interesting, new, immersive, and exciting. Unfortunately, it pretty much ended there. The game is a walking simulator. While the details will differ, all missions consist of getting from Point A to Point B. Yes, the scenery is beautiful, and yes, the story is mostly interesting. But that doesn't stop it from getting old.

I couldn't bring myself to complete any side quests because not only did they not offer anything new to the game play, but they took too much time since I had to walk back and forth. (OK, there is a fast-travel mechanic, but you can't bring deliveries with you, so it's functionally useless. There are also vehicles, but so much of the terrain is rugged that they are only useful for a trip to somewhere connected by a road, which usually ends up being somewhere very close by anyway.) While there are other walking simulators out there, they reward you for going slow and taking your time. Red Dead Redemption II is a good example. Your character's moving speed is slow, and the game discourages fast travel. But it makes up for it by having a highly interactive map. You can't get from Point A to Point B without running into enemies, a side quest, something you want to steal, rare game... By comparison, the world of Death Stranding is empty. There are occasionally enemies, sure, but nothing that you can actually interact with or do.

By the end, I barely even wanted to continue the main story because the game is long. Partly a consequence of the complicated story that unfolds, partly a consequence of the fact you have to slowly walk everywhere. As interesting as the story was in the beginning, I lost interest by the end. At times it was too confusing; at other times it just stopped bringing anything new to the table.

I did finish the game, so as negative as my review has been I couldn't say I completely hated it. But I didn't love it either. Based on the overall reviews, I'm clearly in the minority. But if any of these negatives are dislikes of yours as well, I wouldn't bother to pick up the game.
