This game created a brand-new genre. A genre that I love. If there was nothing else, this would be a 4, but the presence of mods like FTL Multiverse turn something great, into the peak of excellence. It may be a cop-out to rely on mods outside of developer intentions. I really do think that the foundation that was built …

A Perfect Space Rougelike

This is one of the best rougelikes I have ever played. When I first saw gameplay footage I was skeptical, but I picked it up on sale and I am so happy I did. FTL immerses you in its world by making you the captain of a pixelated ship that is on a life or death mission to deliver data about the enemy rebel ships that threaten the galaxy. This game is HARD, but not unfair. Every decision you make matters and I found myself feeling personally attached to my crew members by the end of each run. The satisfaction of just barely winning a dogfight by the skin of you teeth is unmatched. Gameplay: 10/10 Story: N/A

I Should Not Like This Game...and Yet I Love It

Real time strategy rougelike games are not something I generally go for

Real time strategy rougelike games are not something I generally go for

I think I bought this 10 years ago to try a game that was out of my comfort zone and I ended up loving it

You are the Captain of a spacecraft that is facing hostile forces. You are responsible for choosing your ship, recruiting crew members, upgrading your ship, preparing it for the inevitable battles, managing it's resources, repairs and issuing orders to your crew

You will die..very often. To make matters worse, any progress you have made is gone once you lose your ship. You die, you start again. Life is not fair. That might be a make or break issue for some because obviously it can be frustrating to make some good progress, just to see it all vanish within seconds

I think as a science fiction fan, it is always a fantasy to command a starship. What Star Trek fan wouldn't want the chance to command The Enterprise? How about the Battlestar Galactica? Serentity? The Rocinante? That is the appeal for me

The game is very intuitive. With all the things you need to manage, you might think that this would be a game that would be extremely difficult to just pick up and play, however, it's very intuitive. You'll know how to do things very quickly. However, that's not the same as saying you'll be good at the game immediately. You have to put the time in to get good at it and even then...you're going to die...OFTEN. Easy to learn, hard to master

There is no doubt that it can be a cruel, cruel game. It's very punishing. You will either find it addicting, or extremely frustrating

I don't think there is another game I've ever played that I am completely horrible at and yet still love it to death

Live out your Star Trek fan dreams as you see how poorly you would do in the Captain's chair!

PS. The sound track is amazing.

Sadly, our last encounter with the Rebel Fleet went badly.

We lost our chief engineer to a big fire in one of the rear decks. I already informed their family about it, and sent my deepest apologies. To honor our lost friend we will arrange a funeral tomorrow.

Meanwhile, our ship could escape the conflict. But there are a lot of repairs left to do, due to the damage the fire caused. I'm afraid we are not capable to perform most repairs ourselves. Therefore we’re heading to the next outpost with the intention of concluding our repairs.

I hope there the crew can get a well deserved break from our latest troubles.

FTL: F*** the Luck.

The single biggest factor in this game is luck. As every encounter is completely random it removes any real sort of skill or challenge from the game, or a sense of achievement to more accurate. When you do 'finish' it you realize it wasn't because you did anything in particular, but because you happened upon the right encounters. The gameplay …

Like Oregon Trail, one should not expect to win in one try. The game is very difficult to beat, and you are very unlikely to do so without learning the ropes first through a variety of failures. Actually, one of the things I enjoyed about the game was how devastating the setbacks can feel (such as when a beloved skilled crewmember is lost) yet how one can ultimately recover. Indeed, due to the sheer amount of randomly-generated encounters, your best game might be one where you have huge losses but later experience great fortune. On the other hand, the randomness can be very frustrating, as you can fail through no fault of your own if you just have bad luck with encounters.

It could have a stronger narrative, but the mini-narratives of the many random events/encounters are fun to discover, especially as they can change under new/different conditions when you experience them again on a different playthrough.

Mechanically the game play seems very well-designed: engrossing, and addictive like Civilizations in that "just one more turn" way.

That was my life for our first few weeks with our daughter and this game helped me keep my sanity in my sleep-deprived state. This game is addictive, but never feels like it's being cheap. I mean, sometimes your success is contingent on what you can buy in the procedural generated shops, but I never felt like it was unfair. I could play this forever.

Brtual and addicting, FTL is a cute little game that packs a punch. One moment can be spent appreciating the soothing soundtrack and retro graphics while the very next is spent frantically defending the ship from boarders and putting out growing wildfires. Numerous ship types and contrasting playstyles lead to lots of replayability for those who dare take the plunge.

As a roguelike, FTL manages to meet all my requirements for a worthwhile play: it's got better than average visual and musical presentation, gameplay that demands your attention, a gruesome difficulty curve (that you can tone down as needed), a wide selection of extremely varied starting ships, plenty of unlockables and optional challenges, and more than enough story and scripting to keep it from becoming a straight numbers game. On top of that, the real-time, action-heavy combat hides many of the more onerous aspects of roguelikes really well, making FTL an excellent choice if you're looking for a way to introduce friends to the genre without boring them silly. An excellent game overall, even if it is extremely painful at times.

FTL for what it's worth, is perfect. It has in it all of the pieces that it needs. Nothing more and nothing less. One of the first Kickstarter funded video game projects to be released FTL is very well designed and continually fun, and ALWAYS challenging. I have only made it to the end twice, the first time I played and the last time I played. I lost both times. I have made about 10 attempts.

Best Traits:
- Random and sporadic adventure that feels fresh every time.
- Music that compliments the setting and source martial very well. Very chilled out.
- Combat is intense and engaging and has multiple modifiers. It can change depending on your ship, your crew, your weapons, your upgrades and the environmental setting for the battle. And you can be boarded!
- Every time is completely different than the last. No two play-throughs are entirely similar. Except for the dying.
- Independent game design at its best.
- Higher difficulty is necessary to keep the player coming back for more punishment.
- All in game design inherent in Rogulikes is still a fresh concept. Knowing that there are no saves is an awesome feeling.
